UK Removes Holocaust Studying (AP)

Recently UK removed The Holocaust from its school curriculum
because it "offended" the Moslem population which claims it never
occurred.

This is a frightening portent of the fear that is gripping the
world and how easily each country is giving into it.

It is now more than 60 years after the Second World War in Europe
ended.

This e-mail is being sent as a memorial chain, in memory of the
20 million Russians, 10 million Christians, six million Jews, and
1,900 Catholic priests who were murdered, massacred, raped,
burned, starved and humiliated with the German and other
peoples looking the other way!

Now, more than ever, with Iran , among others, claiming the
Holocaust to be "a myth," it is imperative to make sure the world
never forgets.

This e-mail is intended to reach 40 million people worldwide!

Join us and be a link in the memorial chain and help us
distribute it around the world.

Please send this e-mail to 10 people you know and ask them to
continue the memorial chain.

Please don't just delete it. It will only take you a minute to
pass this along - Thanks!

Of course there is no UK Curriculum as Scotland has it's own education system.

As do the other countries according to that bbc link about the hoax email.

They've been repeating this on BBC HYS of course.

I'm more interested in who's originating these e-mails - is it just a rumor that got out of hand or is there some right wing think tank dreaming up these things?

rumour -- well reported news -- that got out of hand. it was in the news as a minor item a few weeks ago that teachers in england had dialled down teaching the holocaust in some schools because there was -- can't quite remember -- awkwardness? some backlash? from the kids (and parents?). obviously it's been blown up out of crazy proportion but it isn't a flat-out hoax.

Probably the same type of bold liars that came up with this:

"Ismail Ax “is a well known phrase in the Muslim world. The Muslims believe that the [Old Testament] is wrong in saying that Abraham was supposed to kill Isaac with a knife, rather they believe he was supposed to kill Ishmael (Ismail) with an Axe"

as soon as they heard of "Ismail Ax"

In the same way, things like this freak me out because I feel so immersed in this kind of rhetoric that I tend to think of it as uniquely American and that this debate is a bit less hysterical back in the UK, but I'm probably wrong and I've just become more finely attuned to all this in general. I do the typical (bad) expat thing of obsessing over news and media from home but I still feel like I am looking back on it all through some sort of weird American prism. But no, the whole world is just going crazy.

admrl, Friday, 20 April 2007 23:26 (eighteen years ago)

there's barely been any debate on it here. tbh when i read the story -- way before i saw this email -- i was a bit 'fuck's sake' about it. teaching of history is massively skewed toward history of totalitarian regimes here, and that is a problem but given the hysterical anti-muslim rhetoric that's becoming creepily commonplace in the uk media, i think teaching the holocaust is a good idea and the teachers were being weak.

Actually I responded by saying something about how you just reach a point of holocaust-saturation by high school growing up Jewish, and that my whole family had come over before WWII anyway. Then she told me some story about a head shop she visited that had a secret shelf of Nazi paraphernalia. As it happened, the opening band's songs were all in German, although I hadn't connected those things until now. None of it mattered anyway, as I am married, and later her Irish boyfriend showed up and I proceeded to buy him a Guiness and quiz him about the famine.

fifteen years pass...

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/aug/13/the-holocaust-happened-on-british-soil-inquiry-into-nazi-camps-creates-bitter-divide-on-alderney

Trevor Davenport, the director of Alderney’s museum, seethes when the Observer raises the issue at his home, a few fields from one of the island’s four Nazi camps. Pointing to the fact that just eight Jews are officially recorded as dying on Alderney, Davenport said linking the Holocaust to Alderney is a “step too far”.

And he accuses Sir Eric Pickles, the UK’s Holocaust envoy leading the inquiry, of “wokeism”.

Monthly Python (Tom D.), Sunday, 13 August 2023 12:47 (two years ago)

now Eric Pickles is woke! Michael Rosenburg also had steam coming out of Ian Austin's ears for correcting him that there were actually holocaust victims and Nazi camps on British territory. It's an irrefutable fact and the denialism about this from some people borders on mental illness.

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Sunday, 13 August 2023 12:57 (two years ago)

without getting into numbers games the very idea of a Nazi camp where there were only 8 people murdered is so fucking preposterous

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Sunday, 13 August 2023 13:11 (two years ago)

Was Mr. Davenport related to a collaborator?

Chevy Chase drumming mystery (Boring, Maryland), Sunday, 13 August 2023 13:17 (two years ago)

Himmler memo to Alderny SS: keep it polite and don't murder too many Jews and enemies of the third reich because it might annoy the brits

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Sunday, 13 August 2023 13:37 (two years ago)

But seriously, a normal person, especially one running a museum, even if you wanted to deny any local culpability or bury an uncomfortable past would say some bullshit like”it was awful what the Germans did. We all resisted of course.” Rather than responding like this weirdo did (‘define “massacre”’)

Chevy Chase drumming mystery (Boring, Maryland), Sunday, 13 August 2023 15:58 (two years ago)

With the island largely evacuated before the Nazis’ arrival, a pivotal witness to subsequent events was George Pope. One of the few to remain on Alderney during the occupation, Pope identified an open grave on Longy Common “where approximately 200 to 300 Jews were buried”.

most of these inbred yokels parents/grandparents had already split before the nazi occupation

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Sunday, 13 August 2023 16:26 (two years ago)

Ofc the original email blamed Muslims.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Sunday, 13 August 2023 21:14 (two years ago)

xp that's kind of what I don't get about this - Alderney was evacuated, so it's not like there were British people there collaborating with the Nazis like on Jersey/Guernsey. If the Holocaust did happen there, the inhabitants of Alderney aren't to blame for it, so why are they so defensive about it?

Colonel Poo, Sunday, 13 August 2023 22:05 (two years ago)

They didn’t participate, but wished they did?

Chevy Chase drumming mystery (Boring, Maryland), Sunday, 13 August 2023 22:19 (two years ago)

I think it's more like being defensive about the bullshit propaganda version of events their parents/grandparents were fed and they also choose to believe, that the camps and mass murder of Jews only happened in other occupied places and for some mysterious reason (or just plain old British exceptionalism) was minimised to single figure victims on this exceptional place. It was only a small island with four forced labour/concentration camps. But still camps that were only a 1 hour crossing away from occupied France for the unfortunate French Jews/Red Army POWs they want to believe were never murdered there in considerable numbers.

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Monday, 14 August 2023 01:12 (two years ago)

Michael Rosen got attacked for suggesting the example of the Nazi occupation of Guernsey where all nine Jews from the island were deported to Auschwitz. That this suggests the blinkered and triumphalist propaganda manner in which the holocaust is still taught in Britain is not helpful.

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Monday, 14 August 2023 01:40 (two years ago)

Thanks calz, appreciate the context.
