You know, I think it's more consistently funny than Anchorman and Zoolander.

I can't tell Will Ferrell-Ben Stiller-Owen Wilson movies apart anymore

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 5 April 2007 21:58 (eighteen years ago)

The chase sequence near the end, where they have to take a break as they go up the escalator had me making some ridiculous noises.

Alba, Thursday, 5 April 2007 21:58 (eighteen years ago)

And that North Korean footage was just ... so giddily good.

Alba, Thursday, 5 April 2007 22:00 (eighteen years ago)

actually that bit was funny

I can't tell Will Ferrell-Ben Stiller-Owen Wilson movies apart anymore

-- Shakey Mo Collier

ben stiller movies involve bug-eyed pratfalls and heroin, will ferrell movies involve male nudity and cocaine, owen wilson movies involve eastern european warfare and one-liners made incongruous by their settings. usually it's easiest to tell them apart by noting which of the 3 actors appears in the film.

I'm looking forward to it, even though I thought Talladega Nights was fairly rubbish.

Drooone, Thursday, 5 April 2007 23:56 (eighteen years ago)

i loved talladega nights and thought this was rubbish (aside from a few bits here and there)

latebloomer, Friday, 6 April 2007 00:05 (eighteen years ago)

Talladega Nights was fairly rubbish, Sasha Baron Cohen and (especially) the appalling children aside. It too often seemed to be reaching for satire of the American way in a clumsy way that reminded me of bad Simpsons episodes.

Blades Of Glory abandons the satire and just concentrates on being funny as hell. The Talledega Nights plot seemed to not really drive the comedy forward. And motor racing just doesn't afford the same comic possibilities as ice skating. The driving bits in Talladega Nights were boring. It was the Days Of Thunder of the franchise.

Alba, Friday, 6 April 2007 00:13 (eighteen years ago)

ok but this wasn't "funny as hell".

latebloomer, Friday, 6 April 2007 00:21 (eighteen years ago)

talladega was mostly ass.

Nope - but this is the first time I'm copping to that little fact.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:09 (eighteen years ago)

I will never forgive Vince Vaughn for Swingers.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:11 (eighteen years ago)

the dude at my grocery store looks just like vince vaughn in a little green vest and once they overcharged me for a broom and so as per store policy they had to refund me the full price and he looked at me really bitterly and said 'free broom.'

and what, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:11 (eighteen years ago)

at least he was pretty in Swingers.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:11 (eighteen years ago)

i like post-swingers doughy vaughn

okay he doesn't look mean there.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:13 (eighteen years ago)

he looks good in that photo

rps, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:13 (eighteen years ago)

i think he's the least mean of everyone named so far in this thread!!

and what, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:15 (eighteen years ago)

I mean, admittedly I'm just working off personalities I've made up in my head, but I don't think Owen Wilson has a mean bone in his body.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:16 (eighteen years ago)

did you ever see his furious new yorker letter where he seriously calls david denby an anti-semite for saying ben stiller looked simian?

and what, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:17 (eighteen years ago)

i mean it would be pretty funny if he was kidding but he really wasnt

and what, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:18 (eighteen years ago)

he comforted Jen in her time of need

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:18 (eighteen years ago)

I think he was kidding about calling him an anti-Semite? anyway, Denby is mean as shit and I hate him and his tiny personality.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:18 (eighteen years ago)

xposts

horseshoe, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:18 (eighteen years ago)

denby is the worst writer in the world but he was otm about ben stiller

and what, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:22 (eighteen years ago)

you really think he was kidding????

and what, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:22 (eighteen years ago)

it was really sad for me to read denby's dreamgirls review and realize I entirely agreed with him. he is sometimes otm but he is the worst and he has meanness coming to him.

xpost again, has to do with my idea of Owen Wilson, but I just kind of can't imagine him doing anything seriously except maybe his performance in Bottle Rocket?

horseshoe, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:23 (eighteen years ago)

bottle rocket is basically the only good owen wilson performance

and what, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:24 (eighteen years ago)

remember when will ferrell was the least overexposed comedian in zoolander?? so much promise!

and what, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:25 (eighteen years ago)

he's good in other stuff, but Bottle Rocket is the only role of his I can think of that's, like, an actual ROLE and not just some one-dimensional silliness.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:25 (eighteen years ago)

I also assumed he was kidding because it would take some gall as a non-Jew to accuse a Jew of anti-Semitism?

xpost I can never stop loving Will Ferrell.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:25 (eighteen years ago)

'im tired of being hit over the head with jerry stiller - i wish this ferrell guy was in every comedy instead!'

and what, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:26 (eighteen years ago)

denby is jewish??

and what, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:26 (eighteen years ago)

I think so. but maybe I made that up.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:27 (eighteen years ago)

ha i googled david denby jewish and got

milo z, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:49 (eighteen years ago)

i don't dislike any of these actors really. sometimes they're funny sometimes they're not. and despite the fact that he's in every other movie released nowadays i still like will ferrell. even when he's on autopilot, like in blades of glory.

latebloomer, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:50 (eighteen years ago)

yeah the seth rogen thing is like, strive to be funny like him at your own peril cuz youre gonna end up lame

and what, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:50 (eighteen years ago)

i thought wedding crashers was really fucking funny btw

and what, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:50 (eighteen years ago)

i wonder if any of these movies will ever have a black person in them

and what, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:52 (eighteen years ago)

horseshoe, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:53 (eighteen years ago)

i never saw anchorman though, maybe it has, like, a 70s black guy... with an afro! and hes smooth with the ladies!! or something

and what, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:53 (eighteen years ago)

oh, I didn't even know he was West Indian. that doesn't count?

horseshoe, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:54 (eighteen years ago)

I think there was a black guy in the rival anchor crew

milo z, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:54 (eighteen years ago)

no, no black people in Anchorman.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:54 (eighteen years ago)

oh yeah i forgot dude in 40 yr old virgin hes like the funniest non seth rogen dude

and what, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:54 (eighteen years ago)

he is the only dude in that movie besides Paul Rudd attractive enough to pull the women they pull.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:55 (eighteen years ago)

malco, I mean.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:55 (eighteen years ago)

and also paul rudd is fucking hilarious, dude: the tantrum scene in wet hot american summer is fucking genius

river wolf, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:56 (eighteen years ago)

what does it say about me that id rather just hang out with those circuit city dudes than with catherine keener & her annoying kids? she is pretty hot but still

and what, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:56 (eighteen years ago)

you taste like a burger. I don't like you anymore.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:56 (eighteen years ago)

i think the funniest thing with dude in 40 yr old virgin is when dawn of the dead is on the wall of tvs and hes like 'no! NO! bitch get out the room!!! awww!!!'

and what, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:57 (eighteen years ago)

its in every man's DNA: "tackle... drunk... bitches"

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:57 (eighteen years ago)

Romany Malco?

massive xp

kingfish, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 23:03 (eighteen years ago)

You have a rainbow bumpersticker on your car that says "I love it when balls are in my face".

milo z, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 23:04 (eighteen years ago)

thats gay???

and what, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 23:08 (eighteen years ago)

the "you know how I know you're gay" conversation is the crowning achievement of all of these movies put together.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 23:10 (eighteen years ago)

The four films that are really variations on a theme (parodies telling the story of absurdly caricatured characters at the top of their profession, with realism left way, way behind) are Zoolander, Anchorman, Talledega Nights and Blades Of Glory.

The others mentioned seem a different kettle of fish, even if they do share actors. The Wedding Crashers and The 40 Year Old Virgin are much more conventionally told comedy-dramas. I liked The Wedding Crashers but thought T40YOV quite sweet but not very funny, and really, really, clunkily put together in places. I don't think I find Steve Carell very funny, in fact. I didn't get why people liked him in Anchorman.

I haven't seen Dodgeball or Kicking And Screaming.

Alba, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 23:11 (eighteen years ago)

I think "Tits McGhee" and "Mr Burgundy, you have a massive erection" in Anchorman are still my favourite things of all.

Alba, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 23:17 (eighteen years ago)

Go back to your home on whore island

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 23:18 (eighteen years ago)

ban alba

and what, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 23:18 (eighteen years ago)

(and trust me Alba Dodgeball falls in the first category for sure - I'd put Wedding Crashers in there too tho, there's nothing realistic about that movie! wtf)

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 23:19 (eighteen years ago)

It's an accurate representation of my life!

Alba, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 23:23 (eighteen years ago)

(obviously, no comedies are ever very naturalistic, because life's not that funny, but there seems to me to be a clear difference between the licences taken in Wedding Crashers and the out and out cartoonish farce of Zoolander et al.)

Anyway, as I said, the other thing that links the four I mentioned was the way they're kind of biopics of pretend famous people.

I would really like to see Dodgeball. Vince Vaughn is just naturally funny to me.

Alba, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 23:26 (eighteen years ago)

wedding crashers is totally realistic

and what, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 23:27 (eighteen years ago)

On a somewhat related note, Redman is working on How High 2, and talks about his love for Will Ferrell in this week's Onion

kingfish, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 23:31 (eighteen years ago)

no comedies are ever very naturalistic

Thing is, one of the reasons I liked 40 year old virgin so much was that two parts of it _really_ rang true: the scene where they're all on the loading dock and absent-mindedly smashing flourescent lights, and the bit where Steve Carrell threatens to narc on them for stealing CD-rs and they freak.

kingfish, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 23:37 (eighteen years ago)

alba you gotta see 'dodgeball' if you liked 'blades', srsly.

That one guy that quit, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 23:40 (eighteen years ago)

mc hammer from 40 yo virgin is pretty good in his bit role in blades of glory. when will judd apatow step up and make him a star

A B C, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 23:43 (eighteen years ago)

because life's not that funny

i disagree...life often sucks but i wouldn't say it isn't funny

latebloomer, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 23:54 (eighteen years ago)

Life is very funny, but it doesn't present situations and dialogue that deliver the laugh-a-minute pacing of a comedy, is what I mean. At least not for 90 minutes in a row.

Alba, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 00:02 (eighteen years ago)

OK, sometimes I have laughed a lot more with a bunch of friends in the space of 90 minutes than I do in an average comedy, but I guess the point is, if you were to film us, it wouldn't make too many audiences laugh.

Alba, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 00:06 (eighteen years ago)

Romany Malco is k-classic both for 40YOV (esp. him singing "Age of Aquarius" at the end) and his role in Weeds, which I can't believe no one's mentioned.
