Tuomas, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 13:42 (eighteen years ago)

Whoops, I guess necrophilia doesn't fit in any of those. My apologies for the ILX body-loving massive...

Tuomas, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 13:44 (eighteen years ago)

"furries don't count" - why?

braveclub, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 13:46 (eighteen years ago)

Gore Vidal would love this thread.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 13:50 (eighteen years ago)

I count them as humans, so you should one of the other alternatives. Of course, if you have the hots only of the furry suit and not the person inside, you can click the "non-human" option.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 13:51 (eighteen years ago)

I don't understand the options past Heterosexual. I'm not asexual, I just choose to be celibate. I'm not sure what the sublimation thing is supposed to be about. I guess there isn't an option for me. I'm not beyond categories, my category just isn't up there.

Masonic Boom, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 13:52 (eighteen years ago)

where is "gay, so far"?

Alfred OTM (acts, not persons)

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 13:53 (eighteen years ago)

I used to claim that I chose celibacy and that it didn't choose me. No one believed me oddly enough... Orientation wise? North by Northwest every time baby.

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 13:57 (eighteen years ago)

This wasn't meant to be taken too seriously. Personally I'm sympathetic towards the "acts, not persons" view, and the "beyond categories" option was meant fo people who feel the same way. But that doesn't change the fact that many/most people do feel they have a definite sexual orientation.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 13:59 (eighteen years ago)

Sublimate: v Psychol direct the energy of a strong desire, esp. a sexual one into socially acceptible activities.

Um, although I think I understand, what's so socially unacceptible about sex? It seems to me like it's supposedly *more* socially acceptible to couple up than to choose not to.

Take out that "socially acceptible" bit and it might suit.

Masonic Boom, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 14:01 (eighteen years ago)

Kate, I don't think the term "orientation" necessarily requires any action to be taken. So if you don't feel asexual just click on the option you'd think would be closest to you whether or not you're celibate.

(x-post)

Tuomas, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 14:02 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I think the socially unacceptible bit sounds kinda dated too, but the general idea of sublimation is that your sex-drive is directed towards things that aren't (or aren't generally considered) sexual. I'm not sure if the whole existence of sublimation can even be proven, but it seems like a good way to describe certain behavioual patterns.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 14:05 (eighteen years ago)

the 'acts not persons' thing sort of made sense when people referred to The Gays or The Homosexuals, but otherwise not that much. "there are no vegetarians/britishes/epileptics, just vegetarian/british/epileptic acts".

where is option "tuomasexual"

ghost rider, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 14:11 (eighteen years ago)

i don't think celibacy is not a sexual orientation.

That one guy that quit, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 14:12 (eighteen years ago)

OK, I don't have to answer the poll. Whatever. It's just weird that those two options are provided if you're not going to include celibacy.

Masonic Boom, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

I totally get off on transitioning from a solid state to a gaseous state, rowr.

HI DERE, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 14:22 (eighteen years ago)

Thought vs. action, you could be having sex with everything under the sun and still identify as heterosexual, or homosexual, etc. Asexual implies a lack of sexual motivation, but not necessarily action -- more as a lack of drive.

Like Tuomas said, this is persons, not acts. Celibacy isn't an orientation.

mh, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 14:23 (eighteen years ago)

Celibacy isn't an orientation.

NEITHER IS "SUBLIMATION"!!! WTF?

Masonic Boom, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 14:26 (eighteen years ago)

most people on ILX are heterosexual.

blueski, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 14:31 (eighteen years ago)

still it's massively exciting to see what will finish in fourth place.

blueski, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 14:32 (eighteen years ago)

To be honest, I don't think sexuality is easy to define in any sense. In my opinion, sexuality isn't something you can just freely choose, like vegetarianism (referring to an earlier post), but neither is it something you have absolutely no control over, like epilepsy. If a person can be considered to, say, have chosen a fetish, then choosing celibacy could be considered a sexual orientation as well. As I said, I'm sympathetic towards "acts not persons" approach, but nevertheless sexual acts don't seem to be as free and context-dependent as many others.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 14:33 (eighteen years ago)

BAN LOUIS JAGGER

We can all guess how Dom voted. Miss him, do you? Love hurts...

kv_nol, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 14:36 (eighteen years ago)

How can you talk about "acts not persons" when you don't have an option for "there are no acts"?

x-post HA HA HA HA HA Ha to kv.

Masonic Boom, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 14:36 (eighteen years ago)

I have to say though, I like "I'm beyond categories". It makes one sound like an unruly library book!

probably good we don't usually use language in this way.

In the context of a poll, "beyond categories" is itself a category.

Stone Monkey, Thursday, 3 May 2007 10:23 (eighteen years ago)

I was thinking most "non-human" sexual objects - like boots, panties, or rubber dolls - still seem to be directly connected to humans in one way or another, but I guess the lamp-post man doesn't fit into this theory.

Maybe he wants one of us to fuck him.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 3 May 2007 22:24 (eighteen years ago)

Tuomas? Pretty sure he does, but I'm not giving in.

stevienixed, Thursday, 3 May 2007 22:25 (eighteen years ago)

Russell Ziskey: No, we're not homosexual, but we are *willing to learn*.
John Winger: Yeah, would they send us someplace special?

kenan, Friday, 4 May 2007 00:19 (eighteen years ago)

I'd have expected more shades of grey in your poll, tuomas, although you are asking about orientation rather than sexuality or gender, so I'll let you off.

Ed, Friday, 4 May 2007 05:21 (eighteen years ago)

Ed; Ed; Ed, don't be so shy. Come on. Tell us which shade of grey you are.

nathalie, Friday, 4 May 2007 07:25 (eighteen years ago)

"I'm someone who doesn't define their identity by who they fuck" clearly not one of the options! Tsk tsk!

I'm still confused by what "orientation" means. Like, what direction do you face when you fuck?

East! Towards the rising sun, so I can harness the most orgone energy.

Masonic Boom, Friday, 4 May 2007 09:09 (eighteen years ago)

"I'm someone who doesn't define their identity by who they fuck" clearly not one of the options! Tsk tsk!

Actually, this is exactly what the last option is about. So you can click that if you want to.

Tuomas, Friday, 4 May 2007 10:37 (eighteen years ago)

I think you needed to clarify your options a bit better, because that's not what I thought the last option was about at all.

Masonic Boom, Friday, 4 May 2007 10:38 (eighteen years ago)

And orientation refers to whatever objects your sex drive is directed to.

Tuomas, Friday, 4 May 2007 10:39 (eighteen years ago)

(x-post)

The last option was meant for anyone who doesn't believe in caterogizing or definitive sexual identities, it's deliberately vague.

Tuomas, Friday, 4 May 2007 10:40 (eighteen years ago)

worst thread ever

"You know, I'd question my sexuality if it was Steve Bull doing the asking."

Dom Passantino, Friday, 4 May 2007 12:42 (eighteen years ago)

It was a bloke. He did follow it up with "Not that I think he'd ask. I mean Bully's not like that, is he."

aldo, Friday, 4 May 2007 12:49 (eighteen years ago)

Well, I guess the results aren't that surprising. I would've perhaps expected more bisexuals.

Tuomas, Saturday, 5 May 2007 11:01 (eighteen years ago)

We're a dull crowd, sorry.

Maria, Saturday, 5 May 2007 16:43 (eighteen years ago)
