Tuna Salad 8080

Let me just state: I love tuna salad. However, I'm not a big fan of the traditional mayo & celery type tuna salad, and I've been experimenting with some variant recipes --

my standby:
tuna + mayo + s&p + diced apple and/or sliced grapes

for the adventurous and savory:
tuna + greek yogurt + raisins

my recent favorite, faux greek:
tuna + ev olive oil + lemon juice + s&p + feta cheese + fresh mint

today's lunch experiment, faux mex:
tuna + ev olive oil + lime juice + cilantro + s&p + cayenne pepper

so do you guys like tuna salad? with pickles or (ew) relish? share!

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 16:05 (eighteen years ago)

my traditional is with diced hardboiled eggs and pickles.

The cafe nearby here adds cilantro and chipolte. it's great.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 16:08 (eighteen years ago)

the one with the greek yogurt and raisins sounds good, i'll have to attempt that at some point. celery + apples is actually really good.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Wednesday, 11 April 2007 16:08 (eighteen years ago)

this is my lunch today!

usually, when in a rush, i just use mayo, s&p, and basil. the basil takes it to a delightful level of tastiness.

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 16:10 (eighteen years ago)

minced carrot and red onion, maybe other vegetables too

gabbneb, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 16:11 (eighteen years ago)

now I'm wanting tuna. I was about to head to said cafe for some gumbo and salad. would gumbo and tuna sandwich be too much? my fat ass says yes. :(

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 16:11 (eighteen years ago)

generally, tuna is a wonderfood and those new mylar packages are awesome

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 16:11 (eighteen years ago)

my traditional is with diced hardboiled eggs and pickles.

Add some anchovies and garliclightly steamed and buttered green beens, a nice vinaigrette and I'm there.

Ed, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 16:12 (eighteen years ago)

now i'm starting to regret my decision to get a blt instead of tuna salad for lunch.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Wednesday, 11 April 2007 16:12 (eighteen years ago)

teh schef, i had the greek yogurt & raisin one on some toasted rye w/ a nice slab of cheddar, A+

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 16:14 (eighteen years ago)

Mine is tuna + chopped onion + chopped apple + sweet relish + hardboiled egg + mayo + salt & pepper + a little bit of cider vinegar or lemon juice + lots of chopped fresh thyme.

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 16:17 (eighteen years ago)

Get some horseradish up in there STAT

dan m, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 16:18 (eighteen years ago)

never regret a BLT, ally.

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 16:18 (eighteen years ago)

olives!

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 16:19 (eighteen years ago)

realizing i need more spices & choppable veggies in my repertoire

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 16:25 (eighteen years ago)

i do believe i will have tuna salad for lunch today. oh wait, i have tuna salad for lunch every day.

gabbneb, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 16:26 (eighteen years ago)

My gf made a good tuna salad last week that featured curry powder and dried cranberries.

jaymc, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

css beartrap

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Wednesday, 11 April 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

try some walnuts in that (xpost)

gabbneb, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

tuna salad, like pizza, is a expansive food of inclusive temperment, you can put almost anything in there, so it is ok to eat everyday

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 16:28 (eighteen years ago)

aren't actually discouraged from eating it too frequently b/c of mercury? (perhaps this is just women of childbearing age.)

I got the tuna sandwich and salad. . .$9.50! I have to start being discplined enough to eat what I bring. when I'm broke at the end of the month I'll have no one to blame but myself.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 16:54 (eighteen years ago)

what the fuck kind of tuna do they have where you live

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 16:54 (eighteen years ago)

BLT is least filling sandwich ever :(

modestmickey, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 16:56 (eighteen years ago)

that's true; I think you're fine to have a tuna sandwich after a BLT. a BLT is basically salad.

horseshoe, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 16:56 (eighteen years ago)

BLT haters can kiss my ass

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 16:56 (eighteen years ago)

A salad with MAYONNAISE. Bait-rep

Laurel, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 16:57 (eighteen years ago)

I like BLTs; I'm just saying they're not a meal in and of themselves.

horseshoe, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 16:57 (eighteen years ago)

go to hell all of you. have you not heard of a side, like potato salad? or regular salad?

also i usually have to eat two tuna sandwiches to feel full

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 16:58 (eighteen years ago)

Mr. Que I'm not saying it's a knock on BLTs that this is the case! they are delicious! but not the best calorie-delivery-system!

horseshoe, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 16:59 (eighteen years ago)

i know i'm just kidding!

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 17:00 (eighteen years ago)

oh okay sorry

horseshoe, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 17:00 (eighteen years ago)

BLT's can be filling if you make them big enough

http://daffy.as.arizona.edu/gradplays/play2k/blt.jpg

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 17:01 (eighteen years ago)

when I make a BLT it's like BBBBLT

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 17:01 (eighteen years ago)

a BBBBLT is getting there as a calorie-delivery system. I'll have to try that.

horseshoe, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 17:03 (eighteen years ago)

the cafe near me is way too high. but I'm often too lazy to walk further for cheapness.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 17:04 (eighteen years ago)

guys, i don't eat that much to begin with, i want to assure you all that i am fine with one (1) blt.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Wednesday, 11 April 2007 17:05 (eighteen years ago)

that is fair. I pretty much eat 94/7.

horseshoe, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 17:06 (eighteen years ago)

eating is so OTM

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 17:06 (eighteen years ago)

im not hugely a fan of tuna, should i die?

homosexual II, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 17:07 (eighteen years ago)

me neither, actually, but I like tuna melts. now that's a meal.

horseshoe, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

Oh man I'm about to be broke and I forgot all about tuna. But see I have a TUNA STEAK IN MY FREEZER shit I need to stay home long enough to cook something.

Laurel, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

i think i may get a blt as well, if they have any bacon. they usually don't. what i really want is a grilled cheese.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

tuna steaks are awesome, also.

horseshoe, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 17:09 (eighteen years ago)

as is tuna involved in sushi. so I lied. I dig tuna. not tuna salad so much, though.

horseshoe, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 17:09 (eighteen years ago)

i can never love tuna as much as my cats do.

kenan, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 17:11 (eighteen years ago)

tuna is one of the two fishes i can really eat raw, tuna steaks are fucking ace if grilled properly

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

also my lunch of the lime / cilantro / cayenne pepper variant was really tasty in a pita, add hueg side of green beans and I am pleasantly full

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 17:35 (eighteen years ago)

Also very good on tuna salad? Oregano. The behind the counter at my old local deli made me try it one day and it's amazing.

ENBB, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 17:38 (eighteen years ago)

Ooh, oregano. I put marjoram in mine today, as I seem to be out of basil. Not as good, though.

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 17:40 (eighteen years ago)

Parsley is good too.

Whoever said pickles is so, so right.

dan m, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 17:41 (eighteen years ago)

I have a hard time getting past the cat-foodish quality of canned/pouched tuna :(

quincie, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 17:42 (eighteen years ago)

Also: capers

dan m, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 17:42 (eighteen years ago)

num, cat food.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 17:52 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, it's v. necessary to add some lemon or lime juice or spices to cut the fishy flavor

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 17:54 (eighteen years ago)

i had a burger. i thought you should know.

gabbneb, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 17:59 (eighteen years ago)

also, lots of britishes ordering burgers today.

gabbneb, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 17:59 (eighteen years ago)

My tunasalat of recently = pouch tuna + lemon juice + sesame oil + golden raisins + diced celery + chopped walnuts + dangerously generous with the ground pepper. Will probably be how I next prepare it also, because the taste, she was kickass.

nickalicious, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 18:41 (eighteen years ago)

that sounds sooo good

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 18:43 (eighteen years ago)

never regret a BLT

I want this on a bumper sticker.

nickalicious, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 18:43 (eighteen years ago)

I put sesame oil on/in everything anymore, it is the only thing that has managed to break my mayo habit.

nickalicious, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 18:44 (eighteen years ago)

since i've been trying to eat a little better i've slowly developed an aversion to mayo, possibly my mom's mayo-hate genetics kicking in

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 19:01 (eighteen years ago)

Tuna salad is the only thing I can tolerate mayo with.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 19:16 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, i haven't been able to stomach mayo for many years - but only as a jar in my fridge, it seems - as in, if someone else/restaurant puts it on a burger or in a sandwich, i'm fine.

nick otm re: sesame oil!

i am also kind of distrustful of the tuna in a pouch. and i bet if i started using that instead/as well as cans, my cats would adopt yet another pavlovian response - so, what, they'd freak out every time i opened, like, anything?? do not want

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 20:35 (eighteen years ago)

the pouch also reminds me of capri-sun juices, so i think a straw should go in it. and that just leads down an awesome slippery slope of gross.

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 20:37 (eighteen years ago)

as far as I can tell, the only ostensible drawback of the pouch tuna is that the pouches, unlike cans, cannot be recycled. it's actually easier to prepare as there's no draining involved.

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 20:47 (eighteen years ago)

three years pass...

when you eat tuna then drink beer it tastes like metal!

harbl, Tuesday, 8 June 2010 00:59 (fifteen years ago)

When you eat tuna and listen to metal it sounds like beer.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 01:34 (fifteen years ago)

My gf made a good tuna salad last week that featured curry powder and dried cranberries.

― jaymc, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 16:27 (3 years ago)

Tuna salad w/ curry powder is ace btw

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 01:34 (fifteen years ago)

agreed

aix-en-pains (get bent), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 01:38 (fifteen years ago)

there's a chain here called coral tree that makes one of my fav tuna salad preparations: celery, jicama, onions, extra virgin olive oil, white wine vinegar. no mayo, just a little sweet and tangy.

http://www.coraltreecafe.com

aix-en-pains (get bent), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 01:41 (fifteen years ago)

i'm not averse to a little shredded carrot in the mix either.

aix-en-pains (get bent), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 01:42 (fifteen years ago)

i love the tuna salad at my local french bakery: (probably oil packed) tuna, tiny bit o' mayo for lube, halved or quarted kalamatas or gaetas, and a few pieces of steamed/blanched spud. simple, yet kinda transcendent.
i like the jicama/celery/no mayo idea, too

If you can believe your eyes and ears (outdoor_miner), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 01:51 (fifteen years ago)

I need to change up my tuna salad game. I like the idea of Greek yogurt, lemon juice and maybe a little olive oil instead of mayo.

Grisly Addams (WmC), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 03:12 (fifteen years ago)

I cannot get with salads of any stripe that have fruit in them, it just seems weird to me.

This thread just made me go out and obtain much tuna baguette for my lunch. Tuna w/ wasabi mayo, sweet corn, finely diced spanish onion, and a bed of rocket leaves. Ultranom.

property-disrespecting Moroccan handjob (Trayce), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 03:18 (fifteen years ago)

"My family fell in love... with a tuna sandwich!"
