I really want to post an "i" in brackets, with no corresponding "/i" also in brackets.

dan m, Friday, 20 April 2007 04:40 (eighteen years ago)

I will ask the mods to moderate the shit out of you.

Jesse, Friday, 20 April 2007 04:42 (eighteen years ago)

Dear mods, please moderate the living shit out of shitball over here. Thx, JCK

Jesse, Friday, 20 April 2007 04:47 (eighteen years ago)

i think nu-ilx does call for nu threads, because this 50-answers shit is a bitch to keep up with, and loading all answers is a bitch anywhere.

so while we fail to convice the mods that the 50-old-50-new system is incredibly stupid, anyone who starts a new thread is doing the right thing.

We should start a new thread every 100 messages just to piss them off.

kenan, Friday, 20 April 2007 04:51 (eighteen years ago)

IMO the only thing that is stupid about the 50/50 thing is that if you are logged in and you click on the "load all messages" link, you don't get taken to the last point you were at the last time you were logged in and viewing the thread.

dan m, Friday, 20 April 2007 04:53 (eighteen years ago)

No, the stupid thing is that it doesn't let us read threads like we used to be able to. For one thing thing the "later" link is still missing, and still a handicap. I used that all the time. And second, 50 is not nearly enough. I can visit a thread I was at two hours ago and not be able to see where I was last at without loading the whole thing.

kenan, Friday, 20 April 2007 04:59 (eighteen years ago)

nu-ilx may work faster, but it works way, way less.

kenan, Friday, 20 April 2007 05:00 (eighteen years ago)

It is handily driving people (people who don't post as much as us posting monsters) off the long threads, because NO ONE can keep up with those, and no indiv user prefs or settings means that even the veterans have to search for their own name to find the last time they posted, and try to catch up. And first they have to load the whole thread. This board was never perfect, but the faster speed and increased server response is, I think, not worth the massive downgrade in usability. The fucking search doesn't even work. WTF, ppl.

kenan, Friday, 20 April 2007 05:08 (eighteen years ago)

Oh wow you have to use your brain again, the horror~!

dan m, Friday, 20 April 2007 05:09 (eighteen years ago)

The search is a big one, too... this is the worst search ever. What is this search function searching for, exactly? I am totally baffled at the results I get.

kenan, Friday, 20 April 2007 05:10 (eighteen years ago)

stfu, dan. you know what i mean, and i am not just speaking for myself here.

kenan, Friday, 20 April 2007 05:11 (eighteen years ago)

Whatevs, dudes. Hi.

Oh, Kevin, whenever you get here, thanks for coming to the show.
Everyone else, no soup for you!

It was kind of odd. There were people there, but they were doing their own thing, which wasn't standing in front of the stage watching. Then these two guys showed up afterwards and were bummed because they paid the cover and we'd already played, so I talked to them for a while.

I need a snack. Beerz.

KitCat, Friday, 20 April 2007 05:12 (eighteen years ago)

No, I'm kind of serious. I don't pay attention to too many threads at any one time, and I remember, or at least try to remember, what and where I posted last in any one of them. If you're not jumping all over the place all the time, it's not too hard. I admit I miss features like the one that allowed you to load all unread messages but I'm making do the way it is. Remember that people are doing this shit for nothing! You get what you pay for.

dan m, Friday, 20 April 2007 05:14 (eighteen years ago)

no, what i mean is, i'm talking about julia, who used to be able to keep up with everything (that she cared to), largely thanks to the "later" button, but now hardly bothers, because loading every thread back to the point where she left off is such a GIANT pain in the ass

kenan, Friday, 20 April 2007 05:17 (eighteen years ago)

it was weird sarah, i felt bad for you guys because i don't think anyone was paying enough attention and you guys were really good. i had to bail to meet other people however.

thanks for the show, i had teh funn!

chicago kevin, Friday, 20 April 2007 05:17 (eighteen years ago)

kenan, Friday, 20 April 2007 05:18 (eighteen years ago)

also, i understand the impulse to say, "fuck people who can't keep up," BELIEVE ME I DO, but that's a very programmer thing to think, and i think it's kind of my job at work if not in life to make sure that that kind of thinking doesn't completely fuck all the people they didn't think about.

kenan, Friday, 20 April 2007 05:21 (eighteen years ago)

I agree, that sucks really hard! Hopefully the powers that be will work it out. If I had the skills I would volunteer to help. I think we all got a little spoiled by the old format, and the customization that was possible with it. None of the other (OK, one) boards I follow on the internet had anything near the functionality of ol-ILX, but they weren't as vulnerable either.

xpost I'm not saying fuck you if you can't keep up, just describing how I manage to keep up.

dan m, Friday, 20 April 2007 05:23 (eighteen years ago)

and that's really funny as hell for me to say, because i'm the biggest prick in the world about computer shit, but the more i deal with poor websites, the more i understand what accessibility is worth, and it's a lot.

kenan, Friday, 20 April 2007 05:26 (eighteen years ago)

and this, right now, is poor. ILX is worse than it was, security be damned. I'd much rather it be slow and hackable than this much less usuable.

the only reason i'm still here is because a) I have an addictive personality, b) I have met many of my current friends here, and keep up with them here, and c) I like to talk about sex and have arguments.

The latter I could do on any other board, I know.

chicago kevin, Friday, 20 April 2007 05:37 (eighteen years ago)

Oh stop, next you'll be telling us about how you had to walk both ways uphill to school. It's an independently-driven board with no advertising, which is amazing enough.

dan m, Friday, 20 April 2007 05:37 (eighteen years ago)

ok, then, is it possible for you to not bring up your ex girlfriend and post a pic of you and her every week and bum us all out?

Sorry, Fixx, didn't know about the show until too late. Sounds like the kind of show where someone was listening and you'll have no idea until 6 months from now.

Is the following a reason I should get a Mac?

I want to be able to copy a file that is currently in use. Most often when I want to move an audio file, it is because I am listening to it and I want it to be somewhere where I can use it again, but then I find that it is already in use and then I move on and forget about it.

Jesse, Friday, 20 April 2007 06:21 (eighteen years ago)

no, a file in use cannot be moved for a very good reason.

kenan, Friday, 20 April 2007 06:24 (eighteen years ago)

a mac will let you move a file that you are using, like a Word doc or something, and when you save it, it knows where the file has moved. That's nice sometimes.

kenan, Friday, 20 April 2007 06:25 (eighteen years ago)

Music files can't be played and moved at the same time for some reason, but there's no windows/mac diff on that one.

kenan, Friday, 20 April 2007 06:26 (eighteen years ago)

I think that as a man living in the Future, I should be able to move COPY a file that is in use.

Jesse, Friday, 20 April 2007 06:32 (eighteen years ago)

For Jenny's p*rty we will be having a private screening of Spike Lee's [/i]When the Levees Broke[/i] at Kohnak Pizza. Silence enforced.

Jesse, Friday, 20 April 2007 06:40 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, Eric. It was especially weird because it's not like there was complete silence in between our songs. You know that sound people make when they're trying to be supportive that doesn't sound at all genuine, like a half-assed "Woo." There was a lot of that all at once in between songs. It sounded like the drummer's gf's friends trying to be supportive and the people throwing the benefit who asked us to play...

Kevin, that was another friend's reaction at a BKitchen show a little while ago. He said it was hard to watch us because he really enjoyed our set but was frustrated other people weren't paying attention and that it was weird. I guess we just need to be more selective about what shows we play (though how could we know a show at the Dkrm benefiting a food co-op would be anything but awesome?).

Two guys showed up after we played and were bummed because they paid to see us and missed us. I felt bad and gave one of them a cd, which we have to pay for... So, since it was a benefit and we sold zero cds, we made -$10 (not that that's our goal in playing, but it would have been a nice silver lining to sell a cd or two...).

Ok, enough about me whining.

I'm excited about this weekend. I just need to make it through the damn work day with this beer tummy.

Also, Jesse, I just so happen to like Pizza.

KitCat, Friday, 20 April 2007 11:36 (eighteen years ago)

Albee had some EYELASHES on him! I don't think he's funny looking in that photo at all. He has KindEyesTM.

Also I am insanely bummed that I cannot attend Jenny's party!!!!! I have to be in goddamn NC for a wedding that, quite frankly, I am not altogether thrilled about. Oh well. At least I get to see my college friends and take embarrassing digital photos of them because it's 2007 and not 1997 and we can do that now.

La Lechera, Friday, 20 April 2007 12:21 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I was wondering how so many people have digipix on hand of their college years... Maybe most of those posters are younger? Or maybe they just have scanners handy...

KitCat, Friday, 20 April 2007 12:24 (eighteen years ago)

Also, Jesse, I just so happen to like Pizza.

Do you mean as opposed to "pizz@"?

Jesse, Friday, 20 April 2007 12:43 (eighteen years ago)

This thread bums me out. Let's start a new one without all the pointless meanness at the beginning.

Jenny, Friday, 20 April 2007 13:04 (eighteen years ago)

Although I guess with a thread named after and featuring a picture of pointless meanness, it was kind of inevitable.

Jenny, Friday, 20 April 2007 13:05 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, rilly. but that kind of meanness is a bummer. i suggest abandoning ship.

Day of Bummers

La Lechera, Friday, 20 April 2007 13:07 (eighteen years ago)

Srsly.

Everyone was grumpy on the bus this morning - shoving, cussing each other out... Then when I was walking from the stop to my work, the owner of my company picked me up. I open the door to his fancy, shiny car. He's wearing a very posh suit. Anyway, he's listening to hip hop really loud over his satellite radio! I was impressed. It just felt like what he should be listening to in that situation.

KitCat, Friday, 20 April 2007 13:17 (eighteen years ago)

Jesse, Friday, 20 April 2007 13:30 (eighteen years ago)

The irony of the show last night is that after talking about sound guys yesterday we ended up with kind of a douchey sound guy. He seemed cool at first but then when we were soundchecking he had all these problems getting the vocals loud enough on stage, particularly Sarah's, which is odd because D@rkroom has a pretty powerful sound system. He kept fiddling with things and working on it, to his credit, but then he eventually just said he couldn't make her vocals any louder. Then he said she sang too quiet and "might want to consider some lessons on singing from your diaphragm before the next show." Finally, he decided to solve the problem by having Sarah's vocals blast out through my monitors as well, which made me keep slipping off key all night (more than usual). Considering we've been playing shows for three years in this band, and Sarah has been in bands for 10+ years at this point, and we've NEVER had this problem before where a sound guy just couldn't make her vocals audible, I'm guessing dude a) didn't know how to use the club's equipment, b) didn't know how to deal with the frequencies of a female voice, or c) both.

n/a, Friday, 20 April 2007 13:31 (eighteen years ago)

wtf kind of thing is that to say?

Jesse, Friday, 20 April 2007 13:32 (eighteen years ago)

n/a, Friday, 20 April 2007 13:37 (eighteen years ago)

get out of this thread, asshole

Jesse, Friday, 20 April 2007 13:39 (eighteen years ago)

I hate that sound guy with a pasión.

KitCat, Friday, 20 April 2007 14:10 (eighteen years ago)

Last weekend at Ho Bisco the sound was great but the bar was noisy and it just wasn't the right place for me to play, but some folks were listening through the wall of talking (and for me it was a show I would've gone to anyway, so was glad to play). But afterwards the set and went for a walk and realized that it felt OK but it would not feel good spending the time and expense to go to somewhere like Columbus and play a show like that.

And at the same time, that's part of what touring would be, unless I tried to play only in Ice Fac/South Union/listening room places. And same for you guys -- if you toured, I'm guessing a few shows would be like last night's, in the sound and/or the money dept.

Benefits, especially, don't seem to draw listeners automatically. Whoever organized it wants music, but whoever's attending might just want to drink and talk and donate their money, but not necessarily want to actively experience a live music show.

Eazy, Friday, 20 April 2007 14:17 (eighteen years ago)

I want to note that I don't really think it was such an awful show. It was definitely weird, but I recognized the aspects that Eric is talking about and realized that people weren't ignoring us because they thought we were bad but because they just weren't there to listen to music. I thought we played pretty well and kept up a good amount of energy despite lack of crowd feedback. We have played plenty of worse shows.

n/a, Friday, 20 April 2007 14:20 (eighteen years ago)

I'm guessing dude a) didn't know how to use the club's equipment, b) didn't know how to deal with the frequencies of a female voice, or c) both.

Yeah, no shit. For the record, EL has like the quietest voice I've ever heard. It's really kind of hilarious when we sound-check mics, and me and Matt and Colin are all heartily singing like we're in a fucking Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, and she comes in like a tentative newborn lamb. Matt usually says, "Yeah, she sings pretty quiet," to which most sound guys will say, "OK, we'll just turn her way up then."
