I am thinking button-up vests here and not sweater vests, tho the latter can be discussed.

Anyone think they're really for real gonna be in style again soon?

― Abbott, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 21:54 (nineteen years ago)

i have several button-up vests but never seem to figure out exactly how to wear them more than occasionally. it's kind of difficult to put together properly with a whole outfit, i think (especially if yr a girl--i find vests either are too boxy at the waist or too small at the chest so it can be hard to really balance)

I wear them when the weather and the occasion warrant them. I doubt they're going to be in style any time soon but I couldn't care less.

I generally do not like them, although a good three piece suit can look quite nice. I doubt they'll fully come back in fashion, because they're one of those things that's always threatening to come back in fashion and never quite does.

oh this is funny b/c i was just talking with my friend/hairdresser the other day about vests coming back into style!! they remind me of grade 9! i might wear one with a tank top, but it has to be the right vest.
lol i need to go find some lisa bonet jpegs now

maybe they remind me more of grade 8, thinking abt it

They're kind of the thing you'd try once in eighth grade because "Some things that are different are cool, and vests are different, therefore, if I wear a vest I'll be cool!" Wrong.

― Hurting 2, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 02:48 (nineteen years ago)

srsly though, they were IN in 1988!
and they had a brief, more rockish ressurgence in, like, 1994/5? i think
or maybe that was just me

― rrrobyn, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 02:52 (nineteen years ago)

btw last week i was looking through storage box of clothes for highschool things and i found my nirvana tshirt and i found my multi-coloured scarf top and i found my navy blue unitard and my 70s suede shirt/jacket thing but i did not find my brown corduroy vest :(

― rrrobyn, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 02:57 (nineteen years ago)

I used to wear vests with white puffy pirate shirts as a goth thing. I havent worn one in years!

― Trayce, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 02:59 (nineteen years ago)

I have a brown argyle sweater vest thing for work

):

― Drooone, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 03:02 (nineteen years ago)

oh yeah! vests and goths!
xpost
i think i just wore mine with big tshirts. or blouses that only 13/14 yr old girls in 1988/89 could wear. i srsly had a blouse-like shirt with musical notes and stuff on a panel that covered the buttons. i remember this b/c i'm wearing it AND a vest in that school photo. which i do not have here but which i wld probably post if i did. as a bonus, the school photos month managed to correspond with my short-lived blue eyeliner phase.

Maybe vests do some kind of 10-year fashionable cycle - they were big around 1975 (midwest, so 1974 in the rest of the country)

― Jaq, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 03:08 (nineteen years ago)

there are so many different kinds of vests!!

― rrrobyn, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 03:10 (nineteen years ago)

i have realized

― rrrobyn, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 03:10 (nineteen years ago)

There are! From the long kind, like lab coats with the sleeves cut off, to little tailored weskits with watchpockets.

'dreamy, exhilarating, magical Vests'

Those vests are so unflattering on otherwise attractive women.

― Hurting 2, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 03:31 (nineteen years ago)

i have a black vest. i got told i looked "adorable" wearing it earlier in the week, not quite sure how to take that.

― haitch, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 04:19 (nineteen years ago)

I always kind of wished I could pull of the vest/bra only combo like Patti Smith but I'm never even going to try. It would be the height of all folly.

I've been into the really tall/skinny/buttony vests of House's Dr. Cameron:

Maybe not with so much boobage, tho:

What's even a good way to wear a vest besides w/an oxford or other button-up shirt?

― Abbott, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 04:30 (nineteen years ago)

Like this I do not like so much, I would feel like I was wearing a brown paperbag over my pretty shirt for no reason:

It works best (for women, but also for guys heh) when you are flat chested.

Or not...

Gah! I just puked a little in my mouth.

― nathalie, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 09:22 (nineteen years ago)

(fecking Atlantic divide, I was going to say dud then I realised you meant waistcoats)

I too occasionally favoured a 'vest' with stupidly huge goth shirt at one time. I still think they can look good on the right person, but that person isn't me.

― onimo, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 09:36 (nineteen years ago)

it's me!

― g-kit, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 10:42 (nineteen years ago)

ok, it's not.

― g-kit, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 10:42 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

Saw a pretty cool vest for men tonight. But it was 98 DOLLARS!

― Gukbe, Wednesday, 17 September 2008 00:11 (eighteen years ago)

"cool vest for men "

contradiction

― Zeno, Wednesday, 17 September 2008 00:16 (eighteen years ago)

Wearing a vest sends the fashion statement: look at my vest.

― Aimless, Wednesday, 17 September 2008 00:27 (eighteen years ago)

bahahaha

― Abbott loves her turtle (Abbott), Wednesday, 17 September 2008 00:32 (eighteen years ago)

vests look good with a nice coat and tie! I just don't understand why the vest is more expensive than the matching trousers.
