WTF, did that not show up?

Jordan, Thursday, 26 April 2007 18:41 (eighteen years ago)

My theory is is that all of the ingredients are alterable or substitutable

For example (not necessarily all substitutions work in the same drink)

Vodka - Gin
Tomato Juice - Gazpacho
Sherry - Sake
Celery - Lovage
Chilli Sauce - Lime Pickles
Horseradish - Wasabi
Worcestershire sauce - Gentleman's relish, anchovy ketchup, brown sauce, tamarind paste

Just about the only thing that doesn't work in substitution is celery salt.

Brown sauce?

Abbott, Thursday, 26 April 2007 19:08 (eighteen years ago)

Do not knock it until you try it.

Drinkin Island is inside each of us my son, Thursday, 26 April 2007 19:09 (eighteen years ago)

Brown sauce is love.

ENBB, Thursday, 26 April 2007 19:10 (eighteen years ago)

What is it? it's name is intriguingly vague.

Abbott, Thursday, 26 April 2007 19:10 (eighteen years ago)

somewhere between a worcester sauce and a thicker less vinegary form of A1 steak sauce.

Drinkin Island is inside each of us my son, Thursday, 26 April 2007 19:11 (eighteen years ago)

BROWN!

I was thinking 'brown gravy'

Abbott, Thursday, 26 April 2007 19:11 (eighteen years ago)

is it available in the U.S.?

I know none of the following are available in my area:
Gentleman's relish, anchovy ketchup, lovage, lime pickles, and possibly brown sauce.

Abbott, Thursday, 26 April 2007 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, the thicker less vinegary A1 description is similar to what I've used in the past to describe it. Abbott - it's a British condiment. They put it on tons of things and it's damn good. I can get it here in Boston but only in the "UK" section of the International aisle at the supermarkets.

chicken wings in a bloody mary yes or no

Jordan, Thursday, 26 April 2007 19:14 (eighteen years ago)

Now what differentiates the gentleman's relish from its populist counterpart?

Abbott, Thursday, 26 April 2007 19:14 (eighteen years ago)

Fish - according to Wikipedia. Who knew?!

I give up.

ENBB, Thursday, 26 April 2007 19:16 (eighteen years ago)

Not just any fish. Anchovies.

Drinkin Island is inside each of us my son, Thursday, 26 April 2007 19:28 (eighteen years ago)

i've had one with bits of ground shrimp

not so good

gff, Thursday, 26 April 2007 19:48 (eighteen years ago)

Blargh, "gentleman's relish" sounds like slang for chunky splooges.

nickalicious, Thursday, 26 April 2007 19:53 (eighteen years ago)

chicken wings in a bloody mary yes or no

HERO

strongohulkington, Thursday, 26 April 2007 19:55 (eighteen years ago)

Are there any other regional sauces that would work. A goot chutney could be acceptable.

Drinkin Island is inside each of us my son, Thursday, 26 April 2007 22:32 (eighteen years ago)

NOT MOLE.

Abbott, Thursday, 26 April 2007 22:34 (eighteen years ago)

why the hell not? It has chillis, it has spice, it has a little sweetness.

Drinkin Island is inside each of us my son, Thursday, 26 April 2007 22:35 (eighteen years ago)

It sort of tastes like peanut butter, which is like father/son/holy ghost to me, but not in a bloody mary goddammit. Maybe if you were to call it the 'la llorona' to describe its roots & the end result of you drinking it.

Abbott, Thursday, 26 April 2007 22:38 (eighteen years ago)

i still have no idea what a "sport pepper" is

strongohulkington, Thursday, 26 April 2007 22:48 (eighteen years ago)

also known as a greek pepper

kenan, Thursday, 26 April 2007 22:49 (eighteen years ago)

It is a chicagoan pickled chilli for eating with viennas.

I've never understood the appeal of brown sauce.

the next grozart, Friday, 27 April 2007 09:56 (eighteen years ago)

No ale, no brown sauce; did you have your sense of taste removed?

Drinkin Island is inside each of us my son, Friday, 27 April 2007 10:06 (eighteen years ago)

oh my god if i knew "sport pepper" meant pepperoncini i would've been all over this thread earlier.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Friday, 27 April 2007 14:36 (eighteen years ago)

Drinkin Island - do you live in a perpetual early 80s working men's club or sammink?

the next grozart, Friday, 27 April 2007 14:38 (eighteen years ago)

Then again I know people who don't like vinegar because it smells of "poor people" so what do I know?

the next grozart, Friday, 27 April 2007 14:38 (eighteen years ago)

I am wherever booze and good times can be had, inside the hearts of everyone, even you, grozart.

Ed, Friday, 27 April 2007 14:42 (eighteen years ago)

Should be easy enough to manufacture. Mr white are they a salt or a vinegar cure, or a mixture of both? HOw are the spiced?

Ed, Friday, 27 April 2007 14:44 (eighteen years ago)

Jordan, Friday, 27 April 2007 14:46 (eighteen years ago)

It's vinegar and not too spiced, Ed.

These are the BEST garnish for a martini:
