Naps - it's what's for dinner!

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 18:16 (eighteen years ago)

It's about an hour after I got back from lunch, which is when I usually start getting the yawns and nods pretty seriously. Bring back the siesta, I say!

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 18:17 (eighteen years ago)

Naps are awesome. Sadly, the most frequent time I take naps is just after dropping my daughter off for preschool in the morning. Is that a nap or is that just going back to bed?

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 18:19 (eighteen years ago)

I always feel really scummy and disorientated after napping, I prefer to do my sleeping in one daily block. Preferably quite a large block.

chap, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 18:21 (eighteen years ago)

Wow, good question.

I'm going to say that if you've dressed for the day, it's a nap. If not, you're going back to bed.

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 18:21 (eighteen years ago)

I nap all the time. Life is better with naps. I napped yesterday before dinner and will most likely do so again tonight. This crappy weather makes me sleepy.

ENBB, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 18:47 (eighteen years ago)

xpost Hm, well, I do get dressed to drop her off for school, but the only reason I'm doing that is because I have go to out and I suspect people would be suspicious of me if I wore my pajamas. But I am usually up for an hour and a half before I go back to bed...

As for being disoriented after a nap... I do kind of hate that when it happens, but I prefer it to being tired and cranky. (Okay, crankier.)

Also ENBB is absolutely right about bad weather and naps.

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 18:49 (eighteen years ago)

But good weather is a perfect opportunity for outdoor naps!

omg, me too. just so crappy and worse than I felt before the nap.

sunny successor, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 19:34 (eighteen years ago)

Never in my wildest imaginings would I have thought there would be a naps=dud contingent.

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 19:35 (eighteen years ago)

I haven't taken an outdoor nap for YEARS. I should do that again.

Who's going to watch my back so spiders won't crawl on me, though.

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 19:36 (eighteen years ago)

x-post

a 4 hour nap is gold. anything under that - forget it.

sunny successor, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 19:37 (eighteen years ago)

My husband HATES naps which I honestly just don't understand. In true siesta style, my parents had a work schedule where they would come home every afternoon and sleep for a couple of hours before returning to work. Even though they're retired now, they still do this. I think I probably learned my love from napping from them. My naps are usually in the 1-2 hour range.

ENBB, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 19:41 (eighteen years ago)

Mine are in the 1 - 2hour range, too, usually around 3 PM on a lazy weekend day.

Michael White, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 19:50 (eighteen years ago)

If I fall asleep when i get in from work, I feel like death. I get creases on my face, I drool and my mouth and brain feel like I’ve had 4 Friday nights out in one go.

not--goodwin, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 19:58 (eighteen years ago)

The best time to nap is early afternoon, like maybe 1-3pm? I sometimes take a snooze in my car during my lunch break, and every weekend around 3 or 4pm. LOVE NAPPIN'. You have to be the kind of person who falls asleep easily, though (which I am).

I could totally go for a 30 minuted nap right about now. I am totally sleepy.

homosexual II, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 20:01 (eighteen years ago)

Man, naps are great, but the only time I can catch them is if I'm waiting for someone for too long. Sleeping is a wonderful way to pass the time or procrastinate.

Abbott, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 20:26 (eighteen years ago)

I will nap any time that I can for as long as I can. I mastered this art by having two children. (BTW, no one warned me that as soon as I'd get kid #1 to sleep, kid #2 would wake up... oh, that was a fun era...)

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 20:34 (eighteen years ago)

Hate naps. It's like my stomach goes into overdrive, and when I wake up I am mildly nauseous and feel like I've been hit by a truck generally. Of course, if it's a nap longer than 3h, it doesn't make me feel like that, but that's less of a 'nap' and more of a 'sleep' (and as such, destroys my already-fragile sleep schedule).

A big NAY from me.

Will M., Tuesday, 17 April 2007 20:35 (eighteen years ago)

I love my naps so much that I will sometimes get up early at the weekend (like, 7am) just to get stuff done: dogs walked, clothes washed, shopping done, so that I can have a nice nap in the afternoon. Much better than a lie-in.

But good weather is a perfect opportunity for outdoor naps!

Best of all is an outdoor nap with your dogs. Then they bark if anyone comes along, so you can wake up in time.

accentmonkey, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 21:40 (eighteen years ago)

Much better than a lie-in.

No no no! I am your mirror image in that I have been known to set my alarm early on weekends just so I can have the delicious realisation that I don't have to get up and then go back to sleep for three or four hours.

chap, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 21:43 (eighteen years ago)

im starting to think that sleep is just an acquired skill that i completely suck at

the sir weeze, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 21:44 (eighteen years ago)

I feel the same way about all the stuff that isn't sleep.

chap, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 21:48 (eighteen years ago)

Nap-haterz just have to find the right interval for their sleep schedule, if you sleep too long you're in a different brain stage and can be groggy or etc etc. My recommended doses of disco nap are either about 20 mins or 40 mins, not more than that if I'm going back out.

Laurel, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 21:49 (eighteen years ago)

I really love the proper ("I have four hours until my next class and it's gorgeous in the park") nap, but the involuntary ("The rocking of the train is so pleasant, I think I'll just... HOLY SHIT I'm two hours away from home") nap is the bain of my existence.

en i see kay, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 21:55 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, delicious Friday night nap before clubbing, how I miss you.

You're right, en i see kay. Falling asleep on the train is rubbish.

accentmonkey, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 21:56 (eighteen years ago)

Oooh I hate that womblike rocking train/bus sleep zoneout :/

Trayce, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 22:01 (eighteen years ago)

It's worst in the winter when you're in a window seat (at least for Chicago trains). The heat comes up right under the windows and engulfs you in it's warmth.

en i see kay, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 22:06 (eighteen years ago)

Beach naps. All warm in the sun, with a lulling background of repetitive waves and murmuring people. It's little wonder that crappy relaxation CDs are full of ocean sounds.

Hard like armour, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 23:52 (eighteen years ago)

A quick 15-20 minute nap completely refreshes me. It helps that I can drop off to sleep in one or two minutes.

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 01:14 (eighteen years ago)

It's that time again, and me with nearly three hours to stay awake and apparently productive.

Oilyrags, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 18:42 (eighteen years ago)

man, there is nothing better than a 40 minute nap on a saturday. but since i have problems doing anything in moderation i wind up sleeping a lot longer than that unless there's someone napping with me. and that might be the one thing i miss most about being totally single, the napping. you can do stuff with lady friends and play it off but napping on a saturday is a pretty intimate thing.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 18:50 (eighteen years ago)

I just had a nice 2 hr nap. And now I will feel tired for the remainder of the day.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 19:36 (eighteen years ago)

Right after than post two hours ago I was given a pile of work! Boo, no nap. Yay, not getting fired for sleeping on the job.

Oilyrags, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 20:41 (eighteen years ago)

I just got a new mattress topper for my bed. Oh man, I am looking forward to getting to bed.

accentmonkey, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 20:53 (eighteen years ago)
