Nick sent me this photo he took today. Its the most heartbreaking thing I think I have ever seen. He found it lying in the road.

This Valentine's Day ... I live in an apartment complex, on the second floor, right next to the stairwell going to the third floor ... about 6:00 PM Valentine's Day night a beautiful bouquet appeared on the stairwell landing. Just sitting there.
It was still there the next day, and the flowers needed water, so I went up to snoop - behind the bouquet was a little card with "I'm sorry" written on it, torn in half.
So I took the bouquet and brought it into my home, re-trimmed the stems, and put the flowers into a lovely vase.
I left the torn card in the stairwell.

A few weeks ago I was driving and a young gull was walking in my lane, oblivious to the traffic going by. I stopped for it, for quite a while, and waited until it stepped up onto a median. It kept on walking and stepped down into traffic, and was immediately run over by an oblivious motorist. I was still more or less at a standstill, so I saw it die. I yelled reflexively as I saw what was about to happen, but of course that had no effect. This happened on a road I drive on frequently, and for a long time afterward I could see the remains of the gull as I drove by.
That's probably not the saddest thing I've ever seen, but it's the saddest thing I've seen recently.
