'hating the beatles' seems much less prevalent today. do you think hating the beatles will be outmoded in 2017?

mind you, i heard a schubert hater on the bus a month or so ago

600, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 09:31 (eighteen years ago)

I hate the beetles. Six legged carapaced bastards.

Grandpont Genie, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 09:32 (eighteen years ago)

I've always thought that people who feel the need to annouce "I hate the Beatles" are just trying to rebel against the man. Like getting a mohawk just to piss off your parents.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 15:40 (eighteen years ago)

not hating the beatles is the new hating the beatles.

kenan, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 15:41 (eighteen years ago)

i don't hate the beatles but i don't love them too

Zeno, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 15:41 (eighteen years ago)

i like the Beatles. they have good songs.

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 15:41 (eighteen years ago)

ok but for reals: i hate paul mccartney. get paul off the white album and it becomes twice as good.

kenan, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 15:41 (eighteen years ago)

People who hate on them usually turn out to actually like a load of their songs.

chap, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 15:43 (eighteen years ago)

i'm sure what the white album would sound like without any bass.

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 15:45 (eighteen years ago)

i'm not sure too.

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 15:45 (eighteen years ago)

ok but for reals: i hate paul mccartney. get paul off the white album everything and it becomes twice as good.

Fixed.

liking Macca is the new hating Macca:

First, I was always a Paul fan most in the Beatles. Paul McCartney is probably the main reason I actually started listening to pop music at age 12. In those few years between when I began following the music scene and when Kim Turner’s old camp counselor killed John Lennon, I always bristled when the critics would go gaga over John and trash Paul. As I said, I LIKED John’s contributions. I just like Paul’s more. Then John died and it seemed as if criticism was beyond reproach. And this was especially true regarding John’s Beatles work. Remember, JOHN was the REVOLUTIONARY one. Ok, maybe in thought, but musically? “Yer Blues”? “Come Together”? Paul was the one listening to Cage and other 2oth century composers (and also funding underground UK newspapers for that matter.) I always got the feeling John would have been happy regurgitating Chuck Berry licks for the entirety of the Beatles if Paul hadn’t pushed him otherwise. And then the most abrasive punk rock thing the Beatles ever did was a Paul tune, “Helter Skelter.” So Paul, alien that he is, ranks as my fave. Go listen to “For No One” now.

I thought this way for most of my life but in the last few years the White Album Paul tracks have become some of my favorites:

Rocky Racoon
Ob-la-di Ob-la-da
Helter Skelter
and even Honey Pie.

In fact I now think John and Yoko were dicks for doing Wild Honey Pie. (

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 15:49 (eighteen years ago)

paul just sounds so SILLY next to john. Even when john is being silly.

kenan, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 15:50 (eighteen years ago)

kenan, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 15:52 (eighteen years ago)

ya'll are smoking crack.

I don't think I began to appreciate Paul's tracks until I got into 20s-era jazz and that type of music. John's tracks are still great too: Cry Baby Cry, Julia, Bungalow Bill, Happiness is a Warm Gun.

Me to mate at Glasto 2004, as Paul McCartney walks onstage: "If he does 'Jet', I'm fucking leaving."
Paul McCartney: "JET! Oooh-ooh-ooh-ooooh-ooh-ooh-ooooh-ooh-ooh."

Cunt.

peteR, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 15:57 (eighteen years ago)

McCartney wrote You Never Give Me Your Money, which is one of my favourite Beatles tracks and about as far from silly as they ever got, and was at least 50% responsible for the groups overall sound and direction. He could be an obsequious, self-satisfied cunt at times, though, and this tends to over-shadow his considerable acheivments in many people's minds.

chap, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 15:59 (eighteen years ago)

abbey road is paul's finest moment, agreed.

kenan, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 16:03 (eighteen years ago)

Also his moments of artistic triumph tend to be less well-known and obviously revolutionary than John's, wheras his moments of artistic folly are played ad nauseum on the radio and sung in primary schools.

chap, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 16:06 (eighteen years ago)

600 makes a good intuitive connection between beatles and schubert.
i can't understand how anyone who likes music could hate either.

Frogman Henry, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 16:45 (eighteen years ago)

tho let me clarify that, i could certainly understand being put off the beatles by beatles-loving fans/crits, but, you know, you've got to rise above that shit if you want to enjoy teh good things in life.

Frogman Henry, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 16:47 (eighteen years ago)

thanks for figuring it all out for us

kenan, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 16:55 (eighteen years ago)

"I've always thought that people who feel the need to annouce "I hate the Beatles" are just trying to rebel against the man."

see, i've always thought that it was healthy when you are young. denying thy father and all that. searching for your own path and listening to lots of new bad music and hopefully some new good music. you should definitely hate the beatles when you are a teen and embrace whatever is new or of your own generation or whatever isn't the beatles. when you are older you can give up and realize how amazing they were. but kids out there should hate them with a fiery fiery hatred. and their parents. and school. and all that.

scott seward, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 16:57 (eighteen years ago)

> Remember, JOHN was the REVOLUTIONARY one.

paul had a single banned by the bbc iirc - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Give_Ireland_Back_to_the_Irish

and what, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 17:10 (eighteen years ago)

the beatles are more grating to my psyche/ears than any other band or kind of music i've encountered.

SusanD, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 17:12 (eighteen years ago)

threadstarter, how old are you?

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

Was it Glen Matlock who was fired from Sex Pistols for liking The Beatles too much?
