Temple of Doom was a prequel, yes? I can't think of a 100% bonafide prequel that came before that one. But I'm sure there is one.

someone else is doing the hobbit prequel

The Hobbit isn't a prequel, unless you're just talking about the upcoming film.

I think there's a difference between a prequel that simply features the same character in an earlier point in history (like Temple of Doom) and a prequel that has a direct connection to the events of the original story (like the Star Wars prequels).

i'll bet there was a prequel made before 1930.

butch and sundance: the early years.

Acordding to imdb, the first prequel in film was "The Nightcomers" (1972)[2] based on the book by Henry James prequeling all the previously made movies based on his novel The Turn of the Screw.

-Wikipedia

The article also claims that the word 'prequel' was made up for the press pack of Godfather II.

Does Young Frankenstein count? I'd assume that it would have to, by any measure.

Deric W. Haircare, Sunday, 29 April 2007 17:02 (eighteen years ago)

It's either "Man Getting a Bucket to Wash His Horse With" or "Packing For a Voyage to the Moon."

s1ocki, Sunday, 29 April 2007 17:34 (eighteen years ago)

(obv ignoring the fact that it's hardly... uh... "canon")

"Workers A Few Minutes Before Leaving Factory, Working."

Sorry, s1ocki. I forgot the <sarcasm> tags.

Deric W. Haircare, Sunday, 29 April 2007 18:49 (eighteen years ago)

i think the hobbit film would count as a prequel even though the book came first...

train arrives at station ("it'll scare the shit out of you") was followed by "train leaves the last station" and was sold as the flashback bit that explains the front story of the first.

i don't know what proportion of the first 15 years of cinema/the projected moving image is even documented. hard to make big claims about it.
