London Boroughs Poll

London Boroughs - can't kill 'em, can't eat 'em.

Thought this might give an interesting spin on the Gareth/Marcello project, seeing as it's much less specific and people may be less inclined to vote for their locale if they've been stiffed on housing benefit/council tax/refuse collection/parking fines...

Some of them are small and some of them are big.

not sure how to vote on this, as it implies more than just locale, but, as you say, competence of the borough. i suspect people will still vote locale though

696, Monday, 14 May 2007 12:35 (eighteen years ago)

This one is easy, because I do actually love Lambeth.

Let's have a worst borough, Camden would win (lose?) by a country mile. Mainly on council tax and borough incompetence without even touching locale.

Masonic Boom, Monday, 14 May 2007 12:37 (eighteen years ago)

Apologies that it's not in alphabetical order but I couldn't really be arsed.

I think I'm going to vote for where I used to live rather than where I live now.

(Worst borough = whoever finishes bottom, I suppose).

Michael Jones, Monday, 14 May 2007 12:38 (eighteen years ago)

I voted for KENSINGTON AND CHELSEA, even though I now (officially) live in Camden.

Dom Passantino, Monday, 14 May 2007 12:39 (eighteen years ago)

And Croydon isn't London. It's like saying St Albans is London.

Dom Passantino, Monday, 14 May 2007 12:39 (eighteen years ago)

I'm in Lambeth but can't stand the council so I'm going for Southwark which is only about 500 yards away.

ledge, Monday, 14 May 2007 12:44 (eighteen years ago)

croydon isnt, but doesnt it have some of norwood in it?

696, Monday, 14 May 2007 12:45 (eighteen years ago)

have had no bad or good experiences of islington council. not sure what southwark council is going to be like

696, Monday, 14 May 2007 12:46 (eighteen years ago)

I can't get that excited about one particular borough to vote for it. Postcodes were a struggle as it is. Maybe I am not fit to be a Londoner.

(Worst borough = whoever finishes bottom, I suppose).

there will be at least 15 boroughs joint bottom here I suspect.

blueski, Monday, 14 May 2007 12:47 (eighteen years ago)

It's a list of London Boroughs, Croydon is a London Borough regardless of whether or not it's in London. Ditto Sutton.

Matt DC, Monday, 14 May 2007 12:48 (eighteen years ago)

there is that too. it just has to be in greater london

696, Monday, 14 May 2007 12:49 (eighteen years ago)

out of interest do any other cities use the 'greater' prefix to refer to outer districts?

blueski, Monday, 14 May 2007 12:50 (eighteen years ago)

outside the UK i mean (and their own language equivalent for 'greater' obv.)

blueski, Monday, 14 May 2007 12:51 (eighteen years ago)

Greater Manchester?

Mark G, Monday, 14 May 2007 12:51 (eighteen years ago)

oh.

Mark G, Monday, 14 May 2007 12:51 (eighteen years ago)

City Of Westminster, obv.

Just got offed, Monday, 14 May 2007 12:52 (eighteen years ago)

St Albans is 22 miles from London and Croydon is only 9 miles. I think, if you're that close, regardless of your own separate civic identity, you gravitationally accrete into the swirling mass of Londonness. Bromley too, though that trails bucketloads of dust out into deep space.

Michael Jones, Monday, 14 May 2007 12:52 (eighteen years ago)

st albans feels more rural/provincial.

i can't believe i'm getting sucked into this bullshit argh

That one guy that quit, Monday, 14 May 2007 12:53 (eighteen years ago)

Croydon does include Upper Norwood - we are in Croydon borough, albeit about 100 yards from the boundry with Lambeth.

I would have been tempted to put Waltham Forest, as there are some really nice areas there, and I like their local museums, but as they're trying to pull a huge chunk of funding from the museums which is threatening the William Morris museum they ain't getting my vote.

Vicky, Monday, 14 May 2007 12:53 (eighteen years ago)

That'll show 'em!

ledge, Monday, 14 May 2007 12:55 (eighteen years ago)

Well hopefully
this will

Vicky, Monday, 14 May 2007 12:58 (eighteen years ago)

Look it doesn't matter whether or not they are technically London, there could be a London Borough of Mars and it would still be eligable for the poll.

(I would actually vote for the London Borough of Mars)

Matt DC, Monday, 14 May 2007 13:08 (eighteen years ago)

that actually has IG4 in it

696, Monday, 14 May 2007 13:09 (eighteen years ago)

I want to move to the London Borough of Mars, that sounds great.

Masonic Boom, Monday, 14 May 2007 13:11 (eighteen years ago)

Vicky - that sounds pretty regrettable (and regrettably typical). I have signed the petition - and added the museum to my nebulous list of Things I Must Get Around to Doing in London When at a Loose End.

ledge, Monday, 14 May 2007 13:30 (eighteen years ago)

London Borough of Mars is Slough, obv.

PJ Miller, Monday, 14 May 2007 13:46 (eighteen years ago)

No, the London Borough of Mars is that bit of Ely Place which is really in Cambridgeshire.

Masonic Boom, Monday, 14 May 2007 13:47 (eighteen years ago)

I have voted for City of London in honour of my homies Dick Whittington and Puss in Boots.

PJ Miller, Monday, 14 May 2007 13:48 (eighteen years ago)

There really ought to have been a London Borough of Borough. Makes it stand out more than boring old Southwark.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 14 May 2007 13:54 (eighteen years ago)

otm

Michael Philip Philip Philip philip Annoyman, Monday, 14 May 2007 13:56 (eighteen years ago)

PS: What project?

PJ Miller, Monday, 14 May 2007 14:24 (eighteen years ago)

Voted for Croydon - the only one I really know, and I'd imagine all the other boroughs' branches of WH Smiths are about as depressing.

(having lived more or less all my life in SW16 but still considering that to be part of Croydon, largely due to the quite-large "CROYDON" sign outside the dry-cleaners on Crown Point, I'd say that yes, it technically is part of London)

(you may have settled this several posts upthread, but it's not often that Croydon crops up here in a non-tram related context, so I feel well within my rights to milk it)

(so there)

William Bloody Swygart, Monday, 14 May 2007 23:03 (eighteen years ago)

There is no project, PJM. I was struggling for the right word. Frippery, perhaps. In one take, like "Heroes".

Crown Point is the very northwestern corner of SE19; the Lambeth/Croydon boundary continues west for a few hundred yards down Crown Lane before spying Streatham Common rearing up in the distance and quite sensibly dipping away to the south. There's a fair chunk of SW16 in the Borough of Croydon - Pollards Hill, Norbury. Not Lonesome though, which is a shame.

Michael Jones, Monday, 14 May 2007 23:35 (eighteen years ago)

Good things about Croydon:
1. Beano's record shop.
2. The other used record shop round the back of the Drummond except you have to pass all the winos to get there.
3. Has the only known branch of my building society which is actually open on a Saturday morning.
4. erm...

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 07:26 (eighteen years ago)

Once you get past the Surrey Street market it reminds me quite a lot of mid-'70s Glasgow.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 07:28 (eighteen years ago)

is croydon the enfield of the south? (i think ive only ever been through either)

696, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 08:22 (eighteen years ago)

Isn't Beano's dead? Lloyds Park is great also.

Even at its worst, Croydon is better than Sutton, which is the Romford of the south. Although Sutton does have Cheam, which means Hancock.

Pete W, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 08:30 (eighteen years ago)

Beano's got a last minute reprieve. It's all on the ground floor now but it's still going.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 08:33 (eighteen years ago)

Oh good. Always felt a bit guilty cos we knew people who worked there who would sell us stuff at a massive discount. Sorry Mr Beano.

Pete W, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 08:37 (eighteen years ago)

Worst poll ever!

Well done, Islington.

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 12:24 (eighteen years ago)

What happened to my Southwark vote? It's a fix.

ledge, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 12:29 (eighteen years ago)

true to Southwark form, it was half-inched by a hard up rapscallion
