That is Skynet, and it will be the end of us all. WHY, CYBERDYNE, WHY???!!!!

kenan, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 20:56 (eighteen years ago)

Did I ask a stupid question?

Are they so easy to find that I'm just wasting people's time? Or should I just buy them, and I'm a jerk for trying to steal them?

I would honestly appreciate some advice.

Thanks

Colin_C., Tuesday, 24 April 2007 20:58 (eighteen years ago)

I'll mail you any other font you want if you promise not to use optima anymore.

kenan, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 21:01 (eighteen years ago)

it's not really cool to ask about illegal things (e.g. stealing software and the like) on a public forum.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 21:02 (eighteen years ago)

I am getting warm and fuzzy feelings from Triplex lately.

kenan, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 21:02 (eighteen years ago)

I use Optima as my screen font. Don't hate me.

Alba, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 21:07 (eighteen years ago)

I'm using Optima because I'm creating a design based on the Trojan condom motif (which uses Optima or a modified Optima).

I'm probably not getting paid (and I'm a poor 22 year old) so it seems ridiculous to pay 24 dollars for it and another 24 for the italics.

I didn't know it was illegal until you just informed me...

I don't even download music for free, but asking for a free font doesn't seem like that big of a deal.

Sorry if it is...maybe I'll have to buy it or change my design plan...

Colin_C., Tuesday, 24 April 2007 21:10 (eighteen years ago)

I will send you the fonts you need if you answer the following questions:

1) Name three shared albums (+192kbps only) that others have successfully downloaded from you in the past week

2) What is rockism? (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum)

3) Post a link to your favorite picture of Cat Power

4) Which artist is better, Sufjan Stevens or Deerhoof? Why? (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum)

Edward III, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 21:11 (eighteen years ago)

Is this the correct answer to #3?

kenan, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 21:16 (eighteen years ago)

I didn't know it was illegal until you just informed me...

??! So why did you think they were charging for it?

Alba, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 21:17 (eighteen years ago)

The Trojan condom packet is nothing like Optima is it? Estee Lauder uses it though.

lfam, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 21:32 (eighteen years ago)

EDWARD, I KNOW YOU'RE PROBABLY JOKING BUT WHAT THE HELL I'M DESPERATE!

1) I don't use a file-sharing program so the answer is "none" but within the past week or so I've sent my Mom burned copies of my Le Tigre albums (the self-titled album and "Feminist Sweepstakes") and sent my Dad a copy of Born to Run that I bought used on Amazon.

2) Rockism is an ideology of music criticism that suggests some forms of music are more authentic than others. Namely, that the traditional rock n' roll song structure and instrumentation (guitars, bass, drums, vocals) is a more viable form than others such as pop, techno, or Hip Hop. Rockists are suspicious of electronic instruments such as keyboards, turntables, or synthesizers favoring more traditonal "organic" sounds. Rockism has been criticized as racist, sexist, and homophobic, and of privelaging straight white males. Some counter this assertion by naming selected gay, black and female artist in the rockist pantheon. As it is a critical term, most people who subscribe to rockist views of popular music do not label themselves as rockist. A young boy on a school bus in the nineties expresses rockist sentiment when he discounts Trent Reznor's music as being "made with computers" and thus invalid. The sentiment is echoed more recently when an older man with experience in audio engineering makes light of a college-age boy's dreams of producing Hip Hop beats, after all, he says, "anyone can do that".

(I used wikipedia a little)

3) I'm not a big fan of Cat Power but

4) Sometime in Spring 2004, I discovered Robert Christgau's website and criticism. Besides issues of Rolling Stone, this was my first exposure to serious music criticism. I came to enjoy looking up artists in his searchable database and through his writing was introduced to many artists I would have never otherwise been exposed to. Later, reading the Village Voice Pazz and Jop polls and occasionally Rolling Stone and less frequently Pitchfork I became aware of artists that were highly regarded and critically acclaimed. It was through one of these forms of media I became familar with who Sufjan Stevens was, his goal of creating an album for every state and widespread praise of his music. However, when it came time to spenmmd my money on albums he slipped my mind. I instead bought Le Tigre, Bikini Kill, Ghostface, or any number of other albums, mainly Hip Hop. One day, a friend of mine told me I needed to hear this band, said they were weird, but I might like them. He gave me a Deerhoof CD (I believe the Milkman one?) and I immediately liked it. Later, I came to like it even more...the ghostly singing, the cheerful nonsense and arty excitment. They sound almost like Le Tigre, put through a blender and translated into a foreign language.

I have since then only heard two Sufjan Stevens songs and liked them some but were not grabbed by them (maybe I'm not rockist enough but I probably just need to get one of his albums and really listen).

"Or should I just buy them, and I'm a jerk for trying to steal them?"

yes, and yes.

and the trojan packet doesn't look anything like optima (as ppl say). if it's 'close enough' so will dozens of the free fonts that there are out there, and for cheap work they will do you.

(i'm a little pissed off, because a 'free' font is causing me such bastard trouble at work right now.)

mitya, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 05:07 (eighteen years ago)

karl and chan are best friends. I read all about that in the new yorker profile of lagerfeld. He flies her to distant locales so she can come to his parties. He has dozens of iPods scattered around his house so he can always put one on no matter what room he is in. He is crazy. Or awesome.

no, not really, Zapf can do no wrong, but I do think it's overused. If my shampoo bottle uses the font, it's time to move on, IMO.

Good point re Designers Rep, hadn't thought of that.

Helsingfurt might indeed suit my purpose - any idea how to get it? I've never downloaded/installed a font before!
