The ones that goes on windows. Question: WHY!? Has anyone in history ever known how to open or close them without veering into Abbott and Costello territory? So why do people overestimate their own abilities and keep installing them?

Blinds are rubbish. Get curtains. I also am really annoyed by people who have no net curtains and don't close their curtains at night, and look put out when you look in on them.

I have a blind in my room instead of a curtain, I pull one string to make it go up and another to make it come down, sometimes, if I'm feeling very daring I may just pull it down. Hey, it's hardly rocket science.

Yes, but after you've pulled it up/down the wooden bar at the bottom will clank against the window sill in an annoying fashion, right?

Proper outside wooden shutters like they have in French villages are the way forward, then you can throw them open in a theatrical manner every morning and watch the sunlight come streaming in.

eh? no, it just sits there, at the moment held up by a little plastic jesus who bears the weight very well, it must be the poseable arms he's got, not to mention the super smooth glide action.

I have very dumb home made (by my landlord not me) blinds in my room which keep out NO light when I am trying to sleep at 11:00 on a Saturday morning but let in NO light when I am trying to do my makeup. Plus if I try to put them up they keep falling down so I am in permanent semi-darkness like a goth or something. What's wrong with good old fashioned curtains eh?

Emma, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What indeed?

Tom, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Let me tell you now why curtains are not always right. Some curtains hang right down to the floor, and are annoying. They get jammed between the wall and the things near the wall, sometimes called furniture. Instead of getting shorter curtains to sort this out, a blind is nicer and takes up less room, what with it being flatter. Also, blinds do not flap about as much. They're still stupid and fiddly mind you me. I have an ability to make them fall down. The whooshing noise is nice.

I always manage to break blinds.

Curtains on the other hand are idiot friendly and the only bad experiences I have had with them involve things being knocked off my window sill onto the floor behind my desk.

I have no recollection of how to spell "sill". I don't think I've ever written/typed it before.

Ronan, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You obviously do recall how to spell 'sill', as you have just done so. I am always impressed by those curtains that draw by magic. I know what I mean. Also, that the verb 'draw' is applicable to both opening and closing curtains. Is it apparent that I have just come from class?

alix, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My brother's swanky bachelor pad has remote control curtains but they broke so no more impressing the laydeez for him. Owing to the bizarre layout of my bedroom I don't think curtains would be a viable option but god I hate those blinds which bang against the window and drive me NUTS.

Emma, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a stupid blind that the string falls off every time Intry to use, so I just sit in the dark. Also I have a massive projection screen in front of the window, which slides gracefully up and down and a big shiny metal pole. This is the way forward I feel.

Graham, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

From what I remember of bedsit living couldn't youse Brits just nail your blinds to the sill, as you never open them?

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You could avoid the issue and live in a basement. Then the damp can be your friend.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Perhaps we should just bring back window tax?

j>e>l, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

how builders spell sill: cill

i currently see jel atop a ladder peering into someone's bedroom and making "what's the big problem" hand gestures as they shake their wickle fists at him

mark s, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Um, they're really not so complex are they? Vertical ones at least - pull the chain and they rotate open, closed or any slanted degree in between, or pull the string and they slide off to the side, out of view all together. I foolishly predict that this thread will spawn others such as 'Sills vs. Lintels - Fite!' and 'Pediments - Neo- Classic or Dud?' 'The death of Ionic Columns? (Doric was better anyway)'.... Ok, so not funny. This brain is the result of my mindless work day and it's not pretty.

twenty years pass...

You may think the inexpensive blinds.com branded 1" mini blinds look like a good deal, but after sending two separate orders back because of defective manufacturing I can assure you they are not.

"Twemty years" Has it always said that?

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 3 January 2023 05:28 (two years ago)

Yes

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 3 January 2023 05:36 (two years ago)

weird! I guess the 20-year jump doesn't happen so often?

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 3 January 2023 07:12 (two years ago)

I suppose not that often? I have the Farfisa thread bookmarked (last post twenty-one years ago in December 2001) as a nag to fix some broken circuitry in my Farfisa Compact and revive the thread but that's low priority. Right now, it's replacing these blinds.

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 3 January 2023 09:37 (two years ago)

the plastic loop thing you screw into the wall to hold the draw-string that came with my inexpensive blackout blind broke. I swear I spent nearly an hour trying to discover the correct search term to find a replacement on e-bay.

"Child Safety Blind Clip/Device/Hook for Roller,Vertical,Roman Chain/Cords"

was the seller description when I finally found it, it was like playing Semantle ffs!
