Pro-tools used on a Mac - what can I save sound files as?

After being a life-long user of PC's I have just ordered an iMac 24 for my family. I intend to use it for making music and sound effects, and so am thinking about getting a Pro-Tools LE package, with Mbox 2 pro, for this purpose.

My question is probably very silly, as I am a complete novice when it comes to pooters: on my PC, I have been used to using Cool Edit as editing software. When I have finished a session, I typically mix down the elements and save the "song" as a WAV file to store on my hard disk "in documents". I later convert to an MP3 for sending as an email attachment. This is a system that I've become over-comfortable with.. The iMac world is a bit unknown!

I want to know what does one save a mixed down song as when using an Apple Mac/Pro-tools set up? Can it be saved as a WAV, or do I have to go with an AIFF? If it is only an AIFF, is this easily convertible this to an Mp3?

i'm sure you can save as a .WAV if you so desire. either way, .AIFF is as easily convertible.

Thanks - I have been on ilx before, but that was a long time ago (Greenspun era, I seem to recall)!

It was probably as long ago as when I heard that WAV files do not play on MAC's (not without sophisticated additional technology). So, is that not the case anymore?

eh, i meant mac fold. but hey :)

and these days i think you'd have a harder job finding something that didn't play .wav files on a mac than one that did.
