For Newhart and Mork and Mindy alone, a god. And somehow I missed he ended up marrying Suzanne Pleshette!

Shame. Very funny guy.

Love the quote from the story about the characters he most often played:

"These guys are about a half-step behind life's parade," Poston commented in a 1983 interview. "The ink on their instruction sheets is beginning to fade. But they can function and cope and don't realize they are driving people up the walls.

"In ways I don't like to admit, I'm a goof-up myself," Poston continued. "It's an essential part of my character. When these guys screw up it reminds me of my own incompetence with the small frustrations of life."

Aw. I'm genuinely sad - what a lovely man. My friend just posted this on his blog and I just liked it:

Back about 10 years ago I got on this kick of writing fan letters to celebs and asking for autographed pictures in return. One of my favorites was Tom Poston - he sent [a] photo and he wrote a note that said something like: "Dear M--now you have my picture, but I don't have yours--is that fair? How 'bout a picture to hang up on the old dressing room wall?"

So I sent back a picture of myself. I later read that Tom Poston had rooms in his house, full of photos sent by fans.

Tom Poston, you had many good years in situation comedies and I hope they led you to a voluntary and healthy retirement. Kampei.

Eazy, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 03:30 (seventeen years ago) link

The clips of him on the old Steve Allen show are amazing. I have no memory of him being on Mork and Mindy. However, re the first Newhart show: "The Peeper is here to see the Mooner."

Also, this is the second To Tell the Truth regular to go in 2 weeks, so Orson Bean had better watch the fuck out.

RIP, Mr. Poston.

Capitaine Jay Vee, Monday, 7 May 2007 06:09 (seventeen years ago) link

from his NYT obit:

In 1959, starring on Broadway in "Golden Fleecing," Mr. Poston met Ms. Pleshette. The two began a romance, though they later married others.

...Before she married Mr. Poston [in 2001], Ms. Pleshette laid down one ironclad condition: she wanted "a big rock," she said in a telephone interview yesterday.

So Mr. Poston gave her exactly that. A piece of unpolished granite the size of a large marble, it was culled from the gravel in his driveway. He had it put in a platinum setting.

The rock worked like a charm, Ms. Pleshette said. She added: "Of course, he later was taught the pleasures of diamonds."

two years pass...

Dave Kehr on the new DVD box of William Castle films:

I didn’t have the space to get into this in the (Times), but what impressed me most about the Castle collection were his two comedies starring Tom Poston, “Zotz!” (1962) and “The Old Dark House” (1963). Castle’s gregarious personality finds a more natural expression in these pictures than in his straight horror films, and Poston turns out to be a genuinely gifted light comedian — too nice a guy for the early 1960s, but someone who might have been a star in the 20s or 30s in the mold of a Harold Lloyd or Stu Erwin.

Man I want to see those. Well at least I know where I can find 'em!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 20 October 2009 03:01 (fifteen years ago) link

Oh, wow, that collection. I had no idea that was coming out. I just bought The Tingler maybe two days ago, but I'm all over that box set. I full-on love about half of those movies (the half that I've seen).

I've seen the trailer for Zotz! before and, although it looked distinctly un-Casle-esque, it looked highly amusing. And stood out as the only movie where I'd ever seen Poston in the lead.

I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 20 October 2009 03:27 (fifteen years ago) link

I've seen that Castle movie in a theater where they actually ran a skeleton on a clothesline through the room.
