― I know, right?, Sunday, 13 July 2008 20:48 (seventeen years ago)
i would very much like to do it myself but 1 i have very little time to enroll in a course and 2 i feel extremely inadequate as photography is very technical (so it seems).
Photography is easy to learn, especially digital photography. Buy yourself a good book, and you can learn the fundamentals in a day. The main obstacle to photography is not its difficulty, but rather its expense. Buying a decent digital SLR kit and accessories will cost dearly.
I love photography. I wish I still did it, but my motivation is just not there anymore. Not sure why.
― Super Cub, Sunday, 13 July 2008 21:03 (seventeen years ago)
I used to do a lot of street photographs and I learned to shoot from the chest. It was pretty subtle.
― Super Cub, Sunday, 13 July 2008 21:09 (seventeen years ago)
I love photographs, but I would never feel the impulse to actually take one. I use photography for my art work sometimes, but those are usually planned, right down to checking sunup or sunset times in advance. Photographing isn't an impulse for me, is what I mean.

Starn twins & Christian Boltanski are two or my faves. Maybe I'll get around to posting some JPEGs sooner or later..
Starns (note: their style was cultivated pre-photoshop, and their work employs actual textures in its exhibited form - i.e. wood, metal etc.)

I always find it odd to have Boltanksi classified as photography, it feels to me much more like sculpture or installation because of the lights and boxes that feature so prominently. I suppose Jeff Wall uses just as much non photography devices, or even Nan Goldin's slideshows as another example, but still....

Incidentally I was gong to post Boltanski stuff in the visual artists thread, but didn't, and starting thinking about this exactly. I once had a high school photography class, even, where he was an option to choose from for a study project. Either way, (and this is especially after a recent trip to a Holocaust museum, which spurred a much deeper appreciation of his work) it's become kind of evident to me that the display is perhaps as important as the image itself, and he really should not be reduced to photography (cf. the way he does the same things with clothes for instance). Just sayin'.
And ugh, Uta Barth's stuff, especially the one's posted above are just gorgeous! One of the people I find beautiful in the sea of bile that is contemporary photography.

Real random one here - a photographer I.D.:I'm trying to think of the name of a guy I was reading about - a sort of outsider photographer maybe along the lines of a Diane Arbus (or maybe more Larry Clark - I think he photographed junkies, etc.).The only thing I remember is that he had three names, and the middle name had the word "meat" in it. Like "Robert Meathook Wilson" or something like that.

Saw this tonight at the documentary festival:
http://everybodystreet.com/image/47750172530
Like so much of what I see/hear these days, someone's attempt to capture something slipping away. The director and Jill Freedman spoke afterwards--if you ever get see it, Freedman is all that she is in the film and more. It wasn't until halfway through that I realized she was sitting right in front of me, beside the director (I was aware of her). At first I thought she was the director's mother, and was wondering how much nerve I'd need to summon to ask the director to ask her mother to stop whispering during the movie.

The Lightbox had Robert Frank's Me and My Brother tonight. Nice scene of Ginsberg walking across a field singing, looking like he could be in the Band. Christopher Walken's in one scene, Roscoe Lee Browne's in a few, and there was a beautiful actress I felt I should have recognized but didn't. In once scene, Ginsberg, Orlovsky, and Corso sit around the kitchen table looking at psychiatric reports on Orlovsky's brother; an old Columbia album drops onto a portable record player, you suspect it's going to be Dylan (he's already been heard once), and sure enough it's "Like a Rolling Stone." But it plays at low volume, and nobody takes any notice of it as Ginsberg reads from the reports. Very strange--it's inconceivable that "Like a Rolling Stone" would be used in a film today and not dwarf everything around it. I found a lot of the film tedious, but it may be something of an extension to Warrendale and Titicut Follies.
