Taking Sides: Clapham vs Camden

I'm starting to think that Camden isn't all that bad. Whereas I was in Clapham the other weekend and it was even more hellish than I remember. But on the other hand you have the Worlds End to reckon with, and that bloody tube station.

(Taking sides Isengard vs Mordor)

Tom, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My, this forum's a bit London-centric. Being that i'm in another capital city about 300 miles north of London, i'm not really in a position to judge

leigh, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

As long as I am west of both them I am happy. Never been to Clapham. Camden has Mega City Comics and a couple of record shops and that is all. I give Camden 5 out of 10.

j>e>l, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There's at least one more Edinburgh-based regular! Why not start your own thread about that horrible Frankenstein's theme pub?

Tom, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Leigh, being 300 miles away puts you in the ideal position to make an utterly random judgement which is they type prefered around here.

Camden has that nice chippy. But some of my mates live in Clapham so I guess I'll pick there.

Emma, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Of course I sounded very judgementalist there...I have no real opinion of Clapham.

j>e>l, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Clapham is more awful than Camden, so Camden it is.

chris, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

God, I may have taken the piss out of Camden before but what kind of comparison is this? Have you been out on a Saturday night in Clapham? THE HORROR. I'm sure it's just as bad in Richmond and a number of other places, but *give me back my dusty inner city raw London edge* PLEASE.

N., Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I rarely even think about Clapham: I've been there maybe 3 times in 2 years. So in my league ladder of loathesomeness, Camden looms larger. That's because I end up there every few months, generally when some band or other is playing. So I hate Camden more, but because it has a redeeming feature. It's a toughie, for sure.

Tim, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The last time I was out on a Saturday night in Clapham was my mate's birthday party in the Bierodrome. It was RAMMED and I was nominated to go to the bar for everyone else since I got served in lightning quick time thanks to my see through top. I think this proves that the bartenders of Clapham appreciate cleavage and are therefore wise people. (There was also a man who bumped into me, looked down and said 'blimey I wasn't going to come out tonight, I'm glad I did now. Do you speak English?'. I think I may have told this story before).

Emma, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nick, I have been out in Richmond on a Saturday night and I can assure you that it out-Claphams Clapham.

chris, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ace! Me and my Wonderbra have a plan for the weekend now!

Emma, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

camden, duh!

camden may be bad, but its endearingly so, and, you know, deep down, you actually kind of like it really. and its easy to get to.

clapham is just awful awful awful, oh how horrible, i cant even begin to say why. wandsworth is nearly as bad too

gareth, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

a man who bumped into me, looked down and said 'blimey I wasn't going to come out tonight, I'm glad I did now. Do you speak English?'. Was he literally addressing this question to your breasts? Do they?

N., Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

you could in principle divert the thames to run through the cool and leafy camden basin, so the potentially doomable camden is better

mark s, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gareth, how is Camden "easier to get to"?

Tim, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

well, you just get on the 253 or the 29!

gareth, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(In the future it will be easier to get to Camden from my house, as a result of a boat along the Thames)

Tim, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

gareth is a ring wraith so crossing the thames is out

mark s, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Are taxi drivers ring wraiths too?

N., Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nick, men in bars (and in fact pubs) always talk to girls' breasts rather than their faces. I think he was in fact addressing their owner, the was he said it implied he was thinking I was foreign and would not undertand his comments and when he discovered I had indeed understood he looked sheepish and sidled off (insofar as you can sidle in a rammed bar).

Emma, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nick, men in bars (and in fact pubs) always talk to girls' breasts rather than their faces.

I know I know, that's why I said 'literally'. What nationality do you think he assumed you were? I'm puzzled.

N., Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it would explain a lot, n.

Frodo: "Do you go to Mordor?"
Nazgûl: "Haha to Mordor we wil take you!"

mark s, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay Clapham has good charity shops and an ACE party shop where we purchased all our decorations for our GRATE Halloween shindig! I have never been 'out' or 'outed' in Clarm so I cannot talk about that kind of nonsense. I managed to have a miserable time around Clarm North/Stockwell area a few times but luckily I got out of that one pretty soon ha ha. CAMDEN has CAMDEN FISH MARKET = yummy best chips evah and also record shops and the place where I won Vic Godards guitar. Still it has the CURSE OF BEING IN NORTH LONDON but still... better than Clarm.

Sarah, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Clapham is the All Bar One of London areas.

Anna, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Anna just hit the nail on the head, which means that Richmond is the Pitcher and piano.

chris, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

...and Camden is the Water Rats.

Tim, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Surely Camden is The intrepid Fox.

Jonnie, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am afraid, Sarah that the charity shops and party shop are in Clapham Junction which is not proper Clapham. My liking of Clapham is minimal but I choose it over Clapton (I know, different thread) because I once went for a long and disastrous walk which didn't even go to Clapton but went to Dalston, Land of Kings, and it was unpleasant and I associate the two. Clapham has a decent S**n*b*r*'s too. And it's on the bus route. That counts for a lot.

alix, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nick, he obviously believed Pete's rumourmongering and thought I was Syrian.

Emma, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That's the Sa*n*bu*y's with the pretty lights on the outside isn't it?

chris, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If you mean the huge video screen, then yes. I don't really understand why it's there. Same architect, I imagine, as designed Camden S*i*s*u*y'*, seeing as they both look like alien motherships, about to take off and destroy the surrounding area with their powerful propulsion systems. That's why I am afraid to shop there. It can't be much fun for the people living in the houses opposite Clapham *ai*sb*r*'s, to look from their windows only to see the latest fat tongued one's advert, on a loop. At least there's no sound. Which, may I add is what it's like in space, suporting the alien craft theory. Oh yes.

alix, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Architect of both of these is Nicholas Grimshaw, who lives in a lovely pink stucco house in Chalcot Square, like all wealthy architects are meant to.

Clapham is called Nappy Valley by those who find the smug marrieds- pushing-the-three-wheeled-pram thing really annoying. Camden away from market areas is dead nice.

suzy, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Has he done any other things I might have seen? They're not really very nice buildings. I don't blame him for living somewhere nicer.

alix, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't mind the smug marrieds- pushing-the-three-wheeled-pram brigade. It's the smug-singles-pushing-their-I DON'T KNOW WHAT-in-my-face brigade that I can't stand.

N., Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Er. Yes. Does this happen to you a lot? People pushing unidentifiiable objects in your face? Perhaps you are a vending machine?

alix, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nappy Valley is a stupid name. And what does 'stucco' mean, anyway?

Sarah, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Blimey. He did Waterloo station. And Oxford Ice Rink. I knew I knew his name. Actually. That's a lot of buildings. What is he? Some kind of architect?

alix, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Lixi: I've always meant to ask - is your great fear of PENGE something to do with the of S*******y's there? It's well-stocked but the lighting/decor is dreadful. It's like a neglected branch of Jewson.

Michael Jones, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Stucco is that stuff (usually white) that is plastered over posh houses' brickwork. Like stone cladding, but for rich people.

N., Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Urgh, in pink?? That sounds foul. Mike - this is a DECENT board for DECENT people! We don't talk about P3ng3 here!!!

Sarah, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No, Camden = The Devonshire Arms, London's Premier Gothic Venue

RickyT, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What exactly brought you to Clapham the other weekend, Tom?

(deduct 1000 points if you said "the 137").

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

+5839012 if you say the 35.

Sarah, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

...and a big bag of coloured marbles if you say the 417.

Michael Jones, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I bags the marbles then 'cos the 417 stops RIGHT OUTSIDE MY FRONT DOOR!

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Marcello: I shall leave your marbles at 50yd intervals along Leigham Court Road.

Michael Jones, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Going to Camden = going through Mornington Crescent. Thus Camden wins.

(OKOK I have been to Camden/Chalk Farm a fair few times and never knowingly been to Clapham, so a) I am indie scum, point and laugh, and b) I have no idea, really.)

(don't email me at this address i think it's stopped working but i have to leave the house in six minutes so i'm not about to sort another one out now thank you goodbye no i won't be at Fancy A Pint i have to be elsewhere thanksarghrunninglatebye)
