The Worst Romantic Comedy In History

Not that romantic comedy is a genre known for its greatness, but can someone please tell me of a romantic comedy with a worse cast than this??

Ally, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The triumverate of Lara Flynn Boyle, Josh Charles, & Stephen Baldwin springs to mind right over here. Also notable for featuring an nth-tier Arquette sapling in the cast.

David Raposa, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

what on earth is your problem with mandy moore and the orange-haired girl?

ethan, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Perhaps the problem is with Frodo. And isn't Mandy a bit YOUNG to be frolicking around in such a thing?

David Raposa, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

mmmm...

ethan, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My problem with Elijah is that he should be doing something rather better than this, frankly. Then again, he was in Deep Impact.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

if it is worse than Meet Joe Black i shall eat my hat. but did Meet Joe Black count as a romantic comedy? hmm. OK, worse than Pretty Woman (which NO-ONE will EVER convince me had ANYTHING going for it).

katie, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

we have just got a load of new titles to sell at my *work*, one of which is "The War" starring our little Elijah aged about 4 by the looks of it, and Kevin Costner. and he did "Flipper". it is not screaming "quality control" to me (Sorry Emma!)

katie, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

pretty woman = OK

worst romcom all time = THE TALL GUY!! (yes i know phil masstransfer likes it i just cannot imagine why?¿!!¡@# @# @#

mark s, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ally: Please clarify your intentions here, as I am not certain if your post was intended as a a dis to Franka Potente, and I have sworn a solemn oath to destroy all who would insult her.

Colin Meeder, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pretty Woman is very possibly the most OFFENSIVE FILM I have ever seen!

katie, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Its a film about sucking and shopping.

Pete, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

haha funnier = sucking and FOPPING!!

mark s, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The WEDDING PLANNER! you know it makes sense...

Heartbreakers was good. I liked that. J. L-H *sigh*

j>e>l, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Franka is a very, very objectionable looking young woman, sorry.

My point is, though, I mean this is a horrible cast which makes no sense whatsoever together. Elijah Woods is a terrible leading man, he's freaky looking and Franka looks about 20 years older than him - and MANDY MOORE?

Ally, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Its a film about sucking and shopping.

Pete = Bongwater fan.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Pallbearer! (Just kidding, N. - it was ok)

You've Got Mail sucked bigtime tho'.

Jeff W, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No no no. The very, very, VERY worst romantic comedy ever is also the worst film of any kind ever: "Two Girls and a Guy."

Sample line of dialogue: "You just like HER because SHE'S really SMART and I'M just STREETWISE!"

Douglas, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You call that a romantic comedy, Douglas?

I somewhat liked that film, less in a film sense than in the sense it was obviously intended, which was to set Downey loose on character- improv versus two actresses who provided nice scenery but were resolutely not skilled enough to actually crowd out the scenes. Which was utterly in-character, given that the story is initially meant to present them as actually like that, these minimized women drawn to the oversized space-filling of RDJ. And then it all just goes entertainingly actor's-studio "let's hash out who these characters are," which is sort of shoddily pleasant if you remember to take it as an excercise and not a product.

Plus: best-executed sex scene maybe ever.

Nitsuh, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm not sure _Two Girls..._ qualifies as a COMEDY, in so far that it's intentionally trying to be funny. The few minutes I suffered through gave off a dramatic stench. And I don't just mean sexually.

(And the closing song, w/ Sarah Shannon & some other guy singing some standard ... whoo boy.)

Ally, does your question HAVE to be about past flicks? If not, try this: 40 Days and 40 Nights. Josh Hartnett can't possibly be _that_ hard up for cash after "Black Hawk Down":

http://us.imdb.com/Plot?0243736

Summary? Swear off getting laid, and this alone makes you special.

Nichole Graham, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Worked for Jesus.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Joei and I thought "When A Man Loves A Woman" was going to be a romantic comedy. So did everyone else in the theater. You've never SEEN such a shell-shocked theater...

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ally, does your question HAVE to be about past flicks? If not, try this: 40 Days and 40 Nights. Josh Hartnett can't possibly be _that_ hard up for cash after "Black Hawk Down"

I loved how Josh H. said he could relate to his character in 40 Days and 40 Nights because he once went for two weeks without sex.

Nicole, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

He refrained from masturbating for two weeks?

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i think 40 days and 40 nights is kind of sweet and gentle and i think that its neat that people are approaching catholicsim as an important part of someones life , not just as an excuse for fucking 6 year olds and drinking too much.

anthony, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, isn't it nice that they're approaching it from this new angle, then.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

jess, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How about every Meg Ryan movie ever made?

geeta, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Including Innerspace?

Nitsuh, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

now this seems to me to be a silly bit of casting:

http://www.empireonline.co.uk/news/news.asp?3748

katie, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sorry, Ally, I must destroy you. But I won't enjoy it.

Colin Meeder, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I hardly see how it's my fault if you like dodgy looking razorblade faced Germans.

Ally, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

On the other hand, I might enjoy it a little bit.

Colin Meeder, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yay! I love Mandy Moore! She just looks so sweet! Even her Neutrogena adverts don't annoy me. Cos she's lovely. I can't remember how her song went. I think the Arsemonkey might own it. I shall check.

Sarah, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

CANDY, I will sing it for you if you like Sarah '......I'm missing you like candyyyyyyyyyyy'.

Emma, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mandy Moore is also a dodgy looking razorblade faced German. Does anyone remember the Mandy Moore "review" on NYLPM that was basically a pedophilic wank fantasy? I can never look at her in the same way. I don't really mean it, she's not dodgy looking and razorblade faced, unlike Lola (COLIN), but I still get the creeps from her just from that bloody review, that's the entire reason I don't even read NYLPM anymore. I blame Ned, he was editor at the time. I think Kylie Minogue, Natalie Imbruglia, Guy Pearce, and Russell Crowe should star in a romantic comedy, a Neighbours reunion if you will.

Ally, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think Kylie Minogue, Natalie Imbruglia, Guy Pearce, and Russell Crowe should star in a romantic comedy, a Neighbours reunion if you will.

What a wonderful idea. But, can we swap Natalie Imbruglia for the girl who was Catherine in Ramsey Street and also starred in Pitch Black?

Jonnie, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes Emma please curtsey too! I think Ally is jealous of Mandy Moore well never mind you can't have everything eh?

Sarah, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I blame Ned, he was editor at the time.

AHEM. NYPLM is a group blog with access overseen by Tom. I am An Innocent in this matter.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Colin Meeder, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Screw it. Just go here: http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Towers/7839/destroyer.jpg

Colin Meeder, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think he should be in our Neighbours-related romantic comedy too.

Ally, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My problem with Elijah is that he should be doing something rather better than this, frankly. Then again, he was in Deep Impact.

Not to mention North! North, for heaven's sake!

Vinnie, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, and goddamn that's a mismatched cast. Doesn't Franka have like ten years on Mandy and Elijah is somewhere in between the two?

Vinnie, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Worked for Jesus.

***(dry tone) But how well? Searching my memory, no where did the Bible-thing say, "Jesus was a better person for remaining celibate."

(quick dash of heresy ended)***

Nichole Graham, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Damn, I'd forgotten about North...not unlike most of the viewing public.

Thank God "Lord of the Rings" came out first, else Elijah would drown in teen-comedy hell.

Nichole Graham, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ah, maybe not, but I think Paul was pleased. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

. I think Kylie Minogue, Natalie Imbruglia, Guy Pearce, and Russell Crowe should star in a romantic comedy, a Neighbours reunion if you will.

Oh dude you know I would be so there.

Anyway, a romantic comedy w/Elijah Wood would be offputting because he looks like a cat, and I don't want to watch cats getting it on. Sure, you think it would be funny to watch Mandy Moore make out with a cat, but you'd be disgusted with yourself afterward.

Nicole, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

not really fair considering that fred wrote that 'paedo' mandy moore review.

ethan, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ah, maybe not, but I think Paul was pleased. ;-)

***Oh yes? Why? Twas only more competition in the martyr market: "Celibacy makes me more prone to understand human suffering".

(OK, I _really_ must learn to use italics, or something...)***

Nichole Graham, Friday, 22 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Did he? That actually makes more sense than imaginable in my mind, what the hell happened to him? Oh yeah, Ethan, what's this I hear from Mr. White that you're heading into NYC?

Ally, Friday, 22 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ally SHHH!

ethan, Friday, 22 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nicole is my hero.

Dan Perry, Friday, 22 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

She's all our heroes, Dan.

N., Saturday, 23 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Didn't you even like the "Elephant Man" musical? Or the whole "Hitler...or Tampon..." bit? Or...

I more than like it -- it's easily one of my favorite comedies of all time. Admittedly, I very much like all three of the principals anyway, and someone who couldn't stand (Goldblum/Thompson/Atkinson) would probably be less favorably disposed.

Phil, Saturday, 23 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

(That was directed to mark s, btw)

Phil, Saturday, 23 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'Elephant!' was a good joke that has been copied many times since. Although, hang on, Mel Brooks got there first, kinda.

I can't remember anything else about it other than Emma Thompson's boobs flapping about.

N., Saturday, 23 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

AN IMAGE I DID NOT NEED.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 23 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

N: I actually _saw_ that twice: The first time, I clicked over from the middle, saw dear Ms. Thompson's chest, and said, "What the hell is this?" and nearly died laughing at how bad this flick was. After a while, I dared watch it again from the start, thinking that it couldn't have been that bad...

I was wrong;>

(dry tone) Were Emma's mortgage payments _that_ high? The fact that I couldn't get her chest out of my head (for days) disturbed the hell out of me, too.

I can’t imagine that many films are worse than The Holiday (2008) or In the Land of Women

Pretty sure the worst romantic comedy of all time is Never Been Kissed

formerly abanana (dat), Friday, 6 October 2023 13:48 (two years ago)

I'm a big fan of The Holiday (2006) (and pretty much all Nancy Myers movies outside of What Women Want) in all it's weird lumpen glory. It's one of those that is kind of baffling at first but its cozy hang out vibe can be infectious on rewatches, which is why it gets flogged on cable so much. Not familiar with The Holiday (2008) so cannot comment on that one.

More than most genres though, Rom Coms seem to provoke wildly diverse responses. I recently tried to watch Something Borrowed and hated it so so much, but then I saw on Twitter a few days later that someone I followed had started a long thread about how much they loved it.
