Well - I mucked that up...

Ned Trifle II, Monday, 30 April 2007 22:42 (eighteen years ago)

Can anyone fix it?

Ned Trifle II, Monday, 30 April 2007 22:42 (eighteen years ago)

I've always wanted to play in a band called "Ms. Slocombe's Pussy."

leavethecapital, Monday, 30 April 2007 22:53 (eighteen years ago)

You missed out the one he did with Mollie Sugden in a spaceship, whatever that was called.

Come Back Mrs Noah

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 07:19 (eighteen years ago)

Just looked on the bbc page for Come Back Mrs Noah and saw that Donald Hewlett played a character called Carstairs - Croft later recycled the name for one of the British airmen in 'Allo 'Allo! I wonder if this was accidental or deliberate?

Croft is obv v popular w/ the public but could you argue that he is even more popular with many British comic actors for bankrolling their careers for so long?

Was it all downhill from Dad's Army?

T'was a big hill... But, yes.

Mark G, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 08:50 (eighteen years ago)

I'm afraid I found Dad's Army dreadfully unfunny, despite being brilliantly constructed and performed, and split my sides laughing at It Ain't Half Hot Mum.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 08:51 (eighteen years ago)

There was always one character, the young lad novate, in each of these, until Allo onwards....

Something about the scriptwriter writing himself in? (a younger version, obv)

Mark G, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 08:51 (eighteen years ago)

They always started brilliantly, but gained so many 'catchphrases' that by the end there was no space for the story after they'd included all the 200 catchphrases every episode!

Mark G, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 08:52 (eighteen years ago)

Don't know that there was one in It Ain't Half Hot Mum, unless you count Gloria Sahib, but Melvyn Hayes was pushing sixty even then.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 09:02 (eighteen years ago)

"Shoulders back, boy! Show 'em off..."

How soon they forget...

Mark G, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 09:03 (eighteen years ago)

Lofty wasn't exactly a spring chicken either.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 09:04 (eighteen years ago)

dads army is the greatest if not perhaps the funniest british sitcom... ever.

acrobat, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 09:10 (eighteen years ago)

Jimmy Perry obv. the talented one in the partnership

... Jimmy Perry was in the Home Guard!

Tom D., Tuesday, 1 May 2007 09:16 (eighteen years ago)

Dad's Army isn't funny, though. It's like watching a Japanese troupe immaculately perfoming a sitcom - technically faultless but provoking no reaction whatsoever (see also The Two Ronnies).

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 09:17 (eighteen years ago)

Each to his own, Marcello

Tom D., Tuesday, 1 May 2007 09:18 (eighteen years ago)

Now, The Vital Spark - that was funny.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 09:19 (eighteen years ago)

Och aye! John Grieve = genius

Tom D., Tuesday, 1 May 2007 09:20 (eighteen years ago)

clive dunn falling in a pond. there is little better in the history of western art.

acrobat, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 09:37 (eighteen years ago)

Except for Alex McAvoy falling in a pond.

We're dooooooooooooomed, doooooooooooomed, I tell ye!

Tom D., Tuesday, 1 May 2007 09:57 (eighteen years ago)

Now Pte. Fraser going on about the Auld Empty Barn was funny, I'll give you that (tagline: "There wis nothin' in it").

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 10:08 (eighteen years ago)

Particularly Mainwearing's response to Wilson, afterwards.

Mark G, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 10:24 (eighteen years ago)

Arthur Lowe's glasses going all wonky always makes me chuckle

Tom D., Tuesday, 1 May 2007 10:27 (eighteen years ago)

I think Arthur Lowe is funny just standing there.

I was watching the episode where they have to hold on to a captured u-boat crew and it was hilarious. Esp. the German complaining that he didn't want any soggy chips and Wilson writing it down.

Sorry I had completely forgotten about Come back Mrs Noah for some reason (probably because it was rubbish?).

Wasn't "Lovely boy" a catchphrase from IAHHM?

Ned Trifle II, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 12:51 (eighteen years ago)

Yes.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 12:54 (eighteen years ago)

... yes, Windsor Davies was actually funny in IAHHM, unbelievable as that may seem

Tom D., Tuesday, 1 May 2007 12:55 (eighteen years ago)

oops, xpost

Tom D., Tuesday, 1 May 2007 12:55 (eighteen years ago)

Marcello's vote get's IAHHM second place!

Ned Trifle II, Saturday, 5 May 2007 19:04 (eighteen years ago)

Terrible turn-out though.
