In some ways it's a fair point, but the Times also LOOOOVES to talk about relatively priviliged immediately post-college kids as if they're completely representative. The girls mentioned last in this article can afford to pay $800 each for their FIRST real apartment -- I didn't start paying that much until late 2006, and I've been here for eight years. And pushing the limits of Park Slope?? Please.

well, they "know" their readership. the article is silly because it is about the "i'll only live in manhattan" types. but if these people are feeling the squeeze, think about how the blue collar immigrant families must be struggling.

and yeah, it was ever thus, but we're in some "next level shit" now

Oh, the first group profiled are Outward Bound-ers living in Long Island City, so I think they're the other side of the coin from "Manhattan-only" NYU graduates! But on average those OB kids probably have quite low, maybe seasonal income, and may need the flexibility of short-term housing for travel reasons, etc etc so even though their residential standards are prob much more in line with mine/ours/ILX's/etc, they could still have trouble finding housing in the outer boroughs when landlords need paystubs and credit checks and a minimum 1-year lease.
