ILE Archives (and searching them)

Is the search fucked? Or am I searching for a thread that's in the Sandbox?

Sometimes my entire life feels like searching for a thread on a board that no longer exists.

Ronan, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 09:07 (eighteen years ago)

I haven't had any problems searching. *shrug* But I've noticed other people complaining.

nathalie, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 09:19 (eighteen years ago)

every time i've searched for something in the past couple of weeks, it hasn't come up...even when i KNOW i'm using words in the thread's title, and when there's no reason for it to have been deindexed. and words which should come up, like bpitch.

and i don't know what's up with images either, i tried posting one earlier but it just came up with the link (have images turned off so was expecting blank space?) - and then matt said i'd posted it three times in a row, wtf? i don't get it.

lex pretend, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 09:22 (eighteen years ago)

same here.

try searching for the NIN Year Zero thread on ILM (I did earlier today), no luck. I had to look at a lot of "recent questions" pages before I found it again... :-(

StanM, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 09:26 (eighteen years ago)

no problem with images here, though.

StanM, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 09:26 (eighteen years ago)

I started the new ATP thread(s) because more than half of the ones I knew existed (and had posted to) were missing from the search.

aldo, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 09:30 (eighteen years ago)

I've had similar problems too, even when I knew the exact thread title.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 09:32 (eighteen years ago)

google search is pretty useless but the direct ilx search option should get you results.

one thing i have been thinking about for ages now is building a separate stand-alone index of threads by category, displaying dozens of thread titles per page for quicker access/organisational assistance.

blueski, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 09:35 (eighteen years ago)

the current ile search uses a google search with the wh3rd domain name and misses out the p3r domain and google seems to prefer the latter for some threads. modify the url in the google page and try again.

also, stet mentions somewhere else that because the old links don't exist anymore a lot of the old google results are expiring and aren't being reindexed. it should start indexing pages from nuilx sooner or later but without links to follow it might take some time ( / be impossible).

or it could be in the sandbox, yes.

koogs, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 09:37 (eighteen years ago)

direct ilx search option

what is this?

...i don't understand what wh3rd and p3rd domains are either

lex pretend, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 09:43 (eighteen years ago)

Just tried substituting p3r and it still doesn't find half the ATP threads I know exist, even one that might have been posted to this year.

aldo, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 09:45 (eighteen years ago)

click on 'Search'

then click on the 'Direct ILX Search' link

i think Keith is making this the default option on the next ILX update

blueski, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 09:45 (eighteen years ago)

^^ that should find threads if you know the title.

600, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 09:46 (eighteen years ago)

My problems have been with the direct ILX search, not Google search. For example, I know that there is a thread titled "I AM OWL MAN", but searching for that title, or only "owl man" gets no results.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 09:47 (eighteen years ago)

that's because ILX never really handled searches for words under four letters long very well.

blueski, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 09:49 (eighteen years ago)

A AM OWL MAN
http://www.ilxor.com/ILX/ThreadSelectedControllerServlet?boardid=40&threadid=6535

(top answer if you put quotes around the search term)

koogs, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 09:50 (eighteen years ago)

(and you type it correctly, oops)

koogs, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 09:50 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, but that was only for keyword search. If you searched for an exact thread title, you still got the result even with shorter words.

(xx-post)

Tuomas, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 09:51 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I know you can find it with Google search, but not on direct search. Also, the direct search is supposed to search for thread titles only, but it still gives you tons of results that don't have those exact words in the title, which is pretty shitty if you're looking for some thread with a common word in the title.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 09:54 (eighteen years ago)

The direct search also searches the question, which explains that.

The database we use doesn't search for terms of three letters, which is why owl man won't get you anything.

Lex: That's what images look like with images off now -- a link to the pic, same as the old code.

stet, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 11:40 (eighteen years ago)

Okay. Could it possible to do search which looks through just the thread titles?

Tuomas, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 11:54 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, by clicking on Direct ILX Search, then typing in the box marked "Search Thread Titles For:"

Madchen, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 12:30 (eighteen years ago)

The old ILE thread title search was handier in many ways, because it searched not for terms in combination, but exact parts of the string. So the 4-letter restriction didn't apply to it and you could search for OWL MAN to your hearts content (so long as you weren't looking for a thread that was actually titled "The man who is an owl" or some such.

Alba, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 13:19 (eighteen years ago)

this is why 'hen fap' never took off

blueski, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 13:24 (eighteen years ago)

amongst other reasons

blueski, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 13:24 (eighteen years ago)

It also made the site fall over.

xx-post.

Keith, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 13:24 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, by clicking on Direct ILX Search, then typing in the box marked "Search Thread Titles For"

But it was just pointed out that this also brings up threads which have the searched words in the question, not only in the title.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 13:26 (eighteen years ago)

Lex: That's what images look like with images off now -- a link to the pic, same as the old code.

oh right! i much prefer it this way but was it announced anywhere? i spent a while this morning typing the img square brackets again and again convinced i was doing something wrong, and getting very confused

lex pretend, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 13:26 (eighteen years ago)

one thing i have been thinking about for ages now is building a separate stand-alone index of threads by category

I am reading this is sarcastic? Is it sarcastis? If I had typed this, it would've been with sarcasm.

nickalicious, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 14:11 (eighteen years ago)

Because, you know, "index of threads by category" isn't exactly something we didn't used to have on ilx.

nickalicious, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 14:11 (eighteen years ago)

Sometimes my entire life feels like searching for a thread on a board that no longer exists.

this is beautifully put, ronan, and i want to congratulate you for it.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Wednesday, 4 April 2007 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

Because, you know, "index of threads by category" isn't exactly something we didn't used to have on ilx.

it would be more like listing all the threads under each category on as few pages as possible, rather than just listing the categories and having to click those to get thru to the thread lists.

blueski, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 14:20 (eighteen years ago)

thanks the schef...
