I used to hate popcorn, but recently, I've found it to be quite wonderful during late night films. Right now, I have Act II's "Movie Theatre Style" in my closet, but I haven't opened it.

OTM about homestyle.

However second place is CLEARLY Orville Redenbacher Pour-Over Movie Theater Butter.

Best popcorn = put kernels in brown paper lunch bag, pop in microwave, add butter/olive oil/seasoning/yeast/hot sauce/whatever does it for you.

Jordan, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 20:56 (seventeen years ago) link

but seriously this makes the best popcorn that I or anyone I have shared some with has ever had outside of Regal Cinemas.

SNACK EXECUTIVE #1: We've got a great new product that's easy to make, low in sodium, and contains no sugar. It's also something we can price low.

SNACK EXECUTIVE #2: Sounds great! Any downsides?

SNACK EXECUTIVE #1: Well, it seems have an effect of causing an entire department floor smell like urine.

[silence]

SNACK EXECUTIVE #2: Aw, the hell with it, Peterson! Let's run with it!

you must have access to some tasty smelling urine.

i'm told microwave popcorn causes cancer in lab rats.

we have a whirlypop and it's awesome

akm, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 21:18 (seventeen years ago) link

btw the key to homestyle is to undercook it. you wont believe the buttery goodness

My mang always picks the EXTREME BUTTER one of whatever brand has the most grams of fat per serving!

Jolly Time Mallow Magic rocks - it's microwave popcorn with marshmallow butter. I tear that stuff up!

Moodles, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 01:37 (seventeen years ago) link

I love microwave popcorn WAY too much. We dont have the brands you guys do, I usually just get plain and add my own flavour cause the fake butter powder stuff is tasty but GOD IT SMELLS RANCID.

Popcorn: best hangover food ever.

Trayce, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 01:40 (seventeen years ago) link

Kettle corn is so disgusting, they took perfectly good popcorn and poured sugar over it. Other than that I like anything really, I add my own butter if it's too dry (and I'm also a fan of stove-popped popcorn with way more oil than necessary).

I like to make my own caramelcorn. I have a complicated recipe & a lazy recipe of 1/2 c butter, 1/2 c. corn syrup & 1 c crown sugar. I taught this to a FRIEND in high school, and after that whenever she got stoned she made an entire pot and ate it with a spoon. I am surprised she still has teeth.

Abbott, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 02:43 (seventeen years ago) link

How much popcorn does that cover, Abbott?

lindseykai, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 03:38 (seventeen years ago) link

kettle corn yes. i forgot about that stuff.

how do you 'add butter'? doesnt that just make it really soggy & gross?

i want to die. i think this may be because all ive consumed over the past 48 hrs has been whiskey, soda, quarter pounders, cheetos, & microwavable popcorn. i am not exaggerating, unless you count a few drinks of my tapwater, which tastes exactly like sewage.

deeznuts, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 03:39 (seventeen years ago) link

zesty butter popcorn. i don't know if they make it anymore, but a few years ago, it was all i ate, popcorn-wise. also, day-old microwaved popcorn is really the best. pop some, have it sit for a day, and then eat it.

nataschakristin, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 04:05 (seventeen years ago) link

if you're eating some popcorn and you don't throw a couple kernels up into the air and catch it in your mouth, you're an idiot who's missing out on life as it was intended to be lived

iiiijjjj, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 04:07 (seventeen years ago) link

OTM re: the day-old popcorn

peter james, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 04:08 (seventeen years ago) link

We'd always pop 1/2 cup of popcorn in an air popper to make it carmelcorn, linds, I'm sure stovetop or equiv would work too.

I hate in popcorn-stuff recipes when they measures the popcorn in QUARTS. How the fuck? huh?

I'm all about the POPPYCOCK as far a non-micro popcorn snacks.

Abbott, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 05:11 (seventeen years ago) link

I mean 1/2 cup of popcorn kernels. To make the caramel, boil it until it's thick as you want & not so hot it burns. And don't eat a whole pot everytime you take a hit or two, YMMV.

Abbott, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 05:12 (seventeen years ago) link

abbott i truly hate to say this but i think you may have chosen yr mang wisely (i used the same method to discover XTREME BUTTER in the first place)

deeznuts, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 11:41 (seventeen years ago) link

one year passes...

we've been popping it in brown paper bags in the microwave. you know, loose kernels. it's good but sometimes i need the bagged stuff

Surmounter, Saturday, 20 September 2008 04:40 (sixteen years ago) link

advantage of brown baggin: black pepper and garlic powder. so good.

I only eat popcorn at home, where I have access to a kitchen. I make popcorn the old-fashioned way, by pouring a bit of oil into a pot, dropping in a few kernals and putting the lid on, heating the pot on the stove until those test-kernals pop, then adding the remainder of the popcorn and agitating the pot vigorously until the popping ceases.

From the moment I decide to have some popcorn, to the time I am pouring the popped corn into a bowl usually takes me about 5 minutes. 5 minutes, people. 5 minutes!

This method makes delicious popcorn that is only about 10 times cheaper than buying microwave popcorn. I can use real butter, if I am so inclined, instead of that wretched chemical concoction the corporations put into microwave popcorn.

Just so you know. Carry on.

Aimless, Saturday, 20 September 2008 16:49 (sixteen years ago) link

brown bagging in the microwave is just as cheap. basically, buying kernels is cheap.

the problem with popcorn on the stove, even though it's absolutely delicious, is it stinks up the house like oil.

Surmounter, Saturday, 20 September 2008 16:58 (sixteen years ago) link

stove popped tastes best
