seems to be a consensus of goodbye wigan you dont deserve to be in the premiership because you dont have any fans and you dont bring anything to the division (because yea the other 14 teams are really challenging right now lol). so in the spirit of kick the small towns out and let the entitled in, who BELONGS in the premiership. my 20

1. liverpool
2. everton
3. man united
4. man city
5. leeds
6. newcastle
7. sunderland
8. arsenal
9. tottenham
10. chelsea
11. west ham
12. aston villa

then its a bit sketchier
13. birmingham
14. nottingham forest
15. charlton
16. coventry
17. southampton
18. portsmouth
19. wolves
20. west brom

ive thrown blackburn out for their low attendances, bolton for their comparatively low attendences when you consider their position in league

i thought about leicester and derby, and i didnt know which sheffield to lose, so i lost them both, perhaps unfairly

reading have made a good case this year, with performances and crowds, but its their first season and it would be ridiculuous to say they 'belong'

middlesboro were the first out the door, ahead of wigan

Charlton yes but neither Sheffield side? Dude, that's madness. Obv the Wolves belong at the top of the list. I'm quite happy with Leeds' current real life position, thanks.

HULL CITY

Frogman Henry, Sunday, 6 May 2007 10:04 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, you can swop Hull for Birmingham, who're never-has-beens and the 3rd biggest club in the city they're named after.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 6 May 2007 10:07 (eighteen years ago)

yes. you are right. birmingham...out! but for one of the sheffields though surely? but....WHICH?

600, Sunday, 6 May 2007 10:09 (eighteen years ago)

Wednesday are probly bigger of the 2.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 6 May 2007 10:11 (eighteen years ago)

Celtic. And Rangers. Ha. Someone had to say it, so it might as well be me.

And I'd put Wednesday in over United, just because I know people who support Wednesday, which makes them bigger in me-world which is all that really matters here, to me.

ailsa, Sunday, 6 May 2007 10:12 (eighteen years ago)

I'd say West Brom for definite, first English side in a foreign tournament and all that.

CONTROVERSY ALERT: Rangers and Celtic. <ducks>

bollocks, xpost

aldo, Sunday, 6 May 2007 10:14 (eighteen years ago)

Does either Bristol club have a claim, do you think?

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 6 May 2007 10:15 (eighteen years ago)

no absolutely not. ridiculous

600, Sunday, 6 May 2007 10:17 (eighteen years ago)

Bigger fanbase than some of those in the list tho.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 6 May 2007 10:18 (eighteen years ago)

are they any more deserving than bradford or huddersfield?

600, Sunday, 6 May 2007 10:19 (eighteen years ago)

or swansea and cardiff!

600, Sunday, 6 May 2007 10:23 (eighteen years ago)

Fair enough. I thought about Cardiff akshully.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 6 May 2007 10:30 (eighteen years ago)

I did at first think Bristol probably deserved a club there, because they do both have pretty big sets of fans, but neither side has ever achieved anything.

Cardiff, it was explained to me, are trying to build a bigger ground because of the mass exodus from Cardiff to Man U every weekend. Like that'll change it.

aldo, Sunday, 6 May 2007 11:54 (eighteen years ago)

of those 4, i'm going for swansea (who had a bigger crowd that promoted that day bristol city yesterday)

600, Sunday, 6 May 2007 11:59 (eighteen years ago)

Average attendances over every season since the end of the second world war:

1 Manchester United 47,673
2 Liverpool 40,719
3 Arsenal 36,669
4 Everton 36,076
5 Tottenham Hotspur 35,866
6 Newcastle United 34,918
7 Manchester City 31,608
8 Chelsea 31,452
9 Aston Villa 30,167
10 Sunderland 29,218
11 Leeds United 28,392
12 Wolverhampton Wanderers 25,499
13 West Ham United 24,709
14 Sheffield Wednesday 24,626
15 Birmingham City 22,479
16 Nottingham Forest 22,386
17 West Bromwich Albion 21,743
18 Middlesbrough 21,713
19 Leicester City 21,559
20 Derby County 20,756

Personally I'd be happy with that, but I think I'd kick out Middlesbrough for being terminally dull and bring in Sheffield United (who just miss the cut in 21st place).

Nasty, Brutish & Short, Sunday, 6 May 2007 15:56 (eighteen years ago)

In accordance with the principle that the words 'belong' and 'deserve' have no place in football, I'm going to go with:

1 Man Utd
2 Chelsea
3 Liverpool
4 Arsenal
5 Everton
6 Bolton
7 Reading
8 Portsmouth
9 Tottenham
10 Blackburn
11 Aston Villa
12 Middlesbro'
13 Newcastle
14 Man City
15 Fulham
16 Sheff Utd
17 West Ham
18 Sunderland
19 Birmingham
20 Wigan for now

Matt DC, Sunday, 6 May 2007 16:09 (eighteen years ago)

600, Sunday, 6 May 2007 16:24 (eighteen years ago)

What? No Watford?

:)

SeekAltRoute, Monday, 7 May 2007 09:45 (eighteen years ago)

Matt DC, you're my hero

The Boyler, Monday, 7 May 2007 13:57 (eighteen years ago)

Interesting (to me only, perhaps) that Everton's post-War attendance average is approx what it's been in the Moyes era; considering that Goodison has run the gamut from 78,000 in the late '40s to 18,000 or so for many league fixtures in the early '80s (and 3,500 for a Simod Cup tie in the second Kendall era). In terms of capacity (currently under 41k) I guess this is the fullest Goodison has ever been (same goes for Anfield, OT, Emirates, etc).

Michael Jones, Monday, 7 May 2007 14:18 (eighteen years ago)

emirates is difficult because "attendance" counts season tickets automatically, but they've had like 5-8% no-shows, in the posh seats especially, i understand.

they seem to squeeze an extra 40 seats on OT every 5 weeks.

clearly Newcastle do not belong in the premiership due to not winning anything ever.

CarsmileSteve, Monday, 7 May 2007 16:58 (eighteen years ago)

Basingstoke!

Will M., Monday, 7 May 2007 17:06 (eighteen years ago)

At least, they WILL be in the Premiership. In my Football Manager game. I AM THAT GOOD :/

Will M., Monday, 7 May 2007 17:07 (eighteen years ago)

what's everyone's beef with Fulham?

river wolf, Monday, 7 May 2007 17:47 (eighteen years ago)

i mean, i only have an interest in them because of the murricans, but still: are they just boring or what?

river wolf, Monday, 7 May 2007 17:47 (eighteen years ago)

Norwich! Let's be avin' yer!

admrl, Monday, 7 May 2007 17:51 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think anyone really has a problem with Fulham - most neutrals had a bit of a soft spot for them until this season. I'd say most people would go "I don't hate them, I'd like them to do well, but they're a bit crap really".

Matt DC, Monday, 7 May 2007 17:52 (eighteen years ago)

Ditto Charlton.

Matt DC, Monday, 7 May 2007 17:52 (eighteen years ago)

Ipswich?

xp I like Fulhham because of their ground, but that's it.

CarsmileSteve, Monday, 7 May 2007 18:05 (eighteen years ago)

Will M, what are your tricks for getting Basingstoke promoted?

Mark C, Monday, 7 May 2007 19:10 (eighteen years ago)

My idea of who is a Premiership team is based entirely on who was in it in 94-95, which is about when my interest (and sticker collection) peaked. so sheffield wednesday and QPR.

Cathy, Monday, 7 May 2007 19:50 (eighteen years ago)

I haven't gotten as far as I bragged yet, Mark, as I'm only one season in, but I am beating up the Conference South with a lot of wily tactics (tight marking on the best players, counter attacking good players, all that stuff) and getting a parent club early. I lucked out and got Southampton, who sent me a bunch of reserve players on loan for no money.

Will M., Monday, 7 May 2007 21:40 (eighteen years ago)

1. Liverpool
2. Manchester United
3. Arsenal
4. Everton
5. Aston Villa
