Deciding to become addicted to something: C/D?

I've been vacillating between starting to drink coffee everyday and continuing to try to power up naturally, and coffee might win. I'm a slow starter and even with exercise, meditation, gingko, blahdiblah I look and feel like a chapped toad until about noon. When I get a good nights sleep rather than my customary 5-6 hours I end up even worse SOMETIMES. I used to think coffee was really bad, brittle bones, liver problems, supports terrorists and all that but whatever, I dunno. Growing tolerance would be an issue but I could probably stop and start again. Someone on the inside want to persuade or dissuade?
Or talk about addicting yourself to something else addictive?
ps. YES TODAY IS A COFFEE DAY! Witness me using up one of my bi-annual threadstartations.

There's nothing that's any more 'natural' about ginkgo than coffee.

"a chapped toad"! I've never heard that before.

i gave up coffee last Feb when I had to get gum surgery. I've done it before for extended periods of time, with getting sick usually being the impetus for quitting. But eventually I always go back.

So my advice is hold out for as long as you can, then when you start back up you'll get that rush just like a caffeine virgin.

How do you know you'll become addicted? I can take or leave coffee, I'm sure I'm not the only one.

why not? i've been a coffee advocate for years. it's pretty widely indicated as an effective defense against colo-rectal cancers, heart disease, liver ailments, diabetes, and poor circulation. the only drawback i'd indicate is that the days when you can't get your daily cuppa are likely to be worse when you've cultivated an addiction.

If coffee seems bad to you for a variety of reason, you could give tea a whirl.

Aimless, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 20:28 (eighteen years ago)

I had never tried tea until I gave up coffee. Tea is great! Coffee is great too!

intuitively speaking, it's a good bet – it makes you feel better, and if you take it with an adequete meal you won't crash, and there aren't any massive psycho f/x besides a general sense of well-being. watch out for caffeine poisoning, tho.

also – maybe you should think about the root cause of the morning tiredness? dehydration is a biggie, and you can easily tell it by the quality of your morning pee. if you're super fragrant or colorful, it's way likely you'll need mas agua.

continuing to try to power up naturally

I keep reading this as a euphemism for wanking

As a former "I Only Drink It Black" coffee addict, might I recommend mate tea? It's got a much more subtle kick to it than coffee, but it gives me the same energy boost.

After a week of nothing but mate a few sips of coffee gave me a massively unpleasant screaming buzz and I haven't gone back since.

Caffeine gave me raging migraines. It was easy to quit.

news i can use! until the next news comes along.

reading something about coffee having long term brain benefits actually started the turnaround (lately i've been too much in tune with the pop science rollercoaster((x is healthy/2x give you brain cancer/3x make you gassy but no big deal type of thing)))

lol wanking. I'm an American, silly! *whistles*

I think the key to health vs. risk is moderation. A cup or two a day, cool. Past that it could be trouble.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 20:38 (eighteen years ago)

yerba mate does me even more than coffee, just don't like the taste. Tea in general is out i think cos I have to make it instead of mooching off my workplace

tremendoid, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 20:38 (eighteen years ago)

yeah xpost when I sit down to have coffee( i generally only do at restaurants) I have 3+ cups or as much as time permits. believe me, this would be addiction. I'll have to just try it for a week, if i'm all edgy and severe coffee can fuck off I guess

'Deciding' to become addicted = DUD. You have to wake up one day find yourself hooked on something. Or find yourself dressing again in the night to fetch cigarettes, or booze, or worse... 'Deciding' it sucks, you just gotta let it happen man!
