So Then...Does Anyone in London Need a Nanny?

Hi! I'm Lena. I'm engaged to Marcello Carlin (perhaps you've heard of him...) and currently I am in Toronto happily working as a nanny. I'd like to get a work permit visa so I could continue to work as a nanny in London - not to mention finally move in with MC and get married! All I need is someone willing to jump through the modest hoops required by the government (basically advertise for someone like me, prove that I can't be found and therefore I have to come over), then i get the visa, move and begin to work. This visa is by far more preferable to the alternative visas, which are way more expensive and time-consuming, overall.

So...if anyone knows someone who is looking for a nanny (live-out) in SW/NW/Central London, could you please let me know (or ask around?) I have experience, first aid/CPR, references, am bilingual, and of course love music and books. Thanks!

We're all fans of you both here, but unfortunately I'm not in London (or a father), myself. Best of luck though!

Good luck! Make Marcello screw his contacts for all they're worth - it'll be tough but I'm sure perseverance will pay off.

Wow, hello Lena!

Hello Tom D!

Maybe I should post on the parenting thread too? Marcello has asked around, and those people have asked around but nothing's come up yet :-(

Good idea re: parenting thread, by the way. Not everyone on there reads the other threads, I think.

what is wrong with fiancee visa?

koogs, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 11:37 (eighteen years ago)

(I don't think the London ILXors I know with babies can afford a nanny, to be honest. As much as we'd like to help...)

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 11:45 (eighteen years ago)

Koogs, one may not be allowed to work with that visa straight away.

suzy, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 14:08 (eighteen years ago)

Nope, you have to apply to the Home Office to be able to work, and then only after you get married.

On the fiancee visa, you aren't allowed to work for six months, so you have to get married pronto. Not good!

I will post at the parenting thread, thanks!

Much as we'd love to have a nanny once our little one's born, the only reason I'm going back to work is because we need the salary to pay the mortgage, and the only way we can afford the childcare is because I've got a heavily subsidised creche at work... It'd be nice though!

One could always place an advert in 'The Lady'

Ed, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 19:59 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I should do that, but I wanted to ask around here first, since y'all know about us...

Also, 'The Lady' costs a lot to advertise in, unfortunately.

Hey - I can't help you directly but I have a couple of friends who were in yours and Marcello's position a couple of years ago and she found quite a bit of work as a nanny when she got here. I can ask for any additional advice if you want.

Lena, you may have come across this site already, but here's a big long list of various agencies and sites where parents looking for nannies advertise, etc.

Congratulations and best of luck!

Jaq, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 15:53 (eighteen years ago)

Thanks for the advice, but I will need a work permit before any agency can hire me - that is a great list though, thanks Jaq!

Matt DC - was she able to find an agency that could help her with her permit, or did she come over another way? Thanks!

Just bumping this to say I have my visa and will be in London soon, so I'm now looking in earnest!

Be sure to learn all the words to "A Spoonful of Sugar" before you go. Good luck.

Thanks, I will!

I'm sure there are zillions of websites where you can look for clients but Mumsnet is a site used by many discerning UK parents, there is a section for nannies etc here.

Thanks!
