Yet another regional thread for people to bitch about. (inspired by: http://www.ilxor.com/ILX/ThreadSelectedControllerServlet?boardid=40&threadid=53284#unread

dan m, Friday, 20 April 2007 18:47 (eighteen years ago)

But what to discuss? The weather? Bart Stupak? None of us live there anymore!

dan m, Friday, 20 April 2007 18:47 (eighteen years ago)

Come on, I know there are 3 of you out there.

dan m, Friday, 20 April 2007 18:50 (eighteen years ago)

i got my hair cut today.

b-rad, Friday, 20 April 2007 18:51 (eighteen years ago)

if we keep this up it'll totally turn into a 'random thoughts' thread in a new venue, by the way.

b-rad, Friday, 20 April 2007 18:52 (eighteen years ago)

Ahaha worse things have happened.

dan m, Friday, 20 April 2007 18:53 (eighteen years ago)

I mean, look at Chi/DC/etc threads, that's all they are. Plus here we can make references to RALPH.

dan m, Friday, 20 April 2007 18:53 (eighteen years ago)

shit I should have referenced it in the title

dan m, Friday, 20 April 2007 18:54 (eighteen years ago)

Or we can just image spam pics of Big Gus

dan m, Friday, 20 April 2007 18:55 (eighteen years ago)

good point.

i ate pizza for lunch today. pizza and beers. at aubree's, with bill. i also had a pint of the arbor blonde 'cause the beer of the month is arcadia whitsun and i'm not the biggest fan of it.

relevance: there's an aubree's in marquette now. wonder how yoopers are taking to the gourmet pizza idea...

xpost HUNTER'S BAR! have i ever told you my awesome hunter's bar story? the one about how there used to be a gas station across the street from it but apparently it closed when 'da owner left his wife and left town with his boyfriend, eh?' TOTALLY YOOPER SCANDAL.

b-rad, Friday, 20 April 2007 18:56 (eighteen years ago)

holy wah. i've still never been smelting. bring me beer, brad! and pizza!

sisut, Friday, 20 April 2007 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

I know little of the bar ways of the central Yoop, sadly. Do tell, plz!

dan m, Friday, 20 April 2007 18:58 (eighteen years ago)

Dan, we totally need to go smelting sometime as I've never gone either. We will chew Copie and drink Man Cans and wear waders.

joygoat, Friday, 20 April 2007 19:00 (eighteen years ago)

i've never been smelting, either!

i have leftovers in my trunk... i could bring 'em out to chicago if i didn't already have plans -- jen's buying a camcorder then we're either going to hang out at the ELBOW ROOM (popular ypsilanti music venue mentioned in the 734 thread) or with bangs and brady. besides, i'm sure you could get pizza quicker if you ordered from somewhere local.

b-rad, Friday, 20 April 2007 19:00 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, Brad! I saw a hippie girl at the grocery store wearing a Phil's 550 shirt the other day!

xpost You are disgraceful Yoopers... Never been smelting. BAH. My old man's still got all the nets and everything, the problem is gonna be going up there in the spring time.

dan m, Friday, 20 April 2007 19:01 (eighteen years ago)

Also, I recently had a person say "oh, you're an Upper" to me when I told him where I grew up.

joygoat, Friday, 20 April 2007 19:02 (eighteen years ago)

We should simulate smelting in the city. Urban Yoopers. I smell an obnoxiously overpriced boutique. There has got to be a way to turn empty headed hipsters onto Yooper-chic.

sisut, Friday, 20 April 2007 19:03 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, soon they will all be wearing hip waders.

dan m, Friday, 20 April 2007 19:03 (eighteen years ago)

lol technology

dan m, Friday, 20 April 2007 19:05 (eighteen years ago)

the hunter's bar in ralph was pretty much what you'd expect from a bar smack dab in the middle of the UP -- combination of restaurant, grocery, liquor store, junk collection, bar, and hunting trophy room all combined into one. the people were weirdos -- total UP woods people -- and the food was deep fried and tasty. we'd head over there once or twice a year, as it was maybe half an hour away from our camp.

i totally need to add it to my bar list.

xpost just1n w4rsh4m and i once had a conversation about how we should introduce hip waders as everyday fashion to the metro-detroit music scene.

b-rad, Friday, 20 April 2007 19:06 (eighteen years ago)

that reminds me, dan: does s4m c0l3m4n post on ilx? do you guys ever hang out with him?

b-rad, Friday, 20 April 2007 19:06 (eighteen years ago)

(i guess katie could answer that question, too. or maybe even jeff.)

b-rad, Friday, 20 April 2007 19:07 (eighteen years ago)

I seriously hoped a couple years ago that some rapper would start to wear the neon green and checkerboard snowmobile outfits and start a confusing fad.

joygoat, Friday, 20 April 2007 19:08 (eighteen years ago)

He doesn't post here, all his internet friends are on the 'lectrical Audio board. I see him every once in a while, but he works weird hours compared to me and the rest of the crew, so hanging out can be difficult.

dan m, Friday, 20 April 2007 19:08 (eighteen years ago)

is he still working at that coffee shop and getting paid under the table?

i miss drinking malt liquor and listening to goofy records with sam.

b-rad, Friday, 20 April 2007 19:09 (eighteen years ago)

Which brand would the rappers choose, though? None of these brands scream "street" to me...

Arctic Cat
Ski-Doo
Yamaha
POLARIS

dan m, Friday, 20 April 2007 19:09 (eighteen years ago)

Nah, done with the coffee shop, he works at this pretty sweet bakery: http://www.alliance-bakery.com/

dan m, Friday, 20 April 2007 19:10 (eighteen years ago)

it'd have to be either arctic crapcat or ski-doo, wouldn't it? polaris is too indie rock...

does yamaha even make snowmobile suits?

xp i think i've heard of that bakery before -- possibly in relation to sam getting a job there, though i'm not sure.

b-rad, Friday, 20 April 2007 19:12 (eighteen years ago)

does yamaha even make snowmobile suits?

yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah

dan m, Friday, 20 April 2007 19:15 (eighteen years ago)

oh man -- i just found out that i'm getting free dinner tomorrow! yay!

b-rad, Friday, 20 April 2007 19:22 (eighteen years ago)

Bitchin!

Hey I was talking to paingoat last night and apparently she's coming to the D soon. Thought I might take that as an excuse to make the drive over myself...

dan m, Friday, 20 April 2007 19:23 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, jen's making friends with this band she played with from ferndale. they were pretty neat -- ethereal pop that reminds me of someone that i still can't place. they're called the l00ms, minus the zeros of course.

did she mention why/when she's heading to detroit? conference or something of that nature?

we have a nice air mattress that you could crash on if you want to stay in ypsi, dan. or anyone, for that matter. 906THREAD4LIFE!

b-rad, Friday, 20 April 2007 19:27 (eighteen years ago)

ooh -- i just thought of something i should ask 906THREAD about!

are people going to be in houghton for the forth of july this year? D1LL R0B3RT is getting married the weekend following and we're thinking about heading up for the week to bum around. camp party?

b-rad, Friday, 20 April 2007 19:28 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, conference time, she said.

For a second I thought that band was called "one hundred milliseconds".

I don't know when I'm heading north again. I was kind of thinking the other day that I really have no desire to go there for the first time since moving to Chi. I'll have to at some point this summer, if only because my sis is getting married in August. The 4th might be fun, though, if I can kick my parents out of the camp.

dan m, Friday, 20 April 2007 19:31 (eighteen years ago)

We're heading to Hoton like the 15th for my cousin's wedding. Don't know how long we'll be around yet.

Also, the wife has a conference at Wayne State. I will not be going due to $$$ factors. This will be hilarious as many ultra-urban east coast city folks will be in the D for the first time ever.

joygoat, Friday, 20 April 2007 19:32 (eighteen years ago)

they'll probably be most amused by all of the abandoned buildings.

downtown is looking AMAZING these days, by the way. haven't spent much time there since september, really, so it's really cool to pass through and see the amount of construction that's going on. lots of housing, hotel space, new bars and restaurants, et cetera.

midtown is still kind of sketchy but really not bad near the university. the ultra-urban folks will still be freaked out, i'm sure, but i bet they leave saying things like 'detroit isn't anywhere near as bad as i thought it was going to be!'

b-rad, Friday, 20 April 2007 19:37 (eighteen years ago)

i still think it's funny that i've had more bad things happen to my car since i've moved to ypsi than i did in hamtramck. i can't believe my car got shot up...

b-rad, Friday, 20 April 2007 19:38 (eighteen years ago)

alright, i'm leaving work early 'cause it's friday and nothing is happening. catch you later, internet!

b-rad, Friday, 20 April 2007 19:42 (eighteen years ago)

I need to get some work done so I can do likewise.

dan m, Friday, 20 April 2007 19:47 (eighteen years ago)

I posted this in the Chi thread so people could be amazed at real estate prices, but I think it bears reposting here... My old college house in Ho-town is up for sale!

http://www.uparidx.com/idx/kewee/douglass/residential/propview.php?view=217647

Lotta drinking, lotta SWEDing in that house. And a lot of love, too ;_;

dan m, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 22:49 (eighteen years ago)

DAN I HAVE NEVER BEEN TO THE UP CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?????

river wolf, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 22:51 (eighteen years ago)

Aw, this thread is great.

jaymc, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 23:56 (eighteen years ago)

D00D RW LET'S GO THIS SUMMMER WE CAN KAYAK AND BIKE AND OHHH THE DRINKING

dan m, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 00:19 (eighteen years ago)

Nobody drinks in the UP.

Dan, I though that was going to be to be your house on Reservation, in which I had plenty of SWED and lovin' experiences myself.

Either way, what would that place go for in Chicago? I know this depends heavily on what part of town, but at least 300K, minimum, right? Out here it'd be 200K or so. Seattle, probably over 700K. Fucking Houghton.

joygoat, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 05:47 (eighteen years ago)

oh that sounds sweet, dude, but i'm gonna be in the greater mountain west all summer ;_;

river wolf, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 05:55 (eighteen years ago)

i was also expecting the house on reservation... you should try to talk k4rby and 4nn3 into buying this and turning it into a rental!

b-rad, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 16:10 (eighteen years ago)

and i realized saturday night that the l00ms reminded me of nico. that's 'cause they did a cover of 'i'll keep it with mine' which totally made everything click.

b-rad, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 16:12 (eighteen years ago)

The house on Reservation is a death trap and I would never encourage anyone to live there.

dan m, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 16:29 (eighteen years ago)

Although it does have some very entertaining sledding and drunk-people watching opportunities...

dan m, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 16:30 (eighteen years ago)

http://www.daverichey.com/pMachine/images/uploads/Smelt-dipping.jpg

So who's made pasties before? I'm going to make some on Sunday because it's been close to 9 months since I've had one.

joygoat, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 18:11 (eighteen years ago)

i keep forgetting to get my dad's recipe... i'll make some sooner or later, i'm sure.

b-rad, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 18:55 (eighteen years ago)

That picture is awesome.

dan m, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

I've never made pasties. Disgrace.

dan m, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

What are you going to put in them, the standard stuff? You totally need to make at least one curryfied test pasty.

Totally unrelated: do you think plantain pierogies would be any good?

dan m, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 18:59 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, and I don't know how much the Pewabic street house would go for here in Chicago. Given that it has a real lawn, probably more than your guess. Again, though, dependant on neighborhood.

dan m, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 19:02 (eighteen years ago)

plantain pierogies? wiki says folks in tropical regions treat plantains "in much the same way as potatoes," so it may not be a HUGE stretch...

b-rad, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 19:30 (eighteen years ago)

Pork + plantain in pierogi form = MY CULINARY BREAKTHRU

But probably not.

dan m, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 19:56 (eighteen years ago)

I'd never really eaten plantains before but I had them at a Dominican place in NYC last month and fried some up to go with my cuban pork shoulder a couple weeks ago.

This could could get close to being some sort of pasty / empanada combination.

joygoat, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 20:08 (eighteen years ago)

seven months pass...

I am eating Ambassador pizza and drinking Bell's.

dan m, Monday, 24 December 2007 01:13 (eighteen years ago)

i'm so bored that i'm reading threads on ILX! perfect timing on the thread revival, dan.

i found out today that the r41nb0w bar in 1shp3m1ng sells SPARKS thanks to their 'hey snowmobilers, drink sparks!' banner. pretty fucked.

j4sper ridge has a pretty great brown ale on tap right now, btw. worth stopping for if you have to make a drive down this way.

b-rad, Monday, 24 December 2007 02:35 (eighteen years ago)

Can I drink Bell's in Chicago or will I have to go a full twelve months sans Bells?

Though actually I miss Ambo pizza more. I can get good beer here but not good pizza. Stupid NW.

joygoat, Monday, 24 December 2007 05:39 (eighteen years ago)

larry's cheating the system and brewing a bunch of bell's beers with the name "kalamazoo beer" for the chicago market. sounds like he'll have an amber, a porter, and an IPA available. bil probably knows a little more about what's up, but here is where i've read it.

b-rad, Monday, 24 December 2007 14:19 (eighteen years ago)

other fun beer news: according to a map on the KBC website, they're starting midwest distribution. still not a fan of the blonde and the amber style rarely does much for me, though i picked up a six of the brown and i think it canned quite well. well enough that i'm bringing four more six packs downstate to give as gifts.

i understand bell's allegiance for the sake of sentimentality, though i still find it hard to be sad if i can't find there stuff when there are so many other good (if not better) beers available. that said, i'm still pulling for three floyd's to start michigan distribution, and it seems like the chicago beer folks treat them as an afterthought. additionally, i often forget how good two hearted is on tap.

b-rad, Monday, 24 December 2007 14:27 (eighteen years ago)

I'm actually looking forward to finding some Three Floyd's and New Holland beers around Chicago based on your and dan's repeated mentions. The ultra beer nerds at the giant store in Portland assured me that they don't distribute out west at all.

I kind of separate KBC beer from the KBC in general - to me it was all about going out, seeing everyone you know, hanging out, drinking two dollar pints, NOT smelling like smoke, etc. I liked partiular beers but I don't really feel the need to separate them from the place itself.

My burning desire to someday buy a huge storefront building in Calumet or Laurium isn't going away any time soon.

Did I tell you about the block of old-school rowhouses near Harter's party store that was for sale for like fifty grand? Not each, total for all four. Like something that would be in Brooklyn for EIGHT MILLION DOLLARS.

Yoopers: please provide me with arguments I can set forth to my parents in favor of retiring to the UP instead of North Dakota. Thank you in advance.

carl agatha, Friday, 24 February 2012 17:13 (thirteen years ago)

At least every other summer I suffer driving across the horrible nothing of ND just to get to the UP if that says anything.

I really have nothing good to say about ND at all, though I am well aware that many people probably would feel that way about the UP.

joygoat, Friday, 24 February 2012 17:20 (thirteen years ago)

Also this thread seems to really be "Jeff and Dan post on ilx instead of using IM"

joygoat, Friday, 24 February 2012 17:27 (thirteen years ago)

I really can't imagine what the shit they would do in North Dakota. My dad is a bigtime hunter/fisherperson, but my mom likes restaurants and the pleasures of (small town) civilization. I think she would flip out Jack Torrence style after about three months.

underminer of twenty years of excellent contribution to this borad (dan m), Thursday, 11 April 2024 19:29 (one year ago)

This timely revival allows me to share the bit about Bessemer, Michigan that I noticed in Wikipedia yesterday:

This section was made by somebody who lives in bessemer. However because of that, this part does not currently have citations.
Logging and fishing is a large part of the culture of Bessemer, Logging because people use wood stoves to heat their homes in the winter, And fishing for the reason of sport & as an hobby.

In vehicles, Electric cars are completely out of the question. As there are no electric car charging stations. And also there are a large portion of pickup trucks, they are good as they are easy to throw wood onto without damaging the truck, while also not being a hefty semi truck. So in that way it is perfect for logging. And its also not as small as a SUV which also has an roof in the way.

Hunting is also another part of the culture, both for sport and for the food that comes out of it.

Another part of the culture is how Bessemer is more attached to its locacllity to the UP rather then the state of michigan. Also see the Superior (proposed U.S. state) article. The citizens take pride in how they are locals and how the town is not a corporatized city, As they like the towns overall atmosphere.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 11 April 2024 20:27 (one year ago)

Bessemer is a second-rate Ironwood.
