If you squint, it's quite clearly a stylised cartoon of Paula Radcliffe squatting to piss in the street.

I'm warming to it more and more. Esp. good that there will be colour variants.
― blueski, Monday, 4 June 2007 13:37 (eighteen years ago)
On first look, it looks like the worst fucking logo ever.
Maybe it'll grow on me.
― King Boy Pato, Monday, 4 June 2007 13:43 (eighteen years ago)
The BBC are frantically trying to remove all the "Lisa Simpson giving head" posts - but it's too late. Once you picture it you just can't get it out of your mind.
― King Boy Pato, Monday, 4 June 2007 13:47 (eighteen years ago)
It does look a bit like a shotputter assuming the position.
But more like a broken pink swastika.
― Pete W, Monday, 4 June 2007 13:49 (eighteen years ago)
I find it annoying that the 2s aren't the same. As anyone who ever spent a boring O-level Geography class trying to design a logo for the 1992 Manchester Olympics (hey, it coulda happened) and found drawing two identical 9s freehand pretty tricky, this is tantamount to a slap in the face.
― Michael Jones, Monday, 4 June 2007 13:50 (eighteen years ago)
Currently 83% of people are voting it a "wooden spoon" in the BBC poll. I don't think it looks anything like a wooden spoon.
― Michael Jones, Monday, 4 June 2007 13:53 (eighteen years ago)
I've only just realised it spells 2012. I feel very silly, but I honestly thought they were just a bunch of random 'dynamic' shapes.
― Daniel Giraffe, Monday, 4 June 2007 13:54 (eighteen years ago)
Ha, I've only just realised that the four random blocks are meant to be numbers. Makes slightly more sense now.

Now I think of it, that is def. not the worst Olympic logo ever. Examples include Sydney 2000 (let's get as many Australian cliches in as possible in a logo) and Atlanta 1996 (faux-Olympic corporate symbol crap).
But it's no Barcelona 1992!

key thing people are forgetting here is that the one of the highlights of the 2012 games will be the doctor lighting the olympic flame so a playful space spirit thing will stop turning children into drawings. this logo i feel reflects this.

right, i has a car again, even though its bumper is now held together with what might as well be a piece of string. where were we?
why is it [ie its representation of the date] 'really really bad'?
because people are completely failing to realise what it's doing. if you've got a logo that's meant to say "2012" and a lot of people (okay, this is based on a not-very-scientific sample of knobs moaning on message boards and, er, me -- which'd be an interesting venn diagram) aren't actually seeing it, that strikes me as a failure.
from a purely personal point of view: i'd never have seen "2012" in there unless someone had pointed it out. and i'm still not sure what the hyphen (or whatever it is) is about.
i'm not saying i could do better. i'm not saying my eight-year-old godson could do better. i'm simply saying that i think it's ugly, garish and so difficult to decode that it might as well be abstract. furthermore: the typeface for the "london" bit is ugly as sin, and might as well be comic sans.
ultimately, aesthetics is in the eye of the beholder. and this beholder thinks this sucks. (perhaps literally, as louis points out, although i think "paula radcliffe taking a shit" is nearer the mark.)
it's certainly not good to set aesthetics and practicality up as enemies of each other
no, i agree; however, in this instance "practicality" isn't being used to mean "is this an appealing logo which represents the event in question" (to which i'd argue the answer is "no", natch) but "will it print well?" which is, of course, a consideration -- i mean, i've had many arguments with the picture desk in which i have to point out that it might be a beautifully composed photograph but that red background is gonna look SHIT once it's come out the other end of our presses -- but isn't something i was thinking about at all when my jaw was on the floor looking at this thing.
in what universe is that a problem??!?
joking aside: that meme is all over the place already (a quick and unscientific google of "olympic logo lisa blowjob" yields predictable results) and it's gonna stick. of course the artists wouldn't have considered that ... but if you're going to come up with a (semi-)abstract design, you have to think very carefully about what other people are going to see in it, and be prepared for wacky japesters to go "LOL IT LOOKS LIKE A COCK OR SOME TITS OR A BIG SHIT" (hello b3ta; in fairness, i find all that very amusing, but then i also subscribe to viz, so hey).
i guess the haters are actually into all that faux-primitive coffee shop brushtroke crap
eh? why would you think that? not at all: the beijing one is particularly atrocious. (still, chicago, while taking "uninspired" to new depths, at least has a reasonably appealing typeface.) but "hey, it's not as bad as these" != "this is good".
Interesting how simplicity is used both as a criticism (my child could have done it) and as praise (good design = simple design)
oh, absolutely ... although i don't think the london logo is remotely simple. it's fussy, garish and over-designed.
― grimly fiendish, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 15:07 (eighteen years ago)
There's no mention of which Olympiad this is, either. I can't even remember. I guess big f-off Roman numerals is a bit Superbowl, though.
I like the logo. It's both slapdash and geometrically precise. Jaunty with an undercurrent of violence.
(Many x-posts)
― Michael Jones, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 15:17 (eighteen years ago)
it's not so much 'will it print well' as 'will it display well' (on screen, on page, as an actual physical object thinking exhibitons etc.) and i think the answer to that is a definite yes and it will display better in these ways than previous Olympics logos because of it's bulk and the way everything is joined together.
― blueski, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 15:22 (eighteen years ago)
you have to think very carefully about what other people are going to see in it, and be prepared for wacky japesters to go "LOL IT LOOKS LIKE A COCK OR SOME TITS OR A BIG SHIT"

LONDON - An animated display of London’s jigsaw-style 2012 Olympics logo, which has drawn an unfavorable public response, was removed from an official Web site Tuesday following concern it could trigger epileptic seizures.
Epilepsy Action, a British health charity, said 10 people had complained about the animation and some had suffered seizures from watching images depicting a diver plunging into a pool.

Here's the video which they removed from the site:
