The actor who was in 'Is Paris Burning?', 'The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie', 'Murder on the Orient Express', 'The Three Musketeers', 'Army of Shadows', 'Vincent and Theo', 'Prêt-à-porter', 'La Cérémonie' and many other films, the father of Vincent and Cécile Cassel, died on Thursday after what his agent called 'a long illness.' I had forgotten he was in Army of Shadows and now it is all coming flooding back.

RIP (also, RIP to the inspiration for Simone Signoret's character in Army of Shadows who also died recently.)

Aubrac?

Michael White, Friday, 20 April 2007 16:08 (eighteen years ago)

Aw, shame. Just watched 'the Discreet Charm...' a couple of weeks ago and was debating whether he was Vincent's dad. Didn't think I'd get my answer this way.

He is, right?

I saw 'La Cérémonie' a few months ago and 'Murder on the Orient Express' when it was first released.

what's Vincent Cassel been in?

Dr Morbius, Friday, 20 April 2007 20:10 (eighteen years ago)

Wasn't he the guy who was dating Monica Bellucci and is her boyfriend in the Gaspar Noe movie?

James Redd and the Blecchs, Friday, 20 April 2007 20:12 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, that's him.

Jibe, Friday, 20 April 2007 20:14 (eighteen years ago)

It looks like they're married, actually.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Friday, 20 April 2007 20:16 (eighteen years ago)

They are indeed. Vincent Cassel also plays in Ocean's Twelve. And a number of very bad to OK french films. Amongst those, i guess the most famous are La Haine, Irreversible, Dobermann, Sur mes levres, Le pacte des loups, Luc Besson's Jeanne d'Arc (sorry, don't know the english titles)... i can hardly remember any of those films.

Jibe, Friday, 20 April 2007 20:18 (eighteen years ago)

OK, I thought he was in La Haine after a minute. I've blotted out Irreversible.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 20 April 2007 20:22 (eighteen years ago)

Sur mes levres
This was about the deaf girl who gets involved with some kind of tough guy and softens him up or something? I don't think I made it to the end.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Friday, 20 April 2007 20:25 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, that's it. I didn't even make it halfway through, so wont be able to tell you if you missed anything, but i doubt it. It is directed by Jacques Audiard, the son of another great figure of french cinema, Michel Audiard. What is it with sons of great guys doing not-so-great things?

Jibe, Friday, 20 April 2007 20:32 (eighteen years ago)

I liked La Haine way more than Army of Shadows (ducks)

Dr Morbius, Friday, 20 April 2007 20:35 (eighteen years ago)

You mean like Jean Renoir?

xpost

Michael White, Friday, 20 April 2007 20:37 (eighteen years ago)

I liked La Haine, but it wasnt that good or anything. L'armée des ombres was much better, but then again i really loved the book so am not the best person to judge L'armée des ombres' worth.

Jean Renoir's father didn't have anything to do with cinema. And anyways, there's always "l'exception qui confirme la règle" ;)

Jibe, Friday, 20 April 2007 20:40 (eighteen years ago)

Also, i didnt mean for that to be an absolute truth, it just happened that i was talking about two guys whose fathers' work i appreciate a whole lot more.

Jibe, Friday, 20 April 2007 20:49 (eighteen years ago)

what's the beef with 'sur mes levres'? i rated it.

vincent cassel is a dude and so is his dad. pour one out.

That one guy that quit, Friday, 20 April 2007 20:53 (eighteen years ago)

Jibe, tu sais que je plaisantais.

The gf really liked Cassel père but she thought the son kinda hot in 'Ocean's 12'. Tous les goûts sont dans ma nature, paraît-il.

Michael White, Friday, 20 April 2007 22:17 (eighteen years ago)

Oops. I meant 'la'. I guess I was channeling Dutronc, there.
