The way to tackle alcohol "abuse" is to make life so interesting that nobody wants to get competely out of it.That means redistributing opportunity, wealth and power to everybody.

This blog is often quite snippy, the HYS comments speak for themselves, but this one is gold:

We’ve gotta stand up, we’ve gotta be strong We’ve gotta hold our nerve until the job is done And they’ve made a killing, They don’t care about the blood that they’re spilling
9/11, 9/11, what went down with building 7? Ever since that fateful day our civil rights have disappeared A global fascist state draws near and our freedom slips away And they don’t give a stuff They’ve made that clear enough So now it’s up to us to bring ‘em down

I like how it manages to throw in some conspiracy theory with the "building 7" line, that really spices it up.

Isenhorn This poem is one of the most exploited and is used whether or not it is actually suitable to the topic at hand. How about an updated version: First they came from India And I did not speak out Because we owed it to the Indians Then they came from Pakistan And I did not speak out Because we had alredy let the Indians in Then they came from Somalia And I did not speak out Even though I wanted to Then they came from Poland And I did not speak out Because I was called a racist Then they came from everywhere And event though I tried to speak Nobody listened

― Enormous Epic (Matt DC), Thursday, 30 April 2009 14:21 (sixteen years ago)
Without wishing to descend into HYS ranting, what is is with the BBC wanting everyone to "share their opinions"? I go to the BBC because it's the nearest thing to an authoritative news source we have, and I don't give a flying fuck what Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells has to say about "issues", and even if I did I certainly wouldn't want to hear their views via the BBC.
This country, going to the dogs I tell you, I blame the 60s.

(xxpost) I think there's something in the BBC Charter that says that they have to allow people a way of putting across their opinions about BBC output?
― snoball, Thursday, 30 April 2009 16:12 (sixteen years ago)
That's fair enough, but should it then follow that people should be able to put their opinions across about anything, all the time? And should this "content" be included on their website and in news bulletins on TV?
― zero learnt from nero (Neil S), Thursday, 30 April 2009 16:16 (sixteen years ago)
It would turn the BBC in to some kind of "message board"!

― Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Thursday, 30 April 2009 16:19 (sixteen years ago)
(xxxpost) I think that asking people to send in videos is going a bit too far - it's almost like they're planning to make a cheap no-presenter "Points of View" style programme. And it also troubles me as it's part of a wider problem with the decline of television - TV companies making programmes that are just a string of "rude" two year old YouTube clips (ie, not rude at all). Really, television needs to be shaken out of it's stupor and TV executives need to realise that to suvive they need to give the public something that they can't get from an online video site or a Facebook page.

Premoderated posts included one from Chris, Guildford, posted at 8.59am, which attracted 51 recommendations of support. He wrote: "Totally agree. Ought to be imposed in the UK too, asap. Bring back some respectable family values. Why do we have to suffer 'gay pride' festivals? Would I be allowed to organise a 'straight pride' festival? No, thought as much!! If homosexuality is natural, as we are forced to believe, how can they sustain the species? I suggest all gays are put on a remote island somewhere and left for a generation - after which, theoretically there should be none left!"
Another, from Aaron in Freetown, said: "Bravo to the Ugandans for this wise decision, a bright step in eliminating this menace from your society. We hope other African nations will also follow your bold step."

The only solution is stricter government controls on the content of the internet, and harsher punishments for those who violate those controls. Everyone involved in this hacking attack should receive no less than 25 years in prison, and should have to register as sex offenders.Richard C. Mongler, London, UK
