As usual Patrick Moore is thinking outside the box.

that's a shame. still i really don't think he can pass judgement on these matters when he wears his trousers OVER his own nipples and with his tie tucked into them.

blueski, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 11:26 (eighteen years ago)

A BBC spokesman described Sir Patrick as being one of TV's best-loved figures and said his "forthright" views were "what we all love about him".

no it's definitely the tie tucked into trousers thing, not the forthright views.

blueski, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 11:27 (eighteen years ago)

"The trouble is the BBC now is run by women and it shows soap operas, cooking, quizzes, kitchen-sink plays. You wouldn't have had that in the golden days."

Ahhh, the golden days...

Ned Trifle II, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 11:28 (eighteen years ago)

LITERALLY golden

blueski, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 11:29 (eighteen years ago)

Uh... what?

Former hero of mine in being revealed as raging sexist shockah. :-(

Masonic Boom, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 11:29 (eighteen years ago)

"He claimed that interesting programmes were screened too late at night, and said he would "rather be dead in a ditch" than appear on Celebrity Big Brother."

i hear in bb8 you don't have to choose

Frogman Henry, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 11:30 (eighteen years ago)

My favourite bit is the pull quote. "I used to watch Doctor Who and Star Trek, but they went PC - making women commanders, that kind of thing. I stopped watching".

The man is a nasty old right-wing shitbag obviously and always has been, but don't we already have separate TV channels for men and women? Like, loads of them?

(xpost - I think he's a racist as well)

Matt DC, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 11:30 (eighteen years ago)

zuh? "kitchen-sink plays" is like the standard-bearer of "the golden days".

Frogman Henry, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 11:31 (eighteen years ago)

Men & Motors

blueski, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 11:32 (eighteen years ago)

Living TV is for gurls.

kv_nol, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 11:33 (eighteen years ago)

zuh? "kitchen-sink plays" is like the standard-bearer of "the golden days".

I thought that but then I thought maybe his golden days are further back, like the 50s? I have no idea what was on tv then though (apart from The Sky at Night, obviously).

Ned Trifle II, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 11:34 (eighteen years ago)

The golden days - when Dr Who sidekicks were librarians..

Ned Trifle II, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 11:37 (eighteen years ago)

i suspect if we had separate channels for men and women i wouldn't watch the men's ones at all. oh, appart from Brainiac, perhaps :-)

CharlieNo4, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 11:40 (eighteen years ago)

I am usually pretty insulted/depressed by anything that bills itself as being specifically for women, either TV or magazines. It seems to be all diets, fashion, New Agey "wellbeing" nonsense, and depressing human interest news items (often with little or no mention of their social/political context).

Patrick Moore is at least in his 80s and a bit of a relic. Michael Buerk said pretty much the same thing two years ago and he's got no excuse.

Cathy, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 12:06 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, why get worked up over some doddery old twerp?

Tom D., Tuesday, 8 May 2007 12:10 (eighteen years ago)

when he goes there will be no-one like him* (old boffins who've spent 40+ years in the midst of a permanent wardrobe malfucntion) left on TV.

*apart from some younger people v knowledgeable about their field but also raving bigots

blueski, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 12:34 (eighteen years ago)

Wait ... does this mean I have to stop watching Top Gear now?

C J, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 12:57 (eighteen years ago)

no it's one of the best shows on TV!

blueski, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 12:57 (eighteen years ago)

Patrick Moore, of course, former leader of the anti-immigrant United Country Party, so it's good to see that some people were fans of him during those days.

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 12:58 (eighteen years ago)

Bravo > Living > Men and Motors

Well, I don't think anyone is really. Frankly I'm surprised his minor pronouncement made it on to the front page of the bbc.

He is a good friend of Brian May.

Ned Trifle II, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 13:06 (eighteen years ago)

He might be a buffoon, but he's right about the BBC being fucking shit.

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 13:09 (eighteen years ago)

why does the supposedly so female-influenced BBC tolerate such sexism from it's employees?

blueski, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 13:11 (eighteen years ago)

Wrong

Ned Trifle II, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 14:11 (eighteen years ago)

he still resents Gamesmaster being cancelled.

Alan, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

The best thing about all of this is the image of P. Moore watching Eastenders and wondering to himself if this is how everyone lives their life

DJ Mencap, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 14:25 (eighteen years ago)

funny how astronomy has survived on BBC One tho pop music has not.

blueski, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 14:27 (eighteen years ago)

also that The Sky At Night on-screen title is still written in CHICAGO (at least it was the last time i noticed it), the third worst font of all time.

blueski, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 14:28 (eighteen years ago)

from a decorative p.o.v. i mean.

blueski, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 14:28 (eighteen years ago)

astrononomy = the quintessence
pop music = the evanescence

Alan, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 14:28 (eighteen years ago)

a show that combines both = ratings 'winner'

blueski, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 14:29 (eighteen years ago)

oh they changed the font recently according to wikipedia. good!

blueski, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 14:30 (eighteen years ago)

x-post

chicago? rly? that was the Mac OS7 menu font?

Alan, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 14:30 (eighteen years ago)

funny how astronomy has survived on BBC One tho pop music has not.

When Patrick Moore goes, astronmoy goes. Haven't seen him play the xylophone in a while.

Tom D., Tuesday, 8 May 2007 14:30 (eighteen years ago)

a show that combines both = ratings 'winner'

If only there could be a show involving a former teen pop star in space. It would clean up!

Matt DC, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 14:31 (eighteen years ago)

yowz. i just google imaged

"the sky at night" patrick moore title

and got p@ul corn3ll's face. wtf.

Alan, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 14:32 (eighteen years ago)

well i found this but the one i remember seeing didn't even look as good as that. i wonder what they used before.

blueski, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 14:35 (eighteen years ago)

i spent a large amount of the 90s bitch-slapping designers who'd used Charcoal in print designs. it was fun while it lasted.

Alan, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 14:37 (eighteen years ago)

a show that combines both = ratings 'winner'

Wasn't Myleene Klass on The Sky at Night at least once, or has wishful thinking got the better of me again?

Stone Monkey, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 15:27 (eighteen years ago)

she's on everything now. inc. Doctor Who (she is The Master).

blueski, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 15:27 (eighteen years ago)

She can be my Mistress if she wants..

Stone Monkey, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 15:32 (eighteen years ago)

that was weak

The Wayward Johnny B, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 15:33 (eighteen years ago)

My favourite bit is the pull quote. "I used to watch Doctor Who and Star Trek, but they went PC - making women commanders, that kind of thing. I stopped watching".

Oh, he robbed this off Dirk Benedict's web page. He spends all his time complaining about the new Battlestar Galactica and how it's all run by women.

accentmonkey, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 15:48 (eighteen years ago)

Lazy comedy, it's what I do.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:12 (eighteen years ago)

Myleene Klass was in The Sky At Night this very weekend! It all seems to be celebrations and clips and stuff on TSAN these days - I'd have thought they'd have waited for him to shuffle off, which can't be far away now.

Mark C, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

his trousers are a black hole slowly absorbing him from the feet up.

blueski, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:28 (eighteen years ago)

He doesn't play the xylophone anymore because of some spinal problem that affects his hands apparently.

Unsurprisingly the old fart has plenty of support on HYS

There are women bosses in every walk of like now. And they are ruining everything. I have worked for men and women bosses and more women get into their jobs for reasons otherthan being good at their jobs. Why else would we need policies of all-women candidates for political parties.

Note also that my posts only pass moderation when I exagerate my case. The sensible ones never get published. A female moderator?
