chandler. carver. queneau. another dude

four corners of a literary square? i saw a description along these lines on the back of a murakami book. what do you think of the raymonds? i've read 3, not the unnamed and forgotten fourth. who would the fourth raymond be?

we're looking for ray (e-enders paraphrase)

His brother, who - as part of the R&D team for Breville in the mid 1970's - invented the Sandwich Toaster as we know it today. Specifically he thought of making them non-stick hence removing the compression of bread setting alight problem by turning them more into sandwich fryers than actual toasters.

and what was even more amazing was that he did all this posthumously

Everybody loves Raymond.

Its a shame about Ray.

Pete, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, a crying shame. Speshly when he got into voodoo. Just ask Gerald.

how about Derek Raymond? I loved one of his Factory novels about archetypal and unnamed grumpy Detective Sergeant who investigates grim crimes in London's unpleasant underbelly. and then I read another one and decided it was over the top nonsense.

I feel sorry for this forgotten Raymond. He sounds like the unfamous Baldwin brother.

I like the brother on Everybody Loves Raymond, he cracks me up.

well, i saw the book again. it was raymond massey, the other raymond. but, anyway, i was hoping people would answer the thing about these being portrayed in this blurb as four corners of some square?

and is it lazy when describing murakami (or for that matter, Auster) as some kind of Chandler/Carver hybrid (w/ extra metaphysics)? not sure about queaneau, and i've never read massey

Do you still wear that biker jacket with Raymond(e) on?

Edna Welthorpe, Mrs, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Isn't Raymond Massey an actor rather an author? Or are there two?

Haven't read Murakami, but I'd say Paul Auster was the very opposite of Raymond Carver, thank christ.

three years pass...
im rereading The Big Sleep at the moment. actually, maybe im reading it for the first time. its a long time since i saw the film anyway.

now, i dont mind seeing fragments of dialogue jumping out, i dont mind them seeming familiar. i dont mind if its for themselves? or for parodies/homages of? i dont even mind that they feel like samples, being heard on their original tracks, for the first time, but what i do mind is....

...its great so far. but then, you knew that

You're right, I did.

Haven't read Murakami, but I'd say Paul Auster was the very opposite of Raymond Carver, thank christ.

Murakami was Carver's Japenese translator, one of Carver's poem's is about a meeting with him and is dedicated to him. I dont see much similarity in their work though.
