Black Licorice - C/D

Probably the most divisive flavor of them all. The majority hates black licorice with a singular passion, but those of us who are right and pure and good of heart adore it without qualification. I have been known to enjoy not just twists and jellybeans but gum, altoids, spools, and even the watered down Good'n'Plenty variety. Someday soon, I will invest in some Ouzo or Arrak to see if it is as they say.

In conclusion: FUCK ALL HATAZ.

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 00:31 (eighteen years ago)

classic, good with cigarettes

strgn, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 00:33 (eighteen years ago)

I don't do cigarettes, but I savor the occassional cigar. Do you think it would be close enough?

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 00:36 (eighteen years ago)

fuckin' dud

kingfish, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 00:38 (eighteen years ago)

I like to buy fresh black liquorice - 'black' - and leave it in an unlidded wooden box for a year or so until it's so dry and hard it makes me feel like a sailor.

I'm still too much of a landlubber for salted liquorice though, particularly the dreaded 'double-salted'. Is there not a 'triple-salted' as well? Is salted liquorice just a North American thing?

Huey in Melbourne, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 00:39 (eighteen years ago)

I had the idea it was a scandanavian thing. Tuomas?

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 00:41 (eighteen years ago)

OH BLACK LICORICE!!! Panda brand! Ouzo! Sambuca!

What are the licorice Altoids like? I've only just started seeing them around.

Jaq, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 00:41 (eighteen years ago)

sooo classic. that cherry shit tastes too waxy!

tehresa, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 00:41 (eighteen years ago)

> What are the licorice Altoids like?

They dissolve a little too fast, but are suitably intensely flavored.

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 00:43 (eighteen years ago)

I love those woody licorice sticks that you can chew on. Haven't had one in years, though.

Beth Parker, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 00:43 (eighteen years ago)

WikiWarning: "Consumption of black liquorice may result in stool that is bright green in color".

Amanda to thread!!!

Classic x100000000000000000000000000000000000000000

I bought this kind from a mail order company in the US and it's by far my favorite ever but of course, it's not available anymore and I don't know where else to get it. Panda is available everywhere around here so that's usually what I buy but there's some good stuff at Trader Joe's that I keep meaning to make a pilgrimage for.

Jenny, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 00:47 (eighteen years ago)

Probably you get the woody sticks at Health Food Stores. I hate to ASK those HFS clerks where things are, though—a weird phobia of mine—so consequently I do without a lot of healthy stuff.
I always used to get Good 'n' Plenties at the movies. I'd always suck the candy coating off, down to the lovely slimy licorice lozenges. Mmmm.

xpost. Duh. Slow typist.

Beth Parker, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 00:48 (eighteen years ago)

Jenny, those candies!!!!!!
I MUST HAVE THEM.

Beth Parker, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 00:49 (eighteen years ago)

Fuck, healthy licorice is such bullshit though.

But the nasty cheap stuff is classique

Drooone, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 00:53 (eighteen years ago)

I can take about ten Good 'n Plenty, but then I start to feel sick. Mostly dud.

Tape Store, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 01:31 (eighteen years ago)

Well, that's why I said "used to."
I don't eat any of that crap candy at the movies any more. I don't eat it at home—why should I eat it in the movie theater? Some Pavlovian thing? I AM MORE EVOLVED THAN THAT!!!!

Beth Parker, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 01:36 (eighteen years ago)

you assholes ruin jellybeans for everyone

max, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 01:43 (eighteen years ago)

Huh? Where did we say that jelly beans are bad? Huh? Huh? Where?
Okay, I said "crap candy." That doesn't mean that I don't like crap! I just stay away from it because of my WILL OF IRON.

Beth Parker, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 01:45 (eighteen years ago)

CLASSIC. I love black licorice! The best I've found has been in Germany and it's very good but very strong. Also great is licorice tea. Sounds strange but honestly, Yogi brand Egyptian Licorice Tea is amazing. If you like licorice, you have to try it.

ENBB, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 01:48 (eighteen years ago)

I love that tea! And it's just as soothing as Throat Coat if you have a sore throat.

Beth Parker, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 01:49 (eighteen years ago)

Yay! I knew I couldn't be the only one. Everyone thinks I'm odd when I tell them about it but it's one of those things you have to try to believe.

ENBB, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 01:52 (eighteen years ago)

I always use two teabags at a time for ultimate licoriceness.

Beth Parker, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 01:53 (eighteen years ago)

Me too!

ENBB, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 01:54 (eighteen years ago)

Black licorice is among the greatest flavors in the world. Not kidding.

John Justen, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 01:55 (eighteen years ago)

black licorice all the way in all forms
love it so much, always have
i mean, i even use anise toothpaste ('green beaver' hippie brand lol - but it works well! omg they should make anise-flavoured floss!!)

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 02:08 (eighteen years ago)

Tom's of Maine used to have a great fennel toothpaste, but they must have changed the formula—now it has a funny taste.

Beth Parker, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 02:10 (eighteen years ago)

I've tired the TOM one and just couldn't get used to it. I think I'm just too conditioned to expect toothpaste = mint.

ENBB, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 02:11 (eighteen years ago)

green beaver is way better and doesn't have sls in it and also is called green beaver
(and is cdn obv)

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 02:12 (eighteen years ago)

Fennel has become my new favorite vegetable - great chopped up fresh in a salad or steamed/sautéed. The licorice scent is great and the mild sweet flavor is subtle.

Jaq, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 02:17 (eighteen years ago)

Beth Parker, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 02:19 (eighteen years ago)

max, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 02:23 (eighteen years ago)

Beth, if you can find the Pontefract cakes anywhere, get them! And then get some for me.

Jesse got me some Chinese (I think) licorice for Christmas and it was hard and covered in salty red powder and man alive it was really, really not good.

Jenny, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 03:01 (eighteen years ago)

I don't trust people who dislike licorice.

my tin of licorice altoids is nearly empty, i foolishly kept giving them to people who would then spit them out and tell me off, i have wised up now but it is too late for that little tin, ask not for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for my licorice altoids.

estela, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 03:42 (eighteen years ago)

I LOVE all black licorice, even shit jeallybean flavor. Actually I tend to like the cheapier varieties---my very top favorite is RED VINES (brand) (aka American Licorice Company) black licorice. OH NUMS. Anise, ouzo, licorice tea! I like chewing on a plain old licorice root even though it puts big neon arrows around me saying RAISED BY HILLBILLIES.

Licorice root has a chemical 1000x sweeter than sugar!

Abbott, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 03:53 (eighteen years ago)

Some of my best memories are buying my first car & then drirving all around town with my left foot out the window & a big stick of licorice root in my mouth.

salty licorice is the best candy in the world. staple here in scandinavia, when I grew up and realized salty licorice wasn't the most popular candy worldwide was like learning santa claus doesn't exist x 1000. I loved it from I was a little kid, never thought of it as unusual, strong or "bitter". just pleasant and delicious. also the saltier the better.

Does anyone remember Black Bart gum? It was jet black and way more licoricey than Black Jack-- I think it must be the gum described in David Bowie's "Sweet Head." I haven't seen it since the mid-80s. Do they still make it anywhere?

annoying in the way that all npr stories are annoying, but contains interesting information, like this:

the secret source of sweetness in licorice flavors: It's the aromatic compound anethole. (Well, OK, in tarragon it's anethole's close cousin, estragole.) Subtly but insistently, anethole weaves its sweet and haunting anise theme into the essential oils of plants

if the writer would stop talking about herself for 5 minutes it would be an interesting piece, but whatever

two years pass...

- eating weird Swedish sweets in the shape of sinisterly cheery cat-faces, two-thirds quite sweet black liquorice and one-third parma violet flavour, like eating liquorice with a light dusting of old lady perfume. Undecided on this combination.

(Made by Bubs Godis, who also do chilli + cherry liquorice, pear / liquorice bear heads, and raspberry / liquorice skulls. Oh hot damn they make colabottle+liquorice stars too, why did the shop not have those?)

- got a bottle of Finnish liquorice-flavoured vodka Salmiakki Koskenkorva hiding in my room too, not sure if this will be a Christmas present for someone else or if I'm going to drink it allll myself. Had it once before, unexpectedly drinkable and black as ink.

I'm a huge black licorice fan, but I think I've met my match with these. I can't even finish a single lozenge, they're so strong I have to spit them out! I've kept them at my desk because I'm determined that they will win me over eventually but holy fuckballs.

two years pass...

Reached the bottom of my bottle of Salmiakki Koskenkorva (see posts by guymauve and myself upthread) to find that after pouring a final shot there was about 3mm of thick black sludge absolutely welded to the bottom.

Poured a little unflavoured vodka in and gave it a shake to un-weld it. Such inky droplets.

Rest assured I have ordered a new bottle.

(In my previous post I wasn't sure whether to keep the previous bottle for myself or give it as a present. Well, I kept it for myself but opened it with the possible recipient and poured two shots. The look on his face on tasting it... just as well I didn't give him the whole bottle. ALL THE MORE FOR ME.)

These are my faves. I would love to try try some salty liquorice with the same hardness/texture of Basset's Bassetti though. Italian pure liquorice pellets are good, an extreme flavour, most people find them foul. Salmiak is great, too.

my favourite italian pellets are actually not the pure ones but the ones with anise. I might use some to make this liquorice pudding, although I don't know if I will like liquorice + dairy.
