ok, where are some decent places to stay in new york? i'm going around May some time, i went last october and stayed in the white house hotel on bowery, which was ok, apart from the freakoid in the cubicle next to me who kept threatening to kill anyone if they made any noise and was going to climb over the top and 'fuck you up' and kept blabbing on about how he wanted some sleep after 10 years inside.

anyway, i'd rather have a nicer place this time round if possible, so...reccomend!

What's your per-night-budget?

Ally, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jesus Gareth. I believe there's a bench at the 2nd avenue stop on the F line that sounds a little more accomdating.

Samantha, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

budget? shit, i don't know. that place was $28. i don't know, um, $40- 50? i don't really know how much accomodation costs. is that stupidly low?

gareth, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, my help is out the window :)

That's *really* low.

Ally, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Try this site for some suggestions. Search in NYC and list hotels by price to find the cheapest ones the quickest.

oh.

what about $70?

gareth, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

hmmm, this looks ok, maybe...

gareth, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i stayed at a youth hostel on amsterdam and like 70th or something (maybe it was 40th i can't remember) for ~$30 a night. it's 16 people in one room (4 sets of bunks on each side of the room), but if you stay out late and get up early it hardly matters. and it was very clean etc. no freakoids when i was there. i think it was called youth hostel international or something like that. definitely international and definitely on amsterdamn. go to a student travel agency (e.g. council travel in the US or travelcuts in CAN) for info.

OK, I hope all you seasoned travellers/New Yorkers will forgive me, but I can recommend Hotel 31 on (surprisingly!) 31st St in midtown Manhattan. I've only been to NY twice & both times stayed in midtown & the last time was in 1999, but this was clean, helpful staff (the manager gave us a lift to JFK!) & we could see the Empire State building out of our bathroom window (tho' you kind of had to stretch a little). From what I remember it was reasonably priced & if you say you saw their ad in the Time Out guide (UK version) they'll give you 10% off your first night charge - well they did in 1999.

Have a nice trip!

i've always wanted to stay at the Chelsea Star Hotel with its cheap theme hostel rooms... or there's the Chelsea Youth Hostel which ahs a nice location....

I saw your picture Gareth....mad horny businessmen in Manhattan would tear you up....so hit up this place and make a little bling while you're there, stay in a Hyatt or something, get cheese on your whopper

Ramosi, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Don't click that shit if you're at work

Ramosi, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I would stay away from The Chelsea Star if I were you. Even though I stayed in the "Madonna Room", I felt it neessary to spray the mattress down with lysol and the pillow too, then I wrapped the pillow in a plastic bag. I don't have a recommendation for Manhattan, try Queens at least you'll be close to PS1 the coolest museum around IMO

“Very Nasty”
Howard Johnson Express Inn Bronx
1922 Boston Road
New York, NY 10460

Will never stay here again. Prostitutes all over the place. Man at front desk - pervert. Place looked like it needed a clean up badly. Very bad area to have this hotel at. Need much more security at the place. Reviewer:

You call that a pod hotel? This is a pod hotel. . .

(the technology in the rooms there might be a bit more outdated though)

eight years pass...

If I want to spend most of my time in Manhattan would it be dumb to stay in Williamsburg and take the L train in and out every day?

I've been to NYC once before and didn't set foot in Brooklyn, so part of it is just the desire to explore there. Price also a factor.

Hans Holbein (Chinchilla Volapük), Saturday, 6 January 2018 09:20 (eight years ago)

There is tons to do in Williamsburg and it only takes about <10 minutes to get over the river on the train where you can transfer to almost any line to go uptown or downtown. It's nothing.

Yerac, Saturday, 6 January 2018 15:24 (eight years ago)

^^^

also if you're staying near the J/M you go over the w'burg bridge rather than thru the 14th street tunnel; in the right weather the view can be very invigorating and you still have good transit connection options.

Newb Sybok (Doctor Casino), Saturday, 6 January 2018 15:47 (eight years ago)

Trains being what they are, ten minutes is a bit of overreach... but yeah, "it's nothing" is about right
