what about Civilisation the boardgame? I will give you one wheat and a total value of eight.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:31 (eighteen years ago)

A digital poll for a digital age.

Groke, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:32 (eighteen years ago)

Harsh. I voted for IV, on the basis that the one I'm playing now always feels like the best. 'cept for the spin-offs. Civ City doesn't deserve Civ in its title.

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:51 (eighteen years ago)

I only even saw Civ City in the shop yesterday - it didn't look very good.

Groke, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:58 (eighteen years ago)

Civ III i never liked as much.

Civ IV struck me as some next level shit, just out of the sheer presentation.

And it had Leonard Nimoy doing Sputnik.

kingfish, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:58 (eighteen years ago)

I have played The Oregon Trail.

Aimless, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:04 (eighteen years ago)

Haven't gotten to IV yet. Probably never will thanks to WoW ruining all other videogames for me.

HI DERE, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:06 (eighteen years ago)

I only actually bought IV this weekend, and it's been mostly my wife having time to play it so far. It feels a lot more organic than the other games - advances and wonders don't have the kind of step-change impact they used to. Maybe it's just that I don't know yet which the good ones are.

Groke, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:09 (eighteen years ago)

dood srsly don't make me want this, my wife will kill me

HI DERE, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:10 (eighteen years ago)

II!

gff, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:20 (eighteen years ago)

only because i played III and was disappointed that it was basically II only looking WORSE somehow, for all the 3d etc, and the things that were added (borders, diplomacy, resources) were done terribly.

have not played IV and maybe never will, haven't played any of the spin-offs either

gff, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:22 (eighteen years ago)

Europa Universalis really pwns the Civ franchise in so many ways. except it's mindbreakingly difficult and also very boring.

gff, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:24 (eighteen years ago)

I thought this thread was about some Samuel Huntington shit.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:25 (eighteen years ago)

Samuel Huntingdon is stuck at Chieftain level.

Groke, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:28 (eighteen years ago)

Part of the presentation was the music in the game, where the soundtrack would vary by era, from early music thru gregorian chant up thru John Adams minimalism for the modern era(tho I would have preferred some Glass in there). Also, I thought the "Baba Yetu"/swahili opening theme the rising sun over the earth, with the character selection screen where they give a friendly smile and bow to you. I thought it a perfect set-up, like all the castmembers of the play we were about to perform personally introduced themselves to you.

I'm not expressing this as articulately as I'd like, play the game and you'll get what I mean.

kingfish, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:29 (eighteen years ago)

except it's mindbreakingly difficult and also very boring.

that's the thing; the Civ games always have fun designed into it(some pulled this off far better than others), e.g. where Sid Meier was usually a character somewhere in the game, or even the Internet wonder being represented by a little icon of Al Gore.

kingfish, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:31 (eighteen years ago)

I voted II as well. I liked III a lot but while I liked the cultural imperialism stuff I was persuaded that it wasn't terribly realistic. Also it was a sloooooow game and the scenarios for II were grebt, the one with a doughnut shaped Atlantis and various mythical beasts!!

IV seems to be a better done version of III.

I still love the first one, I had my most intense and gruelling military campaign playing that and nothing else has compared for sense of wonder I guess.

I must play this boring Universalis thing!

Groke, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

Oh yeah poll closes on the 11th before I forget.

Groke, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:35 (eighteen years ago)

well the thing that EU got right is a more euro approach to political economy: there is a range of options in centralization and trade and all that, and it's not all win-win, religion is a big deal, etc. like i said i haven't played IV at all, but Civ is really simple-minded about what populations are and do and want, it's all teleological: become america. democracies have no corruption, you say? having a stealth bomber is the end of history? uh, ok

gff, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:38 (eighteen years ago)

i got really annoyed with Civ, because i was obsessed with it at the same time in life when I was learning a lot of world history, and the lists of things that i thought were really compelling in life but impossible and invisible in Civ kept growing: Jewish history, the christianization of europe, the atlantic slave trade, the technological differences between the old and new world, all that. of course, all those things are certifiably Not Fun.

gff, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:42 (eighteen years ago)

^ civ4 has these

Catsupppppppppppppp dude ‫茄蕃‪, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:49 (eighteen years ago)

The Civics options in Civ 4 have gone some way to improving on the old "Democracy trumps everything" schtick, mainly because you can get access to civics when it might well not be in your best interests to implement them. So playing as a centralised economy or a state with limited political freedoms can be a winning strategy. It's still not in-depth enough, but I've come to realise that the Civs trade-off accuracy against broadness of scope, and I'm cool with that.

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 20:00 (eighteen years ago)

I wonder if I'm the sole vote for the original. Maybe it's just nostalgia for the age I was when I played it. But I tend to prefer simpler games with less distracting visual presentations.

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 20:01 (eighteen years ago)

I like the original. Also--CivCity: Rome sucks big time.

adam, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 21:46 (eighteen years ago)

"Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep."

robster, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 13:14 (eighteen years ago)

the problem with 4 is i've barely played it because my computer was so crappy that i had to buy a new video card for it to work AT ALL (the cheshire cat leaderheads were well scary) and then the game would slow down so as to become unplayable by like 1600 (ie when all the fun starts). since i've got my new computer i just haven't rly got round to it, i seem to have other things to do with my time...

CarsmileSteve, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 13:19 (eighteen years ago)

I had graphic fart-outs with 4, too, due to the age of my system. Floating eyeballs and teeth welcoming your presence is an odd addition to the gameplay.

kingfish, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 16:01 (eighteen years ago)

I only ever played Civ1 and Alpha Centauri (which was godwaful). I would say I probably logged more hours playing Civ than any other PC game, so it goes without saying that I am trying desperately to suppress the temptation this thread has aroused concerning Civ4, which sounds like it has everything I ever wanted Civ to do and more. Oh me oh my.

I still get the national theme musics from Civ stuck in my head when I'm studying history.

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 16:26 (eighteen years ago)

Also: Master of Magic.

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 16:28 (eighteen years ago)

i was looking forward to Civ IV the way christians look forward to death, but i got bored of it in a few days, sadly.

ryan, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 16:36 (eighteen years ago)

i am so scared of civ iv

s1ocki, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 16:41 (eighteen years ago)

it's sad when you explicitly desire to spend 23 hours a day obsessively playing a computer game but the game doesn't measure up and you have to actually go back to Plan A (having a life).

ryan, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 16:43 (eighteen years ago)

I have never played any of these games, but I'd like to
