Pugs in wedding clothes wait for their turn to walk down the aisle during an attempt to break the Guinness record for the largest mass dog "wedding", in Littleton, Colorado May 19, 2007. kingfish, Friday, 1 June 2007 18:41 (eighteen years ago)

there was a pug wedding in littleton and i wasnt invited?

homosexual II, Friday, 1 June 2007 18:52 (eighteen years ago)

you are hands-down the biggest fan of animals in clothing on ilx.

I love dogs but I prefer my animals with snarky captions.

Ms Misery, Friday, 1 June 2007 18:54 (eighteen years ago)

Still, "mass dog wedding" is funny.

kingfish, Friday, 1 June 2007 18:59 (eighteen years ago)

I wish people would ease up on the pug-loving: aren't they kinda sickly little malformed freaks of inbreeding? There is nothing cute about horrible breathing problems and eyes that pop out of socket. I found King Charles cavalier spaniels a lot more adorable before I found out a good chunk of them have skulls too small for their brains, leading to miserable brain-squeezing torture that ends with their having to be put down.

(P.S. As a kid I always wound up playing soccer against the Littleton Bombers, which led to this situation later where everytime I heard "Columbine shooters" I imagined that as being another club soccer team -- I wonder if they've changed their name.)

!!!!!

Ms Misery, Friday, 1 June 2007 19:11 (eighteen years ago)

Ha, yes, the Littleton Bombers have in fact been superceded by Littleton United.

Syringomyelia (SM) is a condition affecting the brain and spine, causing symptoms ranging from mild discomfort to severe pain and partial paralysis. It is caused by a malformation in the lower back of the skull which reduces the space available to the brain, compressing it and often forcing it out (herniating it) through the opening into the spinal cord. This blocks the flow of cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) around the brain and spine and increases the fluid's pressure, creating turbulence which in turn is believed to create fluid pockets, or syrinxes (hence the term syringomyelia), in the spinal cord. Syringomyelia is rare in most breeds but has become widespread in the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, with international research samples in the past few years consistently showing nearly all (90%+) cavaliers have the malformation and that between 30-70% have syrinxes, though most dogs with syrinxes are not symptomatic.

nabisco, Friday, 1 June 2007 19:14 (eighteen years ago)

This is why I don't like people who buy purebreeds.

Ms Misery, Friday, 1 June 2007 19:15 (eighteen years ago)

I.e., they have fucked up these adorable dogs so their BRANES are squeezing out their SPINES, and good luck breeding it out through a handful of healthy ones without just creating some new inbreeding nightmare.

nabisco, Friday, 1 June 2007 19:17 (eighteen years ago)

HEEEEEY reason number 2349068028926950 to do your homework before you buy, or otherwise acquire, a dog!! XP

Laurel, Friday, 1 June 2007 19:18 (eighteen years ago)

xpost I don't think it's so much down to buyers, who mostly just want a reliable, predictable dog -- more that breeders are still focusing on useless, arcane, archaic breed standards, rather than anyone stepping in with a focus on breeding healthy, friendly, cooperative dogs whose withers might be two centimeters away from where someone decided they should be. Like, I get the feeling most people buying from breeders would prefer that, really -- it's gotta be a small contingent that's actually concerned with show-worthiness and breed standards.

nabisco, Friday, 1 June 2007 19:21 (eighteen years ago)

I am getting all Debbie Downer dogs-with-brain-malfunctions on Kingfish's cheer-up thread, aren't I.

nabisco, Friday, 1 June 2007 19:24 (eighteen years ago)

I like pugs, but will probably get a basset or a pitty, due to incrementally less health problems.

Also, bassets is funny.

kingfish, Friday, 1 June 2007 19:55 (eighteen years ago)

seriously basset pitbull cross, that thing was precious

TOMBOT, Friday, 1 June 2007 19:58 (eighteen years ago)

haha, good going nabisco.

Obv. breeders are largely at fault too but supply/demand you know?

Shelters, rescue groups always always. . .

Ms Misery, Friday, 1 June 2007 20:00 (eighteen years ago)

Nabisco, where did you get that text from? I'd be interested in showing it to some of the KCR rescue people I know.

accentmonkey, Friday, 1 June 2007 20:13 (eighteen years ago)

The basset pitbull cross was kinda odd, tho. When i see a dog that low, i expect big long flopears, and pitty heads are built quite differently.

kingfish, Friday, 1 June 2007 20:17 (eighteen years ago)

Just grabbed from Wikipedia. I don't think it had any numbers on how many dogs were symptomatic, but it's just strange to think that 90+% of them are affected, and you may potentially notice your dog scratching at its head one day and then learn that it could very well be experiencing constant brain pain.

nabisco, Friday, 1 June 2007 20:19 (eighteen years ago)

Shelters, rescue groups always always. . .

Yup. Always.

Michael White, Friday, 1 June 2007 20:23 (eighteen years ago)

Our family did buy a pure-bred basset hound once, w/ intentions to breed her. The amount we got for the puppies more or less paid for replacing the family room carpet(w/ the plastic swimming pool of puppies was kept).
