In five years I hope to be working for the FAO of the UN. However, due to UN requirements, I need to become fluent in a second language. Since I think it would be cool to live in Germany, I decided to learn German.
For the past week I've been using Rosetta Stone for about an hour a day, memorizing verb lists, reading old books on German grammar, and so on. Today a friend politely informed me that German was not one of the 6 UN languages (which are English, Chinese, French, Spanish, Arabic and Russian). For some reason I had always thought it was.
Looks like I should take up Mandarin again...

What sucks is that I was having way more fun with German than I ever have with Mandarin Chinese (I know a little Mandarin from living in Shanghai for a few months in 2006). I think I would have been good at it!

Well, to keep things moving forward on the pathetic moments front, can I just say that since finishing classes I haven't yet made it to 5pm without cracking open a beer?

Why not spanish? It's really easy!

Yeah, there's that too. The thing is, I studied Spanish for a few years in high school, and then again in undergrad, and I never was that great at it. It was always my worst subject. Plus, due to a problem I have with my tongue - another pathetic story - I can't trill my R's. And it's really annoying to not be able to do that. It's like playing music on Fisher Price toy instruments, it just sucks to not be able to sound good.
Whereas with Chinese I've been told that I have a very natural ear for "singing" the tones, because of course it's a tone-based language.

Anything but French
― warmsherry, Thursday, 21 May 2009 20:36 (sixteen years ago)
xp. Yeah, if you can't trill your Rs you're in trouble, I have an uncle who is a native spanish speaker and lives in Madrid and he can't trill his Rs, his sound more like French Rs that are a bit throaty, it's very noticeable and kind of funny.

"Tengo un impedimento del habla"
― nabisco, Thursday, 21 May 2009 20:57 (sixteen years ago)
i think it's kind of silly to let a tiny speech impediment prevent you from learning a language. it's not like you were going to sound like a native speaker anyway, big whoop!

when a page is still loading and you click on what was a link at the time, but just as you click an image loads and you end up clicking an ad instead. you say to yourself, "oh come on"
