Fuck off.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 16:44 (eighteen years ago)

You annoy me more than anything else in the world.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 16:44 (eighteen years ago)

And I don't know quite why seeing as how tolerant I am of all other sorts of grammatical mangling.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 16:45 (eighteen years ago)

they annoy you more than, like, coworkers who steal your food out of the communal fridge?! that's a bit extreme.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Wednesday, 2 May 2007 16:45 (eighteen years ago)

Actually they're not as annoying as the 'at least one exclamation mark after every sentance' brigade, but they're within touching distance.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 16:46 (eighteen years ago)

CAN YOU SEND ME AN OINK INVITE + GUESS PAPERS

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 16:46 (eighteen years ago)

I'm very bad with punctuation online. type too fast and do too many other things at the same time. does your brain have a hard time parsing questions with no question mark.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 16:46 (eighteen years ago)

matt sometimes we forget yeah?

That one guy that quit, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 16:47 (eighteen years ago)

what's your problem

jel --, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 16:47 (eighteen years ago)

why do you make such a big deal about no question marks

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 16:47 (eighteen years ago)

is it really that big a deal

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 16:47 (eighteen years ago)

People who don't use commas
People who use commas everywhere
People who don't use semi-colons

That one guy that quit, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 16:47 (eighteen years ago)

It just makes you all look really stupid.

The annoying verbal equivalent is the opposite funnily enough. People who put a rising inflection on the end of every single sentance so it sounds like they're asking a question. Equally dumb.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 16:49 (eighteen years ago)

i know right.

That one guy that quit, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 16:49 (eighteen years ago)

you're really frustrated by this

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 16:49 (eighteen years ago)

WAHT

blueski, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 16:50 (eighteen years ago)

srsly people make mistakes on the internet sometimes.

That one guy that quit, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 16:50 (eighteen years ago)

more than one exclamation mark!! i hate that so much!!!!!

blueski, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 16:50 (eighteen years ago)

amirite

mookieproof, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 16:50 (eighteen years ago)

you know what's worse than people who don't use question marks

people who misspell sentence

Oilyrags, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 16:50 (eighteen years ago)

how old are you

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 16:51 (eighteen years ago)

whither old fart!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That one guy that quit, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 16:51 (eighteen years ago)

It's actually kind of endearing when Old Fart does it.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 16:51 (eighteen years ago)

who is old fart

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 16:52 (eighteen years ago)

Snrub's Dad

fuck off people who say 'tote' JUST TYPE THE EXTRA 3 LETTERS HUH

blueski, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 16:52 (eighteen years ago)

ARGH!

I've just read about some new comedy thing called What About Brian.

WHAT ABOUT A FUCKING QUESTION MARK YOU TWATS?

matt dc OTFM.

9xpost btw three exclamation marks is ok, very occasionally. one is also ok, occasionally. two or four or 17? fuck you)

xpost apart from Old Fart who was teh funney.

CharlieNo4, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 16:52 (eighteen years ago)

Fuck off with that extra e in funny as well.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 16:53 (eighteen years ago)

people whose thread titles are all uppercase for no reason. you disgust me.

blueski, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 16:54 (eighteen years ago)

http://www.lovefilm.com/lovefilm/images/products/1/28631-large.jpg

That one guy that quit, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 16:54 (eighteen years ago)

Actually, I never forget to use a question mark. Or a full stop, or a comma, you can never have too many commas, can you?

There's nothing wrong with too many exclamation marks!!

jel --, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 16:54 (eighteen years ago)

which one of them is you???? (xp)

blueski, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 16:54 (eighteen years ago)

If I don't use one, it's probably on purpose. Different tone in typing than using one.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 16:57 (eighteen years ago)

Matt you spelled "sentence" wrong up there.

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 16:59 (eighteen years ago)

I am worse than Hitler.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 16:59 (eighteen years ago)

If I don't use one, it's probably on purpose. Different tone in typing than using one.

-- call all destroyer, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 16:57 (22 minutes ago)

OTM. also, I will never ever ever ever EVER end a question with a period, because that is just retarded and obviously wrong, whereas dropping the question mark is not so much "wrong" as "incomplete".

bernard snowy, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 17:22 (eighteen years ago)

WTF is this thread on about

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 17:29 (eighteen years ago)

You non question mark-using people will no doubt relieved to learn you've been relegated to third in the 'most annoying things in the world' league. Even the exclamation mark people aren't a fraction as bad as people who use the 'word' 'sooooooooooooo' for emphasis.

I can tolerate everything else, but I think if I was seeing a girl who did that in an email, I might actually have to dump her.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 18:11 (eighteen years ago)

is there a reason why you are soooooooooo uptight

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 18:13 (eighteen years ago)

What about people who go "Two words:" for emphasis before they type the two words? Where do they fit?

Groke, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 18:16 (eighteen years ago)

they're totes awes.

That one guy that quit, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 18:18 (eighteen years ago)

the internet must be infuriating to you people

ghost rider, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 18:21 (eighteen years ago)

"y 5000."

"can we put something in the news page and have him as a featutre VERY IMPORTANT."

"i thought you had one some where. who does."

"can you help."

these are some samples of correspondence from one of my bosses. they're not excerpts; each is the totality of the individual email. his messages generally only include question marks when sent from his blackberry, which for whatever reason randomly inserts them throughout. the way i see it, not using question marks is a control thing. it turns requests into demands, and is a very effective way (in both oral and written form) of reminding you who's in charge...

anhell*ca, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 18:31 (eighteen years ago)

What bothers me alot - in the real world of actual flesh people - is when people, talk like this? they raise the pitch of the voice? at the end of almost every sentence? like every statement is a question?
angers thermo to his fleshy core, it does.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 18:36 (eighteen years ago)

you better not go to australia then

Rob Bolton, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 18:43 (eighteen years ago)

although the youths here in canada do have the similar 'upspeak' i suppose

Rob Bolton, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 18:44 (eighteen years ago)

these are some samples of correspondence from one of my bosses.

Whenever I see people post similar e-mails from bosses, I'm thankful I've always worked in editorial publishing jobs, because I think I would really resent a boss who wrote like that.

jaymc, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 18:50 (eighteen years ago)

Cf. an email exchange w/ a friend the other day:

Friend: 'Got a good idea of a pub where we can meet for lunch'
Me: 'Oh, really? Which one?'
Friend: 'Sorry, that was supposed to be a question'

braveclub, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 19:00 (eighteen years ago)

well okay, but your friend is obviously just bad at it

bernard snowy, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 19:02 (eighteen years ago)

What the fuck, this isn't a term paper. Who cares how other people type, unless you're some kind of smug jerk who gets off on criticizing casual conversation.

dan m, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

It's not like it annoyed me or anything, just a good example of why they're useful.

braveclub, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 19:14 (eighteen years ago)

i don't care enough about the answer to turn my question into something truly questioning

félix pié, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 19:15 (eighteen years ago)

fixed

That one guy that quit, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 19:24 (eighteen years ago)

Matt, does it <I>always</I> bother you or only when it's done in long emails/letters/texts? I mean, what if someone forgets it in a single sentence/post? I don't think I have ever forgotten to add a question mark, so please don't put me in your hate list. ;-)

stevienixed, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 19:25 (eighteen years ago)

Ah fek. CONVERT to BBcode. One day I'll remember to do it. :-(

stevienixed, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 19:25 (eighteen years ago)

I've been to both places and did not notice too much of an increase!

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 19:48 (eighteen years ago)

i'm ron burgundy?

^@^, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 19:52 (eighteen years ago)

ha haha?

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 19:56 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, the Brits do the upspeak too, but that's usually a result of an added word/phrase at the end, i.e. knowhadimean? amirite? yeah?, etc. Aussies are notorious for doing the upspeak as part of any normal sentence...

Rob Bolton, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 20:00 (eighteen years ago)

People who don't use semi-colons

ILX has ripped the semi-colons out of me.

Curt1s Stephens, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 20:00 (eighteen years ago)

i like the ilx internet and its talk

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 20:02 (eighteen years ago)

I used to be a total semicolon abuser. actually I suppose I still am to some extent, but when I was in high school I discovered the colon (no homo) and its awesome related-sentence-joining powers.

bernard snowy, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 20:14 (eighteen years ago)

i think my english teacher said, just prior to my gcses, that "only 14 people" the year before had used the semi-colon. i had a pretty vague grasp of its awesome potential, but started using it then anyway, just on this basis. it was probably total bullshit too!

That one guy that quit, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 20:15 (eighteen years ago)

My freshman English professor took me and another girl aside after class one day and said we should get together b/c we both were having semi-colon trouble. LEAST HELPFUL ADVICE EVAH!

I think I still have trouble with them.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 20:21 (eighteen years ago)

well, i knew a guy who didn't use periods instead, he'd simply separate his sentences with a series of spaces i never really knew what i thought of that if nothing else, i have to admire to energy he used to make all those spaces

peter james, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 20:38 (eighteen years ago)

...i see all my spaces were lost.

peter james, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 20:39 (eighteen years ago)

but you can imagine.

peter james, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 20:39 (eighteen years ago)

i once got a D on an essay for semi-colon misuse (i was 19 and fucking like that) and then i went through and all i did was correct the incorrect incidents and then i got an A

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 20:43 (eighteen years ago)

some of you would flip if you saw how my brother writes emails/internet things. it is artistic and inspired punctuation use and i have come to regard it as beautiful.

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 20:45 (eighteen years ago)

none of these so-called offenses... are worse.... than serial... ellipses abusers

^@^, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 22:28 (eighteen years ago)

rrobyn[[[is your brother,,, single,, for coffee or tea??

^@^, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 22:28 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, the Brits do the upspeak too, but that's usually a result of an added word/phrase at the end, i.e. knowhadimean? amirite? yeah?, etc. Aussies are notorious for doing the upspeak as part of any normal sentence...

i think people in NE England do this too as well - specifically Tyne/Tees types.

blueski, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 22:40 (eighteen years ago)

they start high, drop and then finish as high as before or maybe slightly below that.

blueski, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 22:41 (eighteen years ago)

I don't have a problem with this?

the next grozart, Thursday, 3 May 2007 09:58 (eighteen years ago)

,,my brorrther,,''. check it'' sometimes with a girl sometimes not ]]]youknow'' but like the tttt yeahhs and coffee in the morn;;'''

rrrobyn, Thursday, 3 May 2007 15:13 (eighteen years ago)

(that is srsly a rough approximation of his emails to me)

rrrobyn, Thursday, 3 May 2007 15:14 (eighteen years ago)

Stephen Fry terms it AQI? Stands for Australian Question Intonation?

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 3 May 2007 15:17 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah it's called something like that?

the next grozart, Thursday, 3 May 2007 15:19 (eighteen years ago)

Of course, if you become too obsessed with this sort of thing, you end up like Lynne Truss, who starts her first book by lamenting the abuse of the apostrophe in the English language, and ends her second book demanding a fascist dictatorship to drag Britain out of the mire.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 3 May 2007 15:20 (eighteen years ago)

this is a class thing innit. fascists.

acrobat, Thursday, 3 May 2007 15:25 (eighteen years ago)

wah i had written that before marcello's bit. honest.

acrobat, Thursday, 3 May 2007 15:25 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, the Brits do the upspeak too, but that's usually a result of an added word/phrase at the end, i.e. knowhadimean? amirite? yeah?, etc.

yup, whenever my mates come back from travelling they have this awful upspeak accent. It makes them sound like annoying pricks. Like that girl off American Pie.

Ste, Thursday, 3 May 2007 15:28 (eighteen years ago)

But Canadians sometimes tend to do the statment-as-question upspeak thing too, eh?

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Thursday, 3 May 2007 16:15 (eighteen years ago)

i have put much effort into eliminating the end intonation but still say eh sometimes. once in paris i asked some girls standing in a concert line (where i was also standing) if they were cdn b/c of this question-mark-in-voice but it turned out they were from arizona.

rrrobyn, Thursday, 3 May 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

Frogman Henry, Thursday, 3 May 2007 18:08 (eighteen years ago)

I use semicolons; however, I sometimes think they are slightly arch, camp even.

moley, Thursday, 3 May 2007 21:42 (eighteen years ago)

?Is it a fact I must I admit; sometimes I have problems with my colon:

cli0019, Thursday, 3 May 2007 22:51 (eighteen years ago)

last time i tried camping with a semicolon the tent soaked through, we couldn't find any firewood, and bitch got wasted and wouldn't shut up

rrrobyn, Thursday, 3 May 2007 22:56 (eighteen years ago)

What bothers me alot - in the real world of actual flesh people - is when people, talk like this? they raise the pitch of the voice? at the end of almost every sentence? like every statement is a question?
angers thermo to his fleshy core, it does.

Not only am I totally guilty of this IRL, I've started typing it where I would say it IRL. LEADING to too many Q-marks.

Abbott, Thursday, 3 May 2007 23:11 (eighteen years ago)

luckily there is a thread on that too!

rrrobyn, Thursday, 3 May 2007 23:16 (eighteen years ago)

it is full of important pictographic information

rrrobyn, Thursday, 3 May 2007 23:17 (eighteen years ago)

Lynne Truss got the joke that's the basis of her book wrong: The panda doesn't go to a restaraunt. He goes to a prostitute.

libcrypt, Friday, 4 May 2007 14:31 (eighteen years ago)

Do you know that the intonation in most UK accents actually falls on a wh-question and only rises on a yes/no question?

Or that the high rising terminal is a feature of the Northern Irish accent?

Or that by her own rules, Lynne Truss missed out the hyphen in "zero-tolerance approach"?
