Movies in which movies are made about the characters in the movie.

Watching that recent episode of "The Sopranos" where there's a character obviously based on Tony Soprano in Christopher's Cleaver movie... It made me think about how though it might not be a jumping-the-shark event, this sort of plot device is always an indication of an impending ending. What other examples of this happening can you think of?

Pee Wee's Big Adventure - Pee Wee is played by James Brolin while Pee Wee himself gets a cameo as a hotel employee.
Paging Mr. Herman. Paging Mr. Herman. You Have a Telephone Call, Mr. Herman.

"Seinfeld" - Didn't happen at the end, but it did contain plenty of meta shots of characters interacting with characters based on themselves. If only Larry David had been in the scene with Costanza and the guy playing him.

Get Shorty - Best Farina/Keitel segueway ever.

Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back - Whatever.

Bonus points goes out to any scene featuring the original character mouthing the lines being spoken by the "based-on" character. Like you, Woody Alvie Singer...

I think at the end, yeah. I think The King of Comedy too (is his memoir adapted into a movie?)

no, i don't believe so

in the player i think it's just that the movie signals at the end that it is now "a hollywood movie" and/or has been the whole time, not that you actually see the earlier part of the story adapted into something. a non-diagetic adaptation if u will

in fact in the final scene it's the real story you see adapt a movie.

oh lol i did forget about that final pitch! still a special case tho imo for "revealing" that the movie itself is a movie, that you have only been watching the movie all along.

"revealing" that the movie itself is a movie, that you have only been watching the movie all along.

This is a rich tradition in broad comedies (ie not what the thread title specifies): Blazing Saddles, The Patsy by Jerry Lewis, etc.

Godard’s La Chinoise and probably some others I’m forgetting right now.

flappy bird, Sunday, 22 July 2018 03:52 (six years ago) link

I guess La Chinoise was at least partly about a movie being made about the characters, but it felt like some kind of faux documentary, although it doesn't seem clear to me who the characters are even talking to.

Such a strange movie. The most memorable scene to me was the extended discussion about terrorism between Wiazemsky and Jeanson on the train

The sopranos example in the OP reminds me that breaking bad kinda did this with the narcocorrido video. (I could see them doing it for real in the final series of better call saul, with the only allusion to the events of bb being some really cheesy lifetime movie about Heisenberg that jimmy watches on tv in the present day or something)

Centipedes? In this economy? (wins), Sunday, 22 July 2018 10:05 (six years ago) link

There's a difference between a movie in a movie featuring the people in the movie and a movie in a movie featuring representations of people in the movie. The latter being what the OP is.

I mean I keep thinking Get Carter but that's not right.
