I live in Fayetteville, AR and I've been intending to check out two other college towns "up there": Columbia, MO and Lawrence, KS. The other weekend I was gonna leave for Lawrence Saturday morning, spend the night up there, and come back Sunday night, but then I didn't. What should someone who'll be in Columbia from lunchtime Saturday to lunchtime Sunday see/eat/do?

Is that first picture the intersection that the theater/venue/bar thing is off? I like that place.

Really?

I'm all for recycling, but there were more effective ways to deal with empty bottles, especially when the rest of the county said hooey to any deposit.

I was an extremely jaded and angry twenty-year old when I left Columbia. Some of my most intense best and worst memories stem from that place.

I have to remind myself that it's not 1994 there anymore. Kountry Kitchen probably got rid of its faux sandlewood dining tables long ago.

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 23 April 2007 17:51 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, yay, a thread about my hometown. One of the most blissfully happy periods in my life was during my senior of High School when I took music courses at the University. Dad drove me there and I made the return trip to High School on foot, free to stroll through Downtown at a leisurely pace.

A regular part of this routine involved dropping in at the Middle Eastern grocery to pick up a chocolate-covered Halvah, which I'd consume during the rest of the trip. My usual route ran along a good portion of 9th Street, although many of the shops have changed since 1984-85, so the picture above doesn't trigger in me the vivid nostalgia it otherwise might. The endpoints of my journey are also represented above: the University campus by the handsome yellow stone facade of the Memorial Union, and Hickman High School by its implausible mascot, the Kewpie doll.

What should someone who'll be in Columbia from lunchtime Saturday to lunchtime Sunday see/eat/do?

This Saturday-Sunday or on any random weekend?

For entertainment, I'd recommend checking out a film at Ragtag (this Saturday = the Namesake and the Host--obviously, the latter would be more fun) and a show at either the Blue Note/Mojo's/Eastside Tavern...all of these places are downtown...comomusic.com has a calendar (stay away from the message board, though).

This Saturday, I'd see Shirrelle C. Limes & The Lemons at the Blue Note (if you're into jam bands, stay afterwards for Bockman). If you want to hang out at a bar, Eastside Tavern is probably your best bet. It's on Broadway (the main street downtown).

For food, it depends on what you're craving. For pizza, everyone raves about Shakespeare's (also downtown). I'm a fan of Addison's and Flat Branch Pub (both downtown 'American' food joints). If you're into jazz/good food, you could take a trip south to Murry's. For dessert, check out Sparky's, which is downtown on Ninth Street; their green tea ice cream is awesome. For breakfast, Uprise Bakery is great; their baked goods are the best in town. People always seem to like Main Squeeze (veganish place), but I can't afford it.

Other places to check out:
For cds/general questions, Kevin's World (across from the Blue Note on 9th Street)
For nature walks, Rock Bridge State Park (south Columbia) or MKT trail (throughout Columbia)
For clothes, Maude Vintage (on Broadway) is cool...Columbia has a lot of great vintage clothes stores, but Maude V. is my favorite.
If I were you, I'd definitely check out the campus itself, obviously. It's quite nice...
If you're somehow bored, you could always just go to the Cherry Street Artisan...the food is way too expensive, though
If you want to play DDR with kids wearing bondage pants and Pantera t-shirts, Brady Commons is the place to go.

Avoid:
The Mall
Other chains, especially Wal-Mart

BURGERS AT BOOCHES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Beth Parker, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 00:28 (eighteen years ago)

A few years ago we flew to St. Louis, rented a car and drove to Columbia for a Guided By Voices show at the Blue Note, part of a big triangle road trip that continued to Nashville and up to Annapolis.

Anyway, when we showed up at the Blue Note we were told that Bob Pollard had hurt his back and GBV had cancelled. We didn't mind. It made the crazy trip even crazier. Our ticket money was refunded, but we were told that the opening band was performing for free. About a dozen people stayed. The band was Brian Jonestown Massacre and they played until 1:00. They were tremendous. I love Columbia. Someday I'll go back and have more of those burgers.

Beth Parker, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 00:37 (eighteen years ago)

Shakespeare's Pizza! Oh man, I used to go up to Columbia all the time for shows--it seemed like few bands worth seeing stopped over in Saint Louis. It was about two hours away but sometimes I'd go twice a week. My sister lived on campus near the two smokestacks and it always looked nicely eerie walking back from Mojo's.

I'm in Lawrence, KS now and it doesn't seem that different from Columbia.

smarmasaurus, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 00:48 (eighteen years ago)

Tell me they're not really going to install trolley tracks.

Haha, that's a genius idea! But no...instead, they took down the canopies. And homeless people are now angry.

Also, I've never had a Booches Burger. But I've had CJ's Wings!

haha im too lazy to read this thread but i HAVE lived in columbia, mo (for a ridiculously short period of time, ie a college semester in which i spent most of my time at other colleges), so like, yo.

good library at mu, what was it called, ellis?

deeznuts, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 02:11 (eighteen years ago)

I was told by someone that Lawrence, KS and CoMO share the same city planner. I've only been to Lawrence once, but it definitely had the same feel, at least the layout of the downtown area.

I spent 6 years in Columbia, from 2001 to early 2006, getting my B.A. and then bumming around for a few years. To the person visiting there soon, I offer a little known nature walk: the Bench in the Middle of Nowhere. No one ever goes there, but there's a nice little path, it's just a mowed path through some tall grass that goes on and on, through a forest, along a river, on someone's property. It's a really extensive path, but I usually only went about 10 minutes in, where there's a nice bench in the middle of nowhere. You're not supposed to be there at night but of course that's the best time.

Directions: from Stadium, south of the University of Missouri-Columbia campus, go south on Rock Quarry Road. Keep going straight, across Nifong/Grindstone, until you get to a gravel road. Go straight, onto the gravel road. After it feels like you've been on the gravel road a little too long, just before you reach Highway 163, you'll see a bridge on the left, and a parking lot. Park there. Go across the road, across the fence (there's a little section there with the top part of it missing where you can cross easily), and follow the path up.

I loved Columbia. I wanted to move back there when I got back from China, but ended up moving to Chicago instead.

PS I'll be back in Columbia for my birthday on May 17th, so if you hear of a party for someone named Zach around then and you're there, you should come by and say hello to me in the gutter.

Z S, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 02:20 (eighteen years ago)

ps there's also a note underneath a tree there that reads, "Dear Red, If you're reading this, you've gotten out. And if you've come this far, maybe you're willing to come a little further. You remember the name of the town, don't you? I could use a good man to help me get my project on wheels. I'll keep an eye out for you and the chessboard ready. Remember, Red. Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things and no good thing ever dies. I will be hoping that this letter finds you, and finds you well. Your friend, Andy."

Z S, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 02:22 (eighteen years ago)

I've been there, I think! I might be confusing it with a different place, though. Did you come across some, er, strange animals while walking on this path?

Tape Store, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 02:23 (eighteen years ago)

I did. The worst was domesticated, though. This big dog on a leash jumped through the air and was stopped mid-air, a few feet from my face, by his owner. It was terrifying.

Z S, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 03:26 (eighteen years ago)

And by strange, I mean exotic. But yes, I think we're talking about the same place.

Tape Store, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 03:35 (eighteen years ago)

Thanks, Tape Store, for the suggestions. I'm probably going to try and make it up to Columbia if and when I make my pilgrimage to Branson for the 4th of July. I've always wanted to go to Branson on the 4th of July and get all drunk and fucked up and buy some gaudy American flag t-shirt and just put it on and walk around and laugh and be fucked up and obnoxious in Branson on the 4th of July. Then I'll go to Columbia!

I also want to go to Lambert's and get a roll thrown at me.

Tape Store, Monday, 2 July 2007 05:40 (eighteen years ago)

no I think it actually turns out I'm going with my wife down to her dad's place that day to do the BBQ and fireworks thing on his 40 acres down in the Ouachitas, but she was telling me about a Sonic Youth show at an Urban Outfitters in Lawrence she wanted to go to this summer, so we'll probably go to that and then Columbia the day before or after. I'm booking shows for a mini-tour a friend of mine is taking to celebrate his 21st. Where in town would you suggest I try to book for a young man with an acoustic guitar who enjoys very mild but not insignificant local fame in the St. Louis area?

en i see kay, Monday, 2 July 2007 07:20 (eighteen years ago)

In Columbia, I mean.

en i see kay, Monday, 2 July 2007 07:21 (eighteen years ago)

Hmm...Depends on his style of music (is it straightforward folky singer-songwriter stuff or more experimental?)

Best hipster options:
Mojo's
Eastside Tavern

Nice quirky venues:
No Coast
Ragtag Cinema
Cafe Berlin

If you want a really odd venue (e.g. record store, basement), let me know...I have friends at most of the linked places, so if you're having trouble, let me know.

There's also The Blue Fugue, but they're shitty at marketing, so I won't link.

Tape Store, Monday, 2 July 2007 07:36 (eighteen years ago)

He's very Tweedy-like, I guess, and big on entertaining as well as just playing the music (for example, he managed to plan and successfully execute a full-on Friars'-style roast of a friend of ours).

He's always happy just to play at open mic nights and stuff, but I'm trying to push him slightly more hipster-y, especially since he's starting to play with Fruity Loops and producing some pretty interesting stuff.

Most importantly, though, I think we're looking for a place we can book on relatively short notice, since the tour will start on July 26th or so. The No Coast looks promising.

I don't know. I wouldn't be that surprised to see some of the Missourians who moved to Chicago in the last few years come back this way. A lot have gone back and forth a fair amount already. I think that Cave has got a pretty solid grip on its identity, but things change.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 30 June 2009 18:53 (sixteen years ago)

Wow, I was doing a google search to check up on the d-bag politician father of someone I knew in high school (in Farmington, MO), and came across a bunch of stuff that Kevin Engl3r said recently. Engl3r is the Senate Floor Majority leader in Missouri, a Republican. He's also the former mayor of Farmington, and I used to go over to his house occasionally to drink vodka and play Grand Theft Auto III with his son, who was also kind of d-bag.

Anyways, I guess he introduced a bill to give the death penalty to people who litter, then withdrew the bill, saying he was joking. Which is kind of stupid, but whatever. Then he said

"These dumb rednecks I got in my district throw it in the back of the truck and expect it not to blow out," Engler said.

Oops! He also called litterers in Farmington "white trash". Oops!
Then he defended himself by saying that people of all races can be white trash, and that he wanted people to wonder if they were being white trash before they littered.

Way to go Farmington and Missouri!

Sorry it took forever to respond, I've been camping/driving across the country for the last few days. Awesome to run into you Sean - we did end up making it to Ragtag in the end, where I ran into el Tape Store (cool surprise!).

What happened at ragtag was really fucking weird. We were sitting outside, and then some dude busts out an acoustic guitar and starts singing. At first I thought he was being all "guy in the corner of a party with acoustic guitar", but then he started singing really loudly (Jason Mraz/John Mayer style, sorta), and then an ACCORDION comes in. And all of this is super-fake impromptu, like "Oh, do you have an accordion? well join on in!", only the accordion player magically knows the song already and everything is arranged. 10 minutes later, a dude with a giant stand-up bass walks in and pulls the same move ("Oh, mind if I set up, lemme see I think I know how this song would go, and-a-one and-a-BOOoooosh"). It was absolutely terrible, like a small-scale version of getting flash-mobbed by three douchebags. We moved inside, but the last time I glanced out there on the patio there was a big spotlight on Jason Mraz. Weird.

Oh man, a google maps street view tour is not inspiring confidence, housing-wise. AFAICT shotgun shacks in the inner "bad" parts give way directly to treeless suburban-style dystopia in the "good" parts. Is there any part of town that isn't like this? Where's the best place to live (for a 3-person fam)?

iirc, there's a nice, quiet neighborhood in the blocks west of Providence, between Broadway and Business Loop 70. Still really close to the downtown stuff, not so suburby.

Also lots of good places in East Campus, if you don't mind hearing the occasional drunken "woooos" at night.

yeah, a friend of mine used to babysit for a couple w/ a small child and i'm pretty sure they lived east... maybe a bit east of east campus but before the highway

anyway you can def find nice places in east campus if you don't mind mild stuff like that

one year passes...

Sunglasses flying all over the place.

how's life, Friday, 4 April 2014 00:38 (eleven years ago)

I haven't been up there since 2000. Weird to think how little time of my life I actually spent there. Gotta say though, I did cram a lot of doing things into that short window.

Sometimes I get a little second-homesick and do what I did tonight, cruise up and down Ninth Street with Google Street View. They've got my old street near Paquin Towers on there now, so I saw that house for the first time in awhile.

I don't know where I'm going with this. I see that alley and that house and that house, and oh jesus that house and... and after awhile, I don't feel like driving seven hours up there for a weekend anymore.

That feeling won't last forever though. Just for now.

three years pass...

The most Columbia thing to happen this weekend was when I saw in front of the columns the Marching Mizzou band pay tribute to the solar eclipse by performing "Soak Up the Sun" by Sheryl Crow.
