Also, where are they now?

I wuvved em, tho I guess their shtick kind of required Actually Existing Stalinism still to to be a sinister and potentially revenant threat, at least to work at peak flow. J.Hoberman wrote great stuff on them — and lots else — in The Red Atlantis, which I hugely recommend to all...

Are they the folks who commissioned a survey of what people actually want in a painting - eg. nothing too abstract, nice colours, etc. - and then produced said painting? Or was that somebody else?

The very same. They also did the same thing with pop songs, then had Dave Soldier write them, with VERY funny results.

I believe the last time I saw them they were introducing an exhibition of art done by elephants in Thailand who had been trained to use paintbrushes.

I actually bought the Komar and Melamid CD with the world's most and least wanted pop songs on it. I actually haven't listened to it, perhaps terrified that the A side would sound like Britney and the B side like me.

Momus, you will love it. A-side is a slow jam that mentions Wittgenstein. B-side involves operatic country-western singing, a children's choir doing holiday-themed Wal-Mart jingles, hip-hop featuring tubas and accordions, etc., and includes the lyric "Out on the range just me and my mind/Took me a break to read some Wittgenstein."

Weird, I *just* listened to this, on a friend's recommendation. Was it linked from somewhere?

You can tell the survey was taken in 1996, Mariah Carey/Michael Bolton rock infused Stevie B styled love-theme? ... I'm so happy I recorded over all my parents' HORRIBLE cassettes over the course of the 1990s.

The most popular these days would probably incorporate some of the elements from the most unpopular, namely the hip hop and synthesiser element... they should update it!

The paintings still make me laugh:
