ILX's jaymc I have a super creepy question for you

The other day I was watching Check, Please and it was a pretty good episode because there seemed to be a quiet tension between two of the participants like one was really getting on the other's nerves. At one point Alpana Singh referred to one of them as a "rock star violinist" so I was like "huh I wonder whether I know her band" and googled her name. Her band's name rang a bell but I could not recall where I had heard it. Then later that night I was typing up highlights from my ILX lurking journal for my files and saw that it was also your band!! I apologize for being weird but basically my question is do you know if your bandmate found the wine lady annoying, I promised I would report back to the people I watched the episode with. If your band is not Beastie Boy close or there is some other reason you would not know what your band mate thinks about every person she ever encounters then please feel free to disregard this question.

TIA

A B C, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 22:15 (eighteen years ago)

Check please.

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 22:16 (eighteen years ago)

I heart Alpana Singh

deej, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 22:17 (eighteen years ago)

Hi ABC. Yeah, she totally found the other woman annoying. She was also somewhat horrified by the fact that the older dude kept using the word "Oriental" to refer to various aspects (food, clientele) of the Asian marketplace, but all that stuff was shrewdly edited out.

A bunch of us watched the episode at her apartment the night it originally aired. Good times.

jaymc, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 22:22 (eighteen years ago)

Dang, I could think up some way creepier questions to ask ILX's jaymc.

Casuistry, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 22:24 (eighteen years ago)

Some of which I even know the answers to!

Casuistry, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 22:24 (eighteen years ago)

what is the premise of this show?

I thought Check Please was only for the Bay Area until now. Shows you what I know! (not much)

Oops, that first link was just the Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Check,_Please!

jaymc, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 22:28 (eighteen years ago)

Adam, the show originated in Chicago. The Bay Area one is a spin-off!

jaymc, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 22:28 (eighteen years ago)

I was hoping that would be a link to the ILX stalker journal

Curt1s Stephens, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 22:29 (eighteen years ago)

No, it can't be. Wikipedia has a conservative bias.

xp

admrl, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 22:29 (eighteen years ago)

Do not bother with imitations. Only consult jaymc.xls for your ILX factoid needs.

Casuistry, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 22:29 (eighteen years ago)

haha I wondered for a split second if she was in your band, then thought nah what are the chances, surely there's a bazillion bands with nerdy rock star violinists.

Granny Dainger, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 23:32 (eighteen years ago)

I thought everyone in chicago just ate pizza and sausage.

I miss Check Please (plus I heart Alpana Singh)

Dominique, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 03:42 (eighteen years ago)

I've never eaten pizza or sausage in Chicago. To me, Chicago means Indian and Mexican food. And Tank Noodle.

The one episode of Check Please that I saw was pretty good. I was hungover as fuck on a shitty couch and it was orders of magnitude better than Roadhouse dubbed in Spanish which was my other option at the time.

joygoat, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 03:51 (eighteen years ago)

Sorry guys, Alpana Singh is kind of lame.

jaymc, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 03:59 (eighteen years ago)

haha, do you know her, jaymc? her book looks super-lame.

horseshoe, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 04:02 (eighteen years ago)

Is there anywhere I can watch this episode online? Or do you have it recorded? ANYONE?????????

Jesse, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 04:07 (eighteen years ago)

I have eaten Chicago style pizza one time in Chicago, and aside from that, I have eaten pizza no more than I would elsewhere. Since my first very wonderful visit to Hot Doug's however, I plan on eating sausage much more often! http://hotdougs.com

Jesse, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 04:09 (eighteen years ago)

My most common cuisines in Chicago, in order of frequency, have been

(Seafood) - doesn't count since I work at a really good seafood restaurant.

1. Indian
2. Thai/Chinese
3. Mexican/tacos
4. Middle Eastern
5. Sushi
6. Burgers
7. Wine and ______________ (cheese, charcuterie, more wine)
8-10. Etc.

Jesse, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 04:15 (eighteen years ago)

Tune in for the restaurant recommendations, stay for the class conflict.

Bill in Chicago, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 04:59 (eighteen years ago)

The first two seasons of the show were hosted by Amanda Puck, who is Wolfgang Puck's former sister-in-law.

Talk about grasping for your fifteen minutes.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 05:02 (eighteen years ago)

I thought about doing a Check Please application for Hannah's Bretzel, but I don't think they would go for it. Plus the camera hates me.

Jeff, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 14:38 (eighteen years ago)

i would totally go on check please just to trash everyone else's recommendations, "atmosphere? there's more ambiance in a prison shower" or "i've seen more appetizing things in the sand at the dog park" or whatever. and for my restaurant i'd choose like bacci's or the mcdonalds at chicago and western or whatever.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 14:51 (eighteen years ago)

I want to do Check Please at Lawrence's Fisheries. :>

Jordan, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 14:52 (eighteen years ago)

They should do the Weiner Circle.

Jordan, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 14:52 (eighteen years ago)

http://www.wttw.com/img/local_programs_check_please.jpg

I've seen the dude in the green shirt on the left twice around town. One time was at Cafe Boost, and I stared at him for about 15 minutes, trying to place him, before I realized that he was the one who picked Paprikash. I finally went up to him and said I enjoyed his appearance on the program (he was very ... flamboyant), and he got all flustered and said thank you. A couple years later, I saw him again on the Metra, on the way to the B-52s concert at Ravinia.

jaymc, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 14:59 (eighteen years ago)

And Jordan, they have done Weiner's Circle:

Natalia says it's a great place to go for cheap eats and a good laugh.

Chris says it's yummy, yummy and belly busting.

John says, if you've got a little change in your pocket, then get to The Weiner's Circle.

jaymc, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 15:00 (eighteen years ago)

Horseshoe, no, I don't know Alpana Singh, she just seems kind of lame. She has like zero TV personality (I'm baffled at the way she sing-songs "and this is ... Check Please" every time), and her book looks like some Candice Bushnell bullshit.

jaymc, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

jaymc = wrong about alpana

wrong for america

deej, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

Is there anywhere I can watch this episode online? Or do you have it recorded? ANYONE?????????

Jesse, there are excerpts here.

jaymc, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 15:19 (eighteen years ago)

Beastie Boy close

is this an established rating for bands?

mizzell, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 15:22 (eighteen years ago)

To be fair, I have absolutely no idea what ABC meant by that.

jaymc, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 15:30 (eighteen years ago)

they have done Weiner's Circle:

Wow. Did they go at 2 am?

Jordan, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 15:32 (eighteen years ago)

Los Nopales is right across the street from my sister's place, and she said it's pretty good, but that's all I've ever heard about it. Anything specific you recommend there?

Granny Dainger, Thursday, 10 May 2007 00:46 (eighteen years ago)

Fish tacos! Basically, everything.

Bill in Chicago, Thursday, 10 May 2007 00:49 (eighteen years ago)

!!!
I've been looking for a place that has good fish tacos!
I finally went to Tio Luis after reading about it winning the "best taco" contest in the paper last year. I'm not qualified to say whether they are or not, but holy sweet baby jesus they're good. And I did not know a carot could possibly taste as good as the marinated ones the give you with everything.

Granny Dainger, Thursday, 10 May 2007 00:54 (eighteen years ago)

oh and no, there's not really and carl jrs around here either.

Granny Dainger, Thursday, 10 May 2007 00:55 (eighteen years ago)

Granny Dainger, Thursday, 10 May 2007 00:55 (eighteen years ago)

Lupita's in evanston has awesome fish tacos. They also have tortilla chips made out of flour tortillas which is something I've never seen before.

Bill in Chicago, Thursday, 10 May 2007 01:06 (eighteen years ago)

rw you and your bike possee must be, gee, i dunno.

....go on

river wolf, Thursday, 10 May 2007 01:31 (eighteen years ago)

you realize it's possible that mexican dude was just being an asshole, right? and that he's not at all representative of the average little villager?

i just thought it was hilarious that he thought (or wanted us to believe that he thought) that a bunch of 20something dudes on track bikes (yeah yeah...) = minutemen

river wolf, Thursday, 10 May 2007 01:33 (eighteen years ago)

no, i think it's very possible that he was the asshole, yes. it's just, kind of an amazing story.

hstencil, Thursday, 10 May 2007 03:13 (eighteen years ago)

tortilla chips made out of actual fried flour tortillas are great, but lack that familiar crunch that make chips and salsa eating so enjoyable.

also I havent had Arby's in like 10 years probably; at my last job, whch I l lft 4 days ago, it was like totally verboten to eat Arby's in the office due to the CEO's distaste for it. Seriously, he would confront you if he spied you with a greasy Arby's bag and get all foamy in the mouth (according to local legend). what happened to the days when the oven mitt was arby's mascot?? kind of a WEAK mascot IMHO. i mean isnt' hamburger helper's mascot an oven mitt too??? WHO COMES UP WITH THIS SHIT???

anyway i am drunk bye!!!

homosexual II, Thursday, 10 May 2007 04:00 (eighteen years ago)

I think Alpana Singh is charming on TV and in interviews and she f'n rocks for being the youngest woman in the Court of Master Sommeliers, but the excerpts I've read from her book are kind of annoying in a "dumbing down wine for the ladies" way, which really, she of all people should know better than to do.

Jenny, Thursday, 10 May 2007 04:33 (eighteen years ago)

Jesse and Jeff took me to Frontera Grill for my birthday two years ago and we saw Rick Bayless there and I got stupid excited about it, to the point of like, pointing and squealing every time I saw him. I just think he's so weird!

Jenny, Thursday, 10 May 2007 04:37 (eighteen years ago)

He looks like a werewolf

A B C, Thursday, 10 May 2007 04:43 (eighteen years ago)

Seems like I remember Arby's once employing a BIG HAT as a mascot.

Then again, maybe I'm thinking of Ding Dongs.

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 10 May 2007 04:58 (eighteen years ago)

if i may return to something said upthread can someone at least give me like an animal/vegetable/mineral on Nude Spock, passive observation got me nowhere with this. I assumed he was just a troll but sometimes i get the impression that it may be the name used by a gang of trolls or even ilx term for a certain manner of trolling. man I said troll so many times in this post.

tehresa, Thursday, 10 May 2007 05:24 (eighteen years ago)

Rick Bayless won the James Beard award for Chef of the Year yesterday

It's really almost better than that: Frontera Grill was named Outstanding Restaurant for 2007. And this is Bayless'/Frontera's third Beard award, which is worth noting. It really is just the most blood diamonds Mexican food in the world.

To jaymc: yes, it's all "flavors of mexico," but of course we're both right, it's not exactly what the natives eat. Kinda like how I love (and miss) Tex-Mex, but it ain't really what you can expect to eat south of the border. It's an amalgam. Possibly better.

I just think he's so weird!

Bayless is the least telegenic chef I have ever seen on television, and it's telling I have only seen him on local channels. He is actually Lyle the Effiminate Heterosexual. I think I was most creeped out when he brought his kids on the show with him. HE HAS KIDS? NO FUCKING WAY.

kenan, Thursday, 10 May 2007 05:57 (eighteen years ago)

And btw: if Frontera is the outstanding Beard place of 2007, $18 a plate aint bad, yo. This place is NOT expensive.

kenan, Thursday, 10 May 2007 05:59 (eighteen years ago)

haha like the rick steves of cooking!
xpost

tehresa, Thursday, 10 May 2007 05:59 (eighteen years ago)

Even Rick Steves' name sounds like a gay cocktail party.

kenan, Thursday, 10 May 2007 06:12 (eighteen years ago)

"Rick, I'd like to introduce you to Steve. Steve, meet Steve."

kenan, Thursday, 10 May 2007 06:13 (eighteen years ago)

On his TV show, Bayless comes across as a poor Ethan Hawke impersonator.

I will put money down that Rick Steves likes to party. On his Bavaria episodes, he seems like he's getting totally wasted. Someone told me that his Amsterdam book tells you which "places" to go to.

Bill in Chicago, Thursday, 10 May 2007 12:34 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I didn't say it but Frontera was goooooooooooood. There's a Frontera Fresco on the 7th floor of Macy's on State St. that has pretty tasty tamales, tortas, and a couple other things but I only ever get tamales or tortas. And they are open on Sunday, so the next time you're stuck in the loop on a weekend, there you go.

Jenny, Thursday, 10 May 2007 12:42 (eighteen years ago)

and it's telling I have only seen him on local channels.

I think Mexico: One Plate at a Time is syndicated, no?

jaymc, Thursday, 10 May 2007 13:20 (eighteen years ago)

Like all thread morphs, it's amusing this one has turned to restaurant critique. But to get back to original post, ABC is very creepy. Is anyone else bothered by this? Perhaps ABC is just really nude spock.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 10 May 2007 13:25 (eighteen years ago)

Jenny is right about Frontera Fresco. My favorite tamale has goat cheese, corn, and green pepper.

Rick Bayless won the James Beard award for Chef of the Year yesterday

Nope, that would be Michel Richard of Citronelle in DC.

Steve Shasta, Thursday, 10 May 2007 18:25 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe Michel Richard had to forfeit because he used the N-word in the kitchen?

jaymc, Thursday, 10 May 2007 18:33 (eighteen years ago)

Natto?

kenan, Thursday, 10 May 2007 18:36 (eighteen years ago)

is it true that rick bayless and skip bayless are brothers? i can kind of see it and they're both fucking insane but in completely different ways.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 10 May 2007 18:37 (eighteen years ago)

Absolutely true, Kevin. I boggled when I discovered it as well.

jaymc, Thursday, 10 May 2007 18:37 (eighteen years ago)

chicago kevin, Thursday, 10 May 2007 18:39 (eighteen years ago)

oh sheesh u guys I don't actually want to scare anybody. i just have a good memory for useless shit, no usual inclination to post, and nothing to do at the end of the school year. anyway holy shit @ skip and rick bayless being brothers!! also another good thing to get at Frontera Fresco is the tortilla soup w/added chicken, it's a huge bowl for cheaper than the other entrees. I usually can't resist the goat cheese tamale tho

A B C, Thursday, 10 May 2007 19:08 (eighteen years ago)

"My brother was valedictorian of his class and good at every sport," says Bayless, rolling his eyes, as every younger sibling has at one time or another when discussing his family's first-born.

"He was Mr. Perfect, editor of the school paper . .. big scholarship to Vanderbilt. Meanwhile, I was in the bottom third of my class."

"We were so different growing up," he says, "that it was like we were from different families."

And unlike the garden variety sibling rivalries that mellow and become the stuff of dinner table jokes later in life, this one has continued.

"He lived six blocks from my restaurant," Bayless says of his brother, who left Chicago last summer, "and he ate there one time in three years."

jaymc, Thursday, 10 May 2007 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

(That's from a 2002 Sun-Times profile of Rick.)

jaymc, Thursday, 10 May 2007 19:16 (eighteen years ago)

I get Rick Bayless and Rick Steves back-to-back on my PBS station sometimes for extra awkward non-telegenic white guy action.

high five!
