life imitates art. i'd always wondered why there was an ice cream truck in my city that would make its rounds at really odd hours (as in, at midnight). then some locals clued me in, and i remembered that the said truck's rounds included driving by some of the city's more notorious street corners.

one of them in my brother's neighorhood sells bootleg movies and shit too

latebloomer, Sunday, 13 May 2007 21:35 (eighteen years ago)

Yup, there's like 10 ice cream trucks in my neighborhood, about 4 or so sell weed & coke. Now I can't hear "Turkey in the Straw" without thinking of deals going down.

This sounds really creepy...but I'm somewhat afraid of ice cream trucks (I always picture some John Wayne Gacy Jr. character going around in one abducting children...I probably saw this in a TV show, actually)

Tape Store, Monday, 14 May 2007 06:39 (eighteen years ago)

i had an ice cream truck which i sold shrooms out of
and i stored beers in th freezer
i never made much money at it
its designed to fail
i crashed it into a tree while listening to Crosstown Traffic pumped thru 2 giant Advent speakers which went sailing over my friends head thru th windshield when we went down th ravine into th tree
the cops offered to buy alot of ice cream to make me feel better
a teary eyed child looked up at me and asked if I was going to be back w more.

Yesterday my little brother told us about how he started smoking cigarettes when he was 11. He said he used to hide them by getting a pack and putting them in crayon boxes!! Fucked up!!

kv_nol, Monday, 14 May 2007 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

Wow. I never knew this happened. This is what comes of being raised in Lincolnshire.

Tell me, is there a specific method of purchasing drugs from an ice-cream van?

hobart paving, Monday, 14 May 2007 15:19 (eighteen years ago)

This thread reminded me of the donut shop where I worked. I delivered donuts every other night...it turned out the other guy who was alternating shifts was moving tons of weed to the graveyard gas station employees. I didn't really care. Once day the store owner asked if I knew. I said yes. She said, "You know, if it bothers you, I can make you head of the cane toad department."

this is the 1st time that i've ever heard of this glasgow ice cream wars. funny that, the one time i remember seeing an ice cream truck in the UK it was in glasgow (!) do they still have mr. whippy's over there? what a strange name for ice cream vendors, BTW (sounds like the PERFECT name for some creepy child-stalker selling ice cream to kids.)

Eisbaer, Monday, 14 May 2007 21:19 (eighteen years ago)

There was one in Boise called SCARY LARRY'S.

Abbott, Monday, 14 May 2007 21:28 (eighteen years ago)

abbott: the ice cream trucks in the NYC metro area also play "turkey in the straw." that must be the official national ice-cream truck anthem, or something.

Eisbaer, Monday, 14 May 2007 21:36 (eighteen years ago)

note that the makers of the movie "Local Hero" also made an excellent film about the Glasgow Ice Cream Wars called Comfort And Joy, noted in passing at the end of that wikipedia article.

on the West Coast USA, burrito joints seem to be the drug-moving cover business of choice.

sleeve, Monday, 14 May 2007 22:11 (eighteen years ago)

dud only because my friends who want to open a non-drug dealing ice cream shop in brooklyn are scared of the drug-dealing ice cream truck cartel... i don't really see how they would compete but maybe the trucks would lose walk-ups?

lfam, Monday, 14 May 2007 22:35 (eighteen years ago)

also, hey, what is the drug-moving cover business of choice for the southeast and florida? i need to know!

lfam, Monday, 14 May 2007 22:36 (eighteen years ago)

I prefer the anarchist weirdo photographer ice cream trucks

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 14 May 2007 22:47 (eighteen years ago)

youn, Monday, 14 May 2007 23:56 (eighteen years ago)

Yes they are totally dud.

Abbott, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 00:41 (eighteen years ago)

used to sell bomb pops and big sticks and strawberry shortcake bars? okay

youn, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 00:51 (eighteen years ago)

Strawberry shortcake bars are my drug. Actually I kind of got burnt out on them when I drove an ice cream truck. But they are the best of all items.

Abbott, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 00:53 (eighteen years ago)

also, no mention of raekwon the chef's "ice cream" yet. i thought that was a board full of music geeks!!

Eisbaer, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 01:48 (eighteen years ago)

haha, i think that being that little alien-kid in "the corbomite maneuver" episode of star trek kinda trumps ice cream man.

Eisbaer, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 02:25 (eighteen years ago)

he still has the same smile, 30 years later though.

Eisbaer, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 02:25 (eighteen years ago)

Why don't I have ice cream trucks bringing weed around to me? God dammit.

Trayce, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 02:37 (eighteen years ago)

e, surely.

ken c, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 10:38 (eighteen years ago)

A "family friend" of ours got caught selling drugs from his ice cream van... wonder whatever happened to him?

Tom D., Tuesday, 15 May 2007 11:37 (eighteen years ago)

It still sounds like a line from "Hello Summertime" Bobby Goldsboro.

Mark G, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 11:38 (eighteen years ago)

You mean "Summer - The First Time"?

Tom D., Tuesday, 15 May 2007 11:40 (eighteen years ago)

CREAM
get the money
dolla dolla bill y'all

Wrinklepaws, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 11:41 (eighteen years ago)

Birds and bees and all the flowers and trees, fishes on the line
ice cream trucks being used to sell drugs singing hello summertime
A homemade boat and a river to float nothing on our mind
Summer moon above two people in love singing hello summertime
