I need project managing software

Turns out that the stuff at work is beginning to build up and be far more complex than the little excel thing i've put together. Can some of you guys recommend me a bit of project management software? I need something to track what's going on, time amounts spent, what needs to be done next, etc and can be accessed by multiple folks.

Any suggestions? Preferably not M$, but if that's the only option, so be it.

Timesheet at journyx.com is free for under 10 users... it may not solve all your problems but it will help with time.

project is kind of terrible but does all the things you say you need

But is there anything but Project or underdeveloped freeware apps to do this kinda thing?

my pm professor recommended primavera and basecamp. never used 'em, though.

oh yeah basecamp!!

I used backpack for a while, from the same company I think. Really nice Web 2.0 kind of thing.

btw ms project is not good if you need to share the project plan with numerous people. unless they want to buy project, too. there's a site where you can upload a project file and view it on-line if it's under a certain file size, wonder if I can find that again...

okay, here it is. helpful if you work with people who don't have project.

Hmm. Basecamp looks like, whereas Suretrak has bells & whistles that ceo types claim to like, but i tend to find to be unnecessary exercises in formalism(instead of actual useful documentation)

i need something, too, but my work refuses to pay for MS Project. So I have to use my mindtank. :(

i used basecamp at my old job -- it was actually pretty nice, but you have to make sure everyone actually uses it. i was pretty much the only person that got know/understand how it worked and everyone else just sort of ignored it.

Weird, we're about to get BaseCamp. I use Trac tho:

two years pass...

I've got the same question as in the OP, but figured it's worth asking again in case there have been any new developments in the last couple of years. Basecamp still where it's at? What did you go with in the end kingfish?

(ha, hold on - why am I asking ILX for help with actually getting some work done?)

Trac is cool. I used basecamp somewhere for three months and found it almost useless; it's just a page with links to documents, right? whoope fucking do. Maybe I overlooked some important part of it.
