Guardian story

Draft of the code

The thing that I don't understand is that surely the only people who will sign up to this are people who would maintain these or similar standards on their own. So whilst the aims are honourable, it just seems incredibly pointless. (First person who says 'as is this thread' wins a cookie.)

dumb I think.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 15:56 (eighteen years ago)

Well it's hardly worth me saying it then. Blasted cookie scoffing kitty.

"specifically designed to create a special group of self-satisfied, smug, condescending dingalings looking down their noses"

kingfish is probably the only person who care(s/d) about this, but remember the "code of ethics" a bunch of conservative bloggers started a year back or so? after a couple months they all proceeded to promptly forget it, ignore its rules, go back to outing anonymous bloggers, posting personal addresses, etc, and then never mentioning it again. great times.

modestmickey, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 16:10 (eighteen years ago)

I don't remember that, actually. Any linkage?

emil.y, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 16:17 (eighteen years ago)

outing them as gey, or outing them from their anonymity, or both, or neither, or something else?

Abbott, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

ZZZZ... Mailing list moderators have been doing this for years.

You own the site people, so get busy deleting what you don't like.

What Elvis said.

I don't believe in speech codes. No.

daria-g, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 18:22 (eighteen years ago)

I don't really read blogs so whatever, but if you look at how dysfunctionally people communicate on Wikipedia it's sort of mind-boggling that anyone would see Jimbo Wales as an authority on this.

31g, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 18:22 (eighteen years ago)

I mean:

Abbott, outing people's anonymity in cases of people who chose to blog about politics anonymously due to the possible detriments to their careers. i only remember one person quitting over it, someone from dailykos. i do kind of remember someone's sexuality being outed, too... but i may just be imagining that. i don't have any links offhand, and really no time to hunt them down, but it shouldn't be hard to find them searching the most popular political blogs.

modestmickey, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 18:30 (eighteen years ago)

If the ten commandments don't work in real life why do these morans think something like this would work on the internet.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 19:50 (eighteen years ago)

that shalt have no other blogs before me

oh, was that armando on dkos? he didn't really quit, he's got a different name now is all..

daria-g, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 20:29 (eighteen years ago)

I reckoned as much Mickey. I have done too much to compromise my anonymity, which will someday fuck over my career of staring at things in jars. Now to change the lithium-ion battery in my neck.

Abbott, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 20:36 (eighteen years ago)

oh, armando's still around? i only just glance at the political blogs now, really dunno a whole lot about what's going on these days. i remember t-bogg was also outed after the "code of ethics," but he stayed around and it didn't seem to affect much.

modestmickey, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 20:40 (eighteen years ago)

Unacceptable is defined as content that is used to... [infringe] copyright

bahahhaa yeah right. Anyway, I think the majority of folks who would need something like this would be the least likely to follow it(e.g. the michelle malken commenters who'll do shit like out a guy and then send him death threats).

Still, can these people learn there's a difference between "blogging" and "commenting on a blog"? Otherwise, you'll get the obfuscation(deliberate or not) of "posting", which is a great way to slam a blogger for a dumbshit comment some anon.troll left: "i saw a post on suchandsuch.com that read..." which has already happened.

That movie had a part that really freaked me out when I first saw it as a young'un; the whole bit with the feral children and the ghost captain walker coming to save them.

Fallout 3 still doesn't come out til next year, dammit. Let's see how many refs Bethesda packs into it.

kingfish, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 21:31 (eighteen years ago)

Apart from the bits about libel this is stupid. It's your damn blog, you can do what you like with it. Maybe arguing with trolls gets you out of bed in the morning, and who's anyone else to judge you for that?
