From the Open Society & Its Enemies Dept: Reporters are now officially classifed as "threats" to the U.S. Army

They revised the security guidelines, and just so happened to drop "the media" into a non-trad threat category, along with drug cartels and Al-Qaeda. As some have pointed out, they could use this to go after anybody seen talking to the press or even reporters filing FOAI requests.

What's even more fun is the powerpoint presentation given on this. "Don't Blog on Me" with bald eagle photoshoppery.

Exactly how much is left of the U.S. armed forces that isn't controlled by or stuffed with appointed soviet-style apparatchiks? I mean, it's one thing to have a rough & tumble or even borderline antagonistic relationship with the press, but to officially classify them as a threat to be guarded against is something else. When you have military types shutting down any feedback controls with oversight or whistleblowing, what kind of system are you left with?

At what point in America history will a majority of folks in power actually understand how that whole "well-educated citizenry" bit works & its function in representative democracy?

The US military has increasingly grown into an armed subsidiary of the religious right wing ever since it became "all volunteer." It was much the same way between the two world wars, too, but at that time it was tiny and starved for funding. Now it is the big dawg in the budget and eats all it wants. Danger, Will Robinson! Time to make some fixes.

This is true; Chris Hedges wrote about one of these guys bragging how they had "half the chaplaincy" right now, along with some of the shit that went on at the Air Force Academy(where I almost went)

I imagine part of this to be the sad echoes of Rumsfeld's pathetic tenure, much like we'll be seeing the deleterious effects of Porter Goss et al. in the intelligence sector for years and years to come, since all the smart senior people in both lines of business have spent the last half of a decade bailing the hell out

I like how the US is represented as a destructive force of nature bearing down on a nomad.

That drop shadow gradient word art is damned threatening.
