Because the Nazis liked polls. Or killing Poles. Anyway, Hitler isn't in this poll because he has the unfair advantage of being like Charlie Chaplin but funny.

Frogman Henry, Monday, 4 June 2007 09:05 (eighteen years ago)

Mengele was overrated, son.

ftw

StanM, Monday, 4 June 2007 10:20 (eighteen years ago)

I voted for Goering, because he was a style guru.

who wants to be the first to complain about how this thread is trivialising the memory of the Nazis' victims?

The Real Dirty Vicar, Monday, 4 June 2007 10:29 (eighteen years ago)

Can't see Chicken Boy Himmler picking up too many votes

Tom D., Monday, 4 June 2007 10:35 (eighteen years ago)

who wants to be the first to complain about how this thread is trivialising the memory of the Nazis' victims?

That would be almost as predictable as this very thread.

King Boy Pato, Monday, 4 June 2007 11:01 (eighteen years ago)

I feel like Rommel would win in a landslide if he'd been included. I vote Hess, because I prefer Nazi schemes when they're wacky and pointless instead of evil and effective.

clotpoll, Monday, 4 June 2007 11:54 (eighteen years ago)

Marcello Carlin is the only one on the list I can talk to about Glen Michael and Glen Daly, so he wins

Tom D., Monday, 4 June 2007 11:56 (eighteen years ago)

NO ROMMEL NO CREDIBILITY

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Monday, 4 June 2007 19:06 (eighteen years ago)

wtf @ no rommel. i boycott.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Monday, 4 June 2007 19:12 (eighteen years ago)

Rommel is a fairly minor Nazi on the cosmic scheme of things. I presume the threadstarter's idea is to focus attention on those who were major architects of the Nazi programme.

I wonder should Rosenberg and/or Bormann be in the list?

The Real Dirty Vicar, Monday, 4 June 2007 19:14 (eighteen years ago)

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Monday, 4 June 2007 19:19 (eighteen years ago)

One thing that is interesting about the Nazis is what a bunch of weirdos they were. I mean this aside from their loathsome policies obviously, and am talking about their individual natures and interpersonal politics. I can't really think of a clique of oddballs as strange ever finding themselves in charge of a country. You could not really imagine a search/destroy thread on Stalin's cronies, say, as they are all fairly anonymous.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Monday, 4 June 2007 19:56 (eighteen years ago)

Heydrich has an amusing recurring role in Philip Kerr's German noirs, so if I could stomach voting in this one I'd vote for him.

I remember hearing the news of Hess's death on the radio, when i was on a summer holiday in Sussex aged about 10 or so. I was amazed that any of the Nazi leadership were still alive in the late 80s.

Forest Pines, Monday, 4 June 2007 20:24 (eighteen years ago)

Super Cub, Monday, 4 June 2007 20:37 (eighteen years ago)

That would just turn into a Carlos v. Andrea Baader fite.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Monday, 4 June 2007 21:14 (eighteen years ago)

Er, I mean Andreas Baader. Duh.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Monday, 4 June 2007 21:14 (eighteen years ago)

that's what makes all the events that led this crazy fringe party's (which the Nazis were looked upon as even then) rise to power so amazing/terrifying.

You could not really imagine a search/destroy thread on Stalin's cronies, say, as they are all fairly anonymous.

oh Stalin's cronies were plenty colorful, but most of the details were obscured and buried and denied for several decades, which has impeded their notoriety somewhat. Though I don't think any of them approached the heights of eccentricity found in the Nazi inner circle, its true.

This is, of course, the cue to quote those famous lyrics to Colonel Bogie's March:

Hitler has only got one ball.
Goering, he has two, but small.
Himmler has something similar,
And Goebbels has no balls at all.

Trayce, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 00:49 (eighteen years ago)

Rommel was a boring, respectable army man and not a wacky genodical post-punk fashionplate - which is why he didn't get on the list.

I only had room for one joke entry and last time I did Geir/Nazis, I got in so much fucking trouble for it...

Short story waiting to happen: Michael Negele worked as a gardener at our house for awhile. I take (some) comfort in the fact that he had to pull weeds from a jew's lawn for a few years.

accentmonkey, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 16:00 (eighteen years ago)

"pulling weeds from a jew's lawn". I can't get this line out of my head. It's on repeat to the tune of "I've Been Working on the Railroad".

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 17:33 (eighteen years ago)

Hitler Has Only Got One Ball

The one I know is:

Hitler has only got one ball.
The other is in the Albert Hall.
His arsehole's wrapped in a parcel.

... but I don't know the last line

blondi--the only nazi who could genuinely claim they were "only following orders"?

I remember reading that Manstein had a dachshund that he trained to give the Hitler salute. I think that dog must have been a better Nazi than Blondi.
