The ten largest UK towns not to have been conferred with city status. If anyone can find anything positive to say about any of these places, you're a wiser man than me.

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 12:13 (eighteen years ago)

Ha ha, Dudley, is there a worse town on earth?

Tom D., Tuesday, 24 April 2007 12:14 (eighteen years ago)

Yes. Guantanamo Bay.

the next grozart, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 12:17 (eighteen years ago)

dudley: the kind of place even brummies look down on
northampton: roadmenders

walsall:
bournemouth: alcopops

Bournemouth has a decent beach (and as with the City thread I've had some great nights out there). The rest can fuck off (Southend is grim - the pier's length was a psychological tactic).

blueski, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 12:20 (eighteen years ago)

University of Northampton is, technically, the third oldest university in the country behind Oxbridge!

xp

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 12:21 (eighteen years ago)

I've been to Dudley, Milton Keynes and Reading... and when I tell you Reading was best of the bunch, I think that's all you need to know about Dudley and Milton Keynes

Tom D., Tuesday, 24 April 2007 12:21 (eighteen years ago)

Reading: three hours' walk from train station to festival site
Dudley: Which bit of Spaghetti Junction is that again?
Northampton: Sarah Beeney in a quiet week
Luton: only 33 miles to go
Milton Keynes: three hours' walk from train station to shopping centre
Walsall: erstwhile "short cut" when the M6 was jammed up
Bournemouth: can't afford Poole
Southend: K-Punk
Swindon: Mark Lamarr
Huddersfield: erm

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 12:22 (eighteen years ago)

oh yeah, "guacamole"

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 12:23 (eighteen years ago)

Alan Moore was born, bred and continues to live in Northampton, which I think is a point in its favour.

Neil S, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 12:23 (eighteen years ago)

Huddersfield: erm

Huddersfield: Festival of contemporary music (or summat like that).

Billy Dods, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 12:27 (eighteen years ago)

Alan Moore was born, bred and continues to live in Northampton, which I think is a point in its favour.

Apparently, roughly 80% of Northampton's female Goth population aged between 16 and 25 has had its arse pinched by Alan Moore at some point.

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 12:28 (eighteen years ago)

it was either him or you

blueski, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 12:31 (eighteen years ago)

16-25 is far too old.

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 12:32 (eighteen years ago)

andrew collins?

acrobat, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 12:37 (eighteen years ago)

Lesley Jospeh as well.

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 12:39 (eighteen years ago)

oh yeah, "guacamole"

-- Marcello Carlin,

is this a reference to peter mandelson? in which case, surely that was hartlepool?

600, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 12:52 (eighteen years ago)

And it wasn't actually Peter Mandelson, it was a relatively unknown visiting American researcher.

Forest Pines, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 12:53 (eighteen years ago)

Reading: polytechnic

Tom D., Tuesday, 24 April 2007 13:23 (eighteen years ago)

I love Skye but I've chosen Arran.

onimo, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 13:23 (eighteen years ago)

I know

I know you know, but it's obligatory to point it out after anyone says it.

onimo, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 13:24 (eighteen years ago)

Arran would probably be my second choice, but Skye is really special, both sets of Cullins and the Quirang.

Ed, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 13:25 (eighteen years ago)

Bauhaus were from Northampton weren't they?

NickB, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 13:26 (eighteen years ago)

Britain is crap, isn't it? Well, most of England at any rate.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 13:26 (eighteen years ago)

We lack proper mountains.

Milton Keynes: polytechnic
Walsall: polytechnic
Bournemouth: polytechnic
Southend-on-Sea: polytechnic
Swindon: polytechnic
Huddersfield: polytechnic

And your point is?

Fck you metro-snobs. I like all these places. Whether it's 78 Derngate (Northampton), the New Art Gallery (Walsall), the beaches and gardens of Bournemouth, the amazing buildings in Huddersfield, I would visit these places anytime.

Ned Trifle II, Friday, 27 April 2007 11:06 (eighteen years ago)

Britain is crap, isn't it? Well, most of England at any rate.
