Year of the Dog

This has to be one of the biggest film surprises I've had in a long time. What starts as another "ha, lets all snicker at the boring suburbanites" comedy turns into a deeply psychological, moral and philosophical film with very complex characters. And even though it's not surprising to see John C. Riley or Peter Sarsgaard or even Laura Dern bring depth to the screen, I was quite blown away by Molly Shannon. I mean I know it's the era of the one-joke comic actor going *serious*, but I don't think I've ever seen a more dramatic transformation.

Plus the whole thing has me thinking seriously about vegetarianism again.

Guess I'm on my own on this one, huh?

I uh, I thought this was a chinese astrology thread. Sorry.

Ha. I should have labeled it "film thread" or something. Can mods do that?

I was hoping for a slightly cataclysmic drinking thread.

This sounds good! Thank you for informing me of its existence.

I have "Year of the Cat" stuck in my head now.

six months pass...

Now I am a huge Molly Shannon fan, but this is one of the worst films I have ever seen. Great performances, but absurdly and incessantly bleak. Has a couple moments - ok, just one moment, when the Sarsgaard character is talking about a German Shepherd sypathetically and says "just look at his eyes" and the dogs eyes are CRAZY - but ultimately, this movie was absolutely ridiculous.

I'm trying to remember. Molly Shannon was excellent, as was Peter Sarsgaard, who is a great screen presence. I think I liked it being about a childless, single woman of a certain age, because cinema tends to shy away from having them as lead characters, even as it's having great fun with their male counterparts. I think I also liked something else about it, perhaps the way it showed how people can find all sorts of ways to give focus to their lives. The writer-director is a vegan himself, I believe (and wrote The School of Rock!)

Is this as depressing as the Plague Dogs? (or comparably depressing, I do not think there is a more depressing movie than The Plague Dogs.)

(Also, once again "Year of the Cat" is stuck in my head.)

did anyone see the Bobcat Goldthwaite movie about a woman who admits to her fiance that she had sexual congress with a pooch?

I hated this movie and I thought Molly Shannon was awful in it.
