Mother's Day

This Sunday in the US. (Yes I realize the date varies by country but I could not find a one-purpose-fits-all mother's day thread, so here we are.)

Story on NPR just informed me that it is not a holiday created by greeting card companies (as I'm sure many think.) Rather it was begun by a woman named Anna Jarvis who, copying her mother's political activities during the Civil War, campaigned for a national mother's memorial day. Apparently she became horrified as her creation became increasingly commerical. In fact she was once arrested for staging a protest of this.

So Mother's Day, good intentions gone bad. How will you celebrate?

Ms Misery, Friday, 11 May 2007 14:10 (eighteen years ago)

My cousin's throwing a massive MD brunch. If last year is any indication, there will be a masseuse for the women, and Glenfidditch and pork for the men. Good times!

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 11 May 2007 14:16 (eighteen years ago)

holy crap!

I've just gotten cards and probably will pick up a bird feeder for the MIL.

Ms Misery, Friday, 11 May 2007 14:17 (eighteen years ago)

I've promised mine a phone call on Saturday and I'm picking up her Netflix subscription. Not sure what's up for the MIL.

Jaq, Friday, 11 May 2007 15:22 (eighteen years ago)

This is my SECOND mother's day. I got something from Ophelia. Well, from the crèche, really. Totally useless though; it's for a car (which we don't have). :-)

nathalie, Friday, 11 May 2007 15:30 (eighteen years ago)

What's a creche? I feel like I know but it's not scanning for me here in this context.

I forgot to mention what are you getting for the ILX mothers. Yay!

Ms Misery, Friday, 11 May 2007 15:32 (eighteen years ago)

Creche is a daycare center. (It's apparently more something the British use! Didn't realize this.)

I dunno what I'm getting. Probably a migraine attack. hahah

stevienixed, Friday, 11 May 2007 17:36 (eighteen years ago)

Oh okay. Is it also a word for a crib?

Ms Misery, Friday, 11 May 2007 17:38 (eighteen years ago)

my wife is getting a brunch out (with me and the baby; how relaxing this will be, I dunno) and she has expressed a desire to go see elephants at the zoo, so we are

akm, Friday, 11 May 2007 17:39 (eighteen years ago)

xpost Yep, a nursery. It's a pretty swanky one actually. You can leave your child nights as well and even 24 hours (and more).

kingfish, Friday, 11 May 2007 18:11 (eighteen years ago)

That sounds pretty awesome Nath. I've never heard of such accomdating daycare here.

That cartoon makes me think of my MIL who is making a big lunch this Sunday. On HER day. She can't fathom a. other people cooking for her or b. being taken out to eat. G. says this is because she's not American (German) but I think she's just stubborn.

Ms Misery, Friday, 11 May 2007 18:14 (eighteen years ago)

HAHAHA Kingfish, that's terrible. Man in tie w/stache looks just like my dad, too.

Abbott, Friday, 11 May 2007 18:55 (eighteen years ago)

I made my mom a card w/a drawing of us hugging. I sent it out last Thursday, thinking last Sunday was mom's day & it's get there too late. BUT now it's arrived far too early.

Abbott, Friday, 11 May 2007 18:56 (eighteen years ago)

My mom's getting the latest Tolkien book from me. As she was asking after it some time back this was a bit of a slam-dunk giftwise.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 11 May 2007 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

My mom is getting a netipot and some Neutrogena SPF 300000 sunblock. My grandma is getting a knitted teddy bear.

tokyo rosemary, Friday, 11 May 2007 19:17 (eighteen years ago)

my mom and I don't go in for all that.

teeny, Friday, 11 May 2007 19:22 (eighteen years ago)

netipots or knitting?

Ms Misery, Friday, 11 May 2007 19:23 (eighteen years ago)

I'm making my mom dinner and cleaning her house - probably next weekend. This weekdnd, I'm going to a bbq on Sunday at a friend's house - there will be drinking, swimming and hopefully no one will get arrested this time. It's my first mother's day doing something *I* want to do, so I'm looking forward to it.

luna, Friday, 11 May 2007 19:26 (eighteen years ago)

all that = holidays

teeny, Friday, 11 May 2007 19:27 (eighteen years ago)

i sent off a book yesterday and it will not get there until monday. the UPS guy gave me shit for not wanting to pay for saturday delivery, which was $30 more. he shook his head at me said i was a bad daughter ;_;

bell_labs, Friday, 11 May 2007 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

what a dick!

Ms Misery, Friday, 11 May 2007 19:53 (eighteen years ago)

she's not American (German) but I think she's just stubborn.

Shit, I'm European and don't mind going out!

nathalie, Saturday, 12 May 2007 08:00 (eighteen years ago)

my mom always denounced mother's day as a hallmark holiday one of her pet rants (TM) but she'd relent enough to be taken out to dinner.

the mother of my child, OTOH, enjoys the holiday and expects a certain effort to be extended. so we're going out for a little bsitro meal tonight and I'll make something nice tomorrow. present: a pair of CROCS cause frankly I've done the perfume etc thing to death.

m coleman, Saturday, 12 May 2007 11:04 (eighteen years ago)

Er, I should do something for my mom but it's the day before and way too late to get mail to her. Hmm. Also my dad's birthday is next week. I'm so bad at remembering other people when they're a couple hundred miles away.

Maria, Saturday, 12 May 2007 18:04 (eighteen years ago)

OH SHIT.

John Justen, Saturday, 12 May 2007 18:08 (eighteen years ago)

My kids have gifts that they made for me in school, apparently.

We're supposed to go to my grandmother's house tomorrow, but since my mother passed on a horrible death virus to me, I think we'll stay home. At some point I'm going to wind the ends in to the fancy scarf I knitted for my mother and give it to her.

Sara R-C, Saturday, 12 May 2007 18:15 (eighteen years ago)

i sent my mom flowers through ftd. it's corny, but she likes that sort of thing.

I went on a shopping trip to the PX with my mother-in-law. The best gift she could possibly get.

And I got into a fight with my mother on the phone.

Yay mother's day.

Ms Misery, Monday, 14 May 2007 12:51 (eighteen years ago)

here's the mother's day card my 3yo daughter dictated to me:

help me pick out a mother's day gift for my wife? a few weeks ago she showed me a very nice, antique looking apothecary chest on etsy that she liked. it was way out of my price range but there's a lot of nice apothecary cabinet/chest things online. i think she wants something that's rustic and old looking, but without being gross. i assume she'd use it to store spices + teas. i think this one would be kinda perfect, but it's already been sold:

thought about getting some really cheap jewelry on amazon. 'created emerald' for $30? I'm there!

dayo, Thursday, 10 May 2012 00:04 (thirteen years ago)

when did mother's day become such a big deal??
i thought it was just cards and flowers and a phone call or maybe brunch
everyone seems really concerned about it this year. i blame the economy.

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Friday, 11 May 2012 19:10 (thirteen years ago)

still card + phone for me. Mom is about 80-90 mi away, and it takes me about 4 hours door-to-door each way. I don't time my visits acc to Hallmark, will go up in the next few weeks.

twelve years pass...

I went to my mother's yesterday, as I always do on a Sunday, and got caught in MD traffic. I also don't think it was a coincidence that I got into two separate aggro incidents with guys in luxury German cars. It's not my fault you resent having to take your mother out for lunch once a year, you miserable git.
